The Lowden name is spelled "Lothian" in the scotish language. This information is important during the research of genealogy, but is not apparently common knowledge. Lowden (Lothian) is a stronger name when you research the areas of Edinburgh to Glascow. Good luck to all who read this post.

Hello,

I've seen some of the names you've mentioned but I don't believe they are connected to mine. At least I haven't found one as of this date.

I have just learned that The Prindle Genealogy by Franklin Cogswell Prindle is free on google, and can be downloaded as a pdf or searched right there online. This is what I have heard is the definitive early Prindle and associated lines "bible."

So, google "The Prindle Genealogy by Franklin Cogswell Prindle" (like that, in quotes) and the volume will pop up right there on your screen. Maybe you will be able to connect your dots! It's a real treasure trove.

Jim: My direct email is sjsgt49@aol.com. Regarding the Lowden Name, my middle, check out this link for additional source. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lothian

I am extremely interested in the location of the Lowden name. My research has found a strong link to the "lowlands" of Scotland" and may include North England in the "Borders" Area.

An interesting fact, history says that the Lowlands were settled by the Irish @ 600 to 900 A.D.

My family links through Ayr/Lothian back to Northern Ireland in @ 1732. In fact the Windmill at BallyHolme (Bangor) N.I, was built by one of my Great Grandfathers who was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1702. Renfrewshire is at the northern tip of Ayr, and at one time was part of the whole area.

Also, William Wallace, is from the same region. He fought the English in one of his first battles at "Loudoun Hill."

Check "wikipedia" for that name....Bob

Hi!

I've heard of the Lothian connection also, but have never seen a documented reference. I'd really like to find one. I think the James de Lambinus story discounts the Lothian connection as the original source of the name.

The reference I cited previously (Craufuird Loudoun's book, _A History of the House of Loudoun_) takes as its reference _The First Statistical Account of Scotland_, page 103, published in the 1790s:

"Number X.

PARISH OF LOUDOUN

(County of Ayr.)

By the Rev. Dr. George Lawrie

Name, Extent, &c.

The parish of Loudoun is situated in that part of the shire of Ayr called Cunningham, a Danish word signifying a royal feast. Its name Loudoun is, probably, derived from a hill in the extremity of the parish, called Loudon, from the old word low, or fire, and don, a hill."

Link to page image: http://stat-acc-scot.edina.ac.uk/sas/images/pages/750wide/1s...

I ran into one guy a while back who simply refused to acknowledge there might be a possible alternative origin. Also, I believe I mentioned the William Wallace story in a previous message in this thread :-)

jim
I just read your post regarding the origins of the name Lowden/Loudoun. During my research and travels to Scotland I find this fact of interest. In the scottish language, the name "Lowden/Loudoun" is the word "Lothian". The area of Edinburgh, Scotland is rich with this spelling of the name. In fact the local buroughs are now known as West/Middle/East Lothian. These were split from a larger area once known as "Lothian." The buses still use the name Lothian as there identifiers. Also, google "Lowden Hill" for some very interesting history regarding William Wallace.
My family, Lowden is recorded in Renfrewshire, Scotland. My relative built the Windmill located in BallyHolme, County Down, N.I. in 1732. His name was; Arthur Lowden.

Hi.

I can't help you with Edna Lowden's descendants but what do you know about her ancestry? How far back does her Lowden line go in Greenwich? I am trying to locate Rebecca Lowden, who married Matthew Dayton circa 1780. Rebecca is said to have be born in Greenwich and died in Armonk, N.Y., which is in Westchester County just across the N.Y. line from Greenwich. Prindle is also a common name in that area of Conn.-N.Y. I have in my Dayton tree a Gilbert Sullivan Dayton married to Emily Lovisa Prindle in 1876. Emily was born 9 Feb. 1857 and died 25 Jan. 1917.

Hi Lis

You've obviously done a lot of research into the Lowden family and wonder if you can help me, a beginner!

My Gt grandmother was Mary A Lowden born abt 1875 in Burnley Lancashire, I've been unable to trace her birth but traced her brother's christening. He is William Henry Lowden born Burnley Oct 1882 parents, Thomas and Susannah Lowden.

I have checked 1881 census which states Thomas born Plymton abt 1837/8 and Susannah, Tavistock abt 1839/40. There's also a William Lowden, boarder, born plymton abt 1861.

All other checks re census records appear to relate to the Thomas and Susannah in your tree.

Did you come across my Thomas and Susannah while doing research? Are they connected to the brothers you mention?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks
Rachel

I'm am looking for any information on George Lowden that was born March 9, 1903. He was adopted out of Callander, Ontario, Canada at the age of five and changed his last name to Camp. He had a sister in the orphanage also that was about two years old. It is believed he was born in England or his family came from England. Any information will help. I thought that since the were not put up for adoption until they were older, maybe the parents passed on.

Is quest from Robin? I found this in some info Roll had sent me in 02. How have you been? Is Frank well?
o:	Donochar
Date:	4/27/02 5:40:52 PM Eastern Daylight Time
From:	(William Henry Roll)

Dear Charlotte,

it has
led me today to the discovery of the parents of Fannie L. (1821-1906), the
second wife of John H. Kidd (1813-1875). Fannie is Fannie L. Kinnan, born
Aug 1821 in Romulus, Seneca, NY. She was the daughter of Lewis Kinnan. born
about 1788 in Virginia. Lewis married Jennie Morgan. Lewis' parents were
Joseph Kinnan (1755-1791) and Mary Lewis (1763-1848). Mary had spent many
years in Indian captivity, but was later rescued by her brother Jacob Lewis
in the Mid-West. Mary Lewis was the daughter of Zephaniah Lewis (1736-1777)
and Ann Doty, possibly a descendant of Edward Doty the Mayflower immigrant.
It's all in Volume 6 of the Somerset County Historical Quarterly.

Hi there, it was nice to hear from you however I don't think this is the same family. My earliest record is for Joseph Lowden who came from Ireland and settled in Cumberland, England. I have not found any record of the family going to Canada.
Sorry, keep looking :)
Madeline

I have no idea myself where the Lowdens originaly came from. I was just going by what I was told. I have tried to find info but without names it is very hard and I gave up yrs ago. I did look on the Ellis Island site for passengers, found some but no idea if they are related. I was told my grandparents were on one of the ships but since I do not have their names, who knows? I do know that my cousin was in the service in Scotland and he visited the Louden castle. That was why I sent for the book about the Loudens in Scotland. My sister actually met the guy that put it together but she did not know who he was at the time.

Hi, I found my Great Great Grandparents Margaret GRAY and William GRAY on the 1861 Census at Manchester. I obtained their daughter Mary's Marriage Certificate which showed that Margaret started out as Margaret LOWDEN. I am unable to find any record of Margaret and William's marriage and I assume this is because it took place in Ireland.

Margaret shows on the census as from Ireland, though William is from Manchester. I found ONE Margaret LOUDEN in Ireland born in Antrim in 1814.

I wondered if anyone else has come across Margaret LOWDEN or LOUDEN?
Regards, Jim

Hi
Thomas Glanville Lowden's bible only contains his and Susannah's birthdays and their children's. However I dont know if you have traced their daughter Elizabeth Ann Lowden's marriage? She married Jan-Mar 1882 Plymouth Reg Dist, Thomas Joseph Glanville of Buckland Monachorum born Ap-Jun 1854 Tavistock Reg Dist & died December 13th 1941 Sheepstor(buried at Sheepstor...his and Elizabeth's grave has a headstone which can clearly be seen in the churchyard).

I haven't as yet managed to link Thomas Joseph Glanville into the main Glanville Family Tree.......but I have traced the GLANVILLE tree back from our Harriet Glanville (who was bap 23rd Nov 1806 in Meavy & died October 21st 1875 Meavy)to the 1500's.

Elisabeth

PS I am the great great great grand daughter of Harriet (nee Glanville) and Edmund Pepperell Lowden.
Hello Keith
I have just seen your reply to my posting...ref Edmund Louden/Lowden married to Harriet Glanville Meavy. You referred to your Roots Web details and listing of the children of Edmund and harriet...so I went and had a look...Oooops sorry you have an error! I am descended from Edmund Pepperell Lowden and Harriet Glanville. You have Edmund Glanville Lowden entered as the youngest son of their son Thomas Glanville Lowden and Susannah! Sorry he was the BASE son of Priscilla Lowden, Thomas Glanville Lowden's sister and youngest daugher of Edmund and Harriet. She later married a William Sluman and went on to have other children. Thomas Glanville Lowden is my great great grandad he was married to Susannah Caser. I have his bible at home and (in his handwritiung in the front)is listed all the children and their birthdates!

Referring back to Edmund Glanville Lowden's birth I have a copy of his birth certificate here at home and it clearly states he is the son of Priscilla Lowden no father ...he was born 11th july 1871 in the village of Meavy and birth registered 7th August 1871 by his mother Priscilla Lowden.

Hope this is of some use to you

Lis

You mention the branch of LOWDEN in Plympton Devon... this family is just part of my Devon family the other called Lowden branch were at Meavy Devon. The Plympton branch were the offsprings of Thomas Lowden and his wife Elizabeth and the Meavy ones were the offsprings of Edmund Lowden and his wife Harriett. These 2 men were brothers and had been born at Butlas Brixton near Yealmpton, Devon in the first decade of the 1800's. Their father was called John and was a tailor. When he got married in 1800 in Brixton to Mary Pepperell he was listed as a sourjouner occupation Taylor, by the vicar. He signed his name as John Louton (the name was written as Louden then Lowden later)some of his children were baptised as Lowton, some Loughton and some Lowden!

Although I agree Lowden is a scottish surname and is a clam sept of the Cambell's (originally Campbell of Loudoun; with its own tartan and clan badge ...a double headed eagle engulfed in flames & its own coat of arms with a man and woman standing either side of the shield... clan motto of Campbell of Loudoun is "I byde my tyme" ).....I have not proven any scottish root to our family in Devon. Clan chief is now Campbell of Argyll, but the head of the Lowdens was Barbara Abney-Hastings Countess of Loudoun/Loudon; but on her death it has gone to her son, Michael who resides in Australia.

Ant one who can provide conclusive proof to me that my family at Meavy & Plympton originated from Scotland...please let me know. But I think they actually do come from Devon as there are Lowden and variations of the name in the Exeter area pre 1800!

Lis
