Thanks for the thanks. At first I was going to suggest that there could have been an erroneous enumeration, but I now see that the apparently same William F. Lowe was still in Davidson Co., TN, in 1900, having married "Sissie" 14 years earlier.
Sorry. Good luck with your quest.

Thank you for your gracious research.
There is a bit of a problem with the extension back to Tennessee. Our William Franklin Lowe was in Dallas County, TX in 1880 and married to Lura (or Lou) as shown on page 23 for District 3. W F is listed as 24 and Lura as 16 in household # 202. Several of her family members are living nearby. In this census his birthstate is MO. Another lists KY. Thank you for the time you've given to help.

Regarding your William Franklin Lowe, it seems like he was born in Tennessee. In the 1920 census, they were right where you said: William F., 64, b. Tenn. In 1910, he and Lura and family were in Justice Prec. 2, Johnson Co., TX (W.F. Lowe, 56, b. Tenn.); same place in 1900 (William F., 45, b. TX [sic]). In 1880, I think he's "W F Lowe," son of Mal C? (elsewhere Malechi) and Elizabeth, found in District 22, Davidson Co., TN (age 25, b. TN KY TN); same place in 1870 (Wm., age 16). And same (District 22, Davidson Co., TN) in 1860 (Wm, age 6), parents M Low (38, b. KY) and Mrs. E [Low] (40, b. TN). Malachi Lowe and family were in the same place in 1850 (though Malachi said to be born in TN).
The 1880 gave Malachi's parents place of birth as Virginia.
Hope that helps.

During my freshman year at college I was surprised to hear the professor call out "Low(as in now)-ee(as in free)" when returning my paper. I hadn't heard about those "as in now" Lowes. But I figured it had something to do with how he pronounced his own name -- "Schulz -ee."
Can't get beyond my great-grandfather William Franklin Lowe (born who knows where c. 1854 and died 1920 in Anderson County, TX). He's buried in Rio Vista, TX. Wife was Lura Garrison (1863-1931).

Pronunciation of LOW(E)

As the previous responder noted, there are two ways to pronounce this surname. He noted the GERMAN name "Lau" -- pronounced like "Cow". To add another nationality into the mix, my LOW(E) ancestors stem from the DUTCH, and specifically the children of Louwrens Jansen von Kortryk, a man who immigrated to New Amsterdam in 1663 along with his brother Michael. When the British took over New Amsterdam in 1664, they demanded that the Dutch (who had been used to the patronymic naming system) take a surname that would not change over time. Michael's descendants took the name "Kortryk" or (anglicised), "Courtright". Louwrens' line took the name "LOUW" (pronounced like "COW")-- the first part of their father's first name, and later shortened the spelling to "LOW" (pronounced the same way). MANY, MANY people with this last name eventually added an "e" at the end of their names -- but STILL pronounced the name the same way. My line ended up in Spartanburg, SC. I have called several of these people and asked how they pronounced their last names, and they have told me that it is like "Cow". Others who are not of this line have pronounced it like the word, "PRO", and some descendants have "given in" to this fouled up way of pronouncing their last names because they get tired of correcting people. IF they get with "family", though, they will revert and be glad that someone knows how to pronounce their last name "correctly".

Since I started this little exercise, let me add my understanding. In my case, the Lowes originally spelled it Lau, the German name. That rimes with cow. The Americanization of Lowe ended up being pronounced both ways.

I am searching for my Great Grandma, Sally Lowe.

She gave birth to twins. One died as an infant/toddler. She gave the other twin up for adoption. (Nannie) The Hembree Family took her in. I believe Mrs Hembree was a cousin to Sally Lowe.

Its all very confusing as a adoption of that type would be back then. No records that we can find. Nannie Young or Hembree also went by the last name of Fealens.

ANYTHING would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Barbara,
I replied earlier today to your post on genforum concerning Sadie (Lowe) Holland and now need to correct some of the information here. Contrary to the tree on familysearch.org,
Hudson Lowe and Sabina Hunt did not have a son named James.
James W. Lowe was born February 21, 1827 in Ohio to Kendal Lowe and his wife, Elizabeth White.

1850 Census Adams Co. Ohio Sprigg Township page 96 #699 enumerated June 1
Kendal Low 51 M Maryland
Elizabeth 40 F Maryland
James W. 23 M Ohio
Rachel 19 F Ohio
Hetty 16 F Ohio
Exira 12 F Ohio
Henrietta 10 F Ohio
Thomas D. 08M Ohio
Eliza J. 04 F Ohio
Elija 9 months M Ohio

This James W. Lowe, son of Kendal, was the father of Thomas W. Lowe who married Amanda Dryden. Thomas W. Lowe and Amanda Dryden were the parents of Sadie Lowe who married Simon Holland.

Henrietta, daughter of Kendal Lowe, married 1st William Shelton, and after his death married 2nd Thomas R. Lowe (who was married 1st to Nancy Ann Shelton. This Thomas R. Lowe was a son of Hudson Lowe and Sabina Hunt.)

Use extreme caution when looking at trees on familysearch.org, ancestry.com, rootsweb.com, and gencircles.com. Many of those trees are copied from one another, passing on bad information, and not properly researched.

Jane and other Tazewell Lowe researchers...

There are about 4-5 Lowe/Low families in Tazewell, Montgomery, Washington and Lee Counties, Virginia that moved between these counties from 1770 to the present date.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

If you are conducting research on your Lowe/Low paternal lineage and you are unsure which Lowe/Low ancestral lineage is yours, or you want to confirm your lineage, a 25 or 37 marker YDNA paternal test on a male Lowe/Low would be appropriate.

Bill Bailey, San Antonio, Texas, 78258
Coordinator Lowe YDNA project at FTDNA in Houston

Hi,

I was born in Pennsylvania US, but ALL of Lowe side of my family was from New Jersey US. I've gotten back 4 generations and have yet to find where my Lowe ancestry came to the US.

Have a look at my tree. Maybe there is some information you can use or hopefully you have something that might help me find my family roots outside of the US.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/9363150/family/pedigree

1850s Lowe family from Hunterdon County NJ

Dean Lowe (1850-1897) and Emma Lowe (1856-1944) were my great-great grandparents.

Search either for a picture of their gravestone in Bloomsbury, Hunterdon County, NJ... or found at:

http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/ViewPhoto.aspx?tid=9363150&...

DEAN: I can ONLY find record a 1895 census record that shows he and Emma and a son Frank, my great grandfather. I suspect that Dean might have been a nickname or possibly a middle name that was never used in any birth or census records.

EMMA: I would like to find Emma's maiden name. No one in the family has any records nor does a search find marriage records. Again, I wonder if Emma is a nickname because records search for records of Dean Lowe and Emma do no return anything meaningful.

Does anyone have information, hints, tips that might help me find more info?

Thanks... Jack Lowe

Milcah is indeed a name, although not in common use today. The nickname was Milky. As for the rest of your questions, I recommend that you search probate records, Orphans Court, church, etc. Genealogically speaking, 1839 was yesterday.

Oscar Lowe was MY Gr-Grandfather. He married Mary Jane Beard, born 1863, from Schuyler Co, MO. His daughter, Maud Jane was my grandmother. Part of the problem you're having finding anything is his birth name was Young Oswell Lowe s/o Lewis and Pharinda Lowe. Oscar was a nickname (my grandmother always called him Oscar but Shaul Cemetery records in Ottumwa show his real name). He died in 1906 and is buried in Ottumwa. I used to help my uncle clean & weed the graves when I was a child. Email me for more info.

Re: Barton Lowe b.1762 Maryland

Hi Carolyn,

I know there are several contributor's claiming Bennett as Barton Lowe's son, but there is no proof of that. In fact, Barton Lowe living in Loudon County, VA from 1795-1806. Since census records show Bennett to have been born in MD, I don't think he's Barton's son.

That being said, a different contributor is of the opinion that Barton Lowe's wife may have gone back to MD each time she gave birth. There is no proof of that, or even any indication of that, but I suppose anything is possible.
I'm not comfortable claiming relationships like that.

So far (and I've been working on Old Bart a LOT), the only children who can be proven to be his are Rev. Barton Lowe and Gideon Lowe. I'm sure there are other children, but I'm not the type to claim that since there were a lot of other Lowes in Clermont County, OH during the time Old Bart lived there, they must be his children.

I know of at least two other contributors who have children listed for Old Bart that are pure speculation. Beware, I used to believe anything people told me when I started my tree; I've found that when it comes to Old Bart, there is very little to go on.

You can email me directly if you'd like to. mreed@indy.rr.com
Searching for anyone with info about the Edwin Lowe family of Buffalo, Erie County NY. Edwin, b. 1867, was the son of Moris and Elizabeth Stengel Lowe. They had children Harold, Raymond and Dorothy. Victoria's maiden name was Laubenstine.

Edwin is found working for the railroad in Chicago in both the 1920 and 1930 census while Victoria remained in Buffalo during that time. Edwin may be the Edwin Lowe who died in Cook Co., IL d. 23 Jan 1944. Victoria is last found in the 1948 Buffalo city directory.

Would love to have obits, cemetery info and anything more for those in this family, both parents and children.

Jack,

It doesn't look like either Dean or Emma is a nickname. I found Emma Lowe in the 1900 census living in Holland Township, Hunterdon Co., NJ. Frank is still with her. Emma has four children with all four still living in 1900. She was married 22 years ago (about 1878) and was born in New Jersey. I then found Dean and Emma Low in the 1880 census, Holland Township, Hunterdon Co., NJ. They have two children living with them, Liddy Ann (age 3) and Frank (age 1). This pushes her likely marrige date back to 1876 or so.

If you want them, I can send you the images of these two records.
Beulah Mae Lowe. Looking for information on her. She married my grandfather. Unfortunately she passed before I was born. I've only ever heard wonderful things about her. I would love to know about her lineage. Thank You.

The Beulah Lowe in my family tree was (married?) to a Kenneth Joseph. Kenneth Joseph was his American name as I understand he immigrated to America from Lebanon. They had a son Richard Kenneth Joseph (which stayed the family name, ie became my father's name). I have little other information than this. We could assume time frames based on my grandfather's age if I called him up and asked how old he is which I don't particularly care to do only because that is poor etiquette and he is a big fan of good manners(I'm guessing he is in his 70s). Let me know Please! if this is the same as your family :)
