Not sure if you have found him on the 1871 England census. I think James and Jane Lowther were mistaken as "Lowder" in this census. The census indicated that James and Jane had a daugther named Dinah (b.abt1870). I searched the birth registry for a Dinah Lowder and got nothing. However, there is a birth record for Dinah Lowther in the 1869 Q3 registry in the district of Houghton le Spring (Durham). And I also found a death entry for Dinah Lowther in the 1872 Q3 registry in the district of Stockton. Not sure if these were the people you seek but it may lead to something.

Also have you ordered a copy of the registry for James and Jane's marriage from GRO.gov.uk? You may find James' father's name and occupation there.

I'm not sure which Lowther family you are referring to from Bulloch County, GA. I have some (a little) information on my family tree, but the John Lowther I have was born in SC (?) in the 1700s and died in Bulloch County, GA. I do have family over in Ridgeland, SC, that have some information on the Lowthers. What's funny is my Mom descends from the Lowthers in Bulloch County, and my Dad's mother was a Lowther in Ridgeland. I think I've found way back that the descend from the same person. My tree is here:http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=84941&pid=-...

Camby Madison Lowther and your grandfather, John A. Lowther, were third cousins. Both were g-g-grandsons of Col. William Beamer Lowther:
Col. William Beamer > Elias > Jesse Madison > Johnson Joseph > Camby Madison.
Col. William Beamer > William > Alexander J. > Andrew Jackson > John A.
Here's a link that will take you to an image of Camby's obituary, plus some other related info:
http://www.doddridgecountyroots.com/html/fam/fam16247.html
Regarding your photo: I'm looking for a Rulina Lowther (b. 1825 or 1826 in Harrison Co WV) who married Eli Morris Gaston in Doddridge County WV, where they remained. There is some speculation that she could have been a daughter of Alexander J. Lowther & Sarah Ireland, and thus a sister of your g-grandfather Andrew Jackson Lowther. Any clues?

Did my family have a working (or closer?) relationship with the Lowther family? Does anyone know of any records that were kept by the Lowther family in Cumbria regarding their staff perhaps? Help!
I was going thru the messages on the board and came to this one about Camby Lowther's widow. Do you have any info on Camby Lowther? I have a photo of my grandparents with other relatives, written on the back are names of the group individually. One of which is Cam Lowther. I think it was taken in Mo. about 1895. I've never been able to find the connection to our Lowther family. My grandpa was John A. son of Andrew Jackson Lowther and Margaret Jane Hickman. I would appreciate any info.

Margaret as mentioned before I believe I remember the name Hickman in the Hardway family tree. I will have to double check with my Aunt Linda. I do not know anything about building a family tree. In the Hardway family, My Grandfather name is Merrell (not sure on the spelling) I know he did have a brother name James Hardway. Anyhow my grandfather married my Grandmother Neta Dove Benson. ( think that is how you spell her last name. They moved to Ohio from W. Virgina while my mother Pattie was young. Maybe you could help me on how to begin a family tree. Thank you for the email.

So i' am looking for more useful information that can help me find out more about my real mothers side of the family, so if you have any information that might be of any help to get me there i would be ever so greatful....
Lowther in early Harrison Co., VA/WV

The 1850 census for Harrison County, Virginia (WV) shows Elias Lowther 49 yo b. VA (b. ca 1801) m. to Salina 38 yo b. VA. Next door was Jesse Lowther 77 yo b. VA and his wife, Mary, 79 yo b. VA.

Online marriage records found at http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va

There are four marriage records for Elias Lowther: (1) to Rebecca Coburn in 1804, (2) to Margaret Bean in 1815, (3) to Susanah Morrison in 1819 and (4) to Celina McWhorter in 1828.

In the 1820 census for Harrison County there were several Lowthers enumerated. Elias had a household of 2 male 16-25 yo, 1 female under 10 yo and 1 female 16-25 yo. This is likely the household of the same Elias who later was married to Celina? And the same one who m. 1815 to Margaret Bean?

Has anyone identified Margaret? She likely died before 1828 when Elias m2 Celina. Her maiden name was written as Bean. Could it have been Behan? Does anyone know anything at all about her?

Has anyone been able to unravel the various Elias Lowthers who lived in or near Harrison County in 1820 / 1830 / 1840?
