searching for lost great-grandfather

Can anyone let me know how to find a my father's grandfather. We are not sure of his first name. His last name is Lu. He came to the United States back in the late 1800's and early 1900's. We do know that he came to San Francisco during that time. As of now we don't know where he is or if he's alive.
