Have you checked any ship's logs of passengers? Since you are looking for your great-grandfather, it is a lot easier than searching for many greats. Also, Have you checked the 1910 Census, 1920 Census, etc? Any one of those might be of help to you.

Julie,
Do you know when your grandfather was born? On the birth certificates they usually list both parents names. You first need to establish what his first name was. Is your grandfather still living? If so have you asked him what his father's name was. Perhaps even your father would know what his grandfather's name was.
Once you have established what his first name was you can go to the social security death index and see if his name is there. He may or may not have had a social security number but your grandfather almost for certain did. Obituaries from newspapers where they lived are also very helpful. If your grandfather has passed away and you know where he died at you can get his obit and it may give you a bunch of information. His death certificater might also list both of his parents names.
Good Luck with your search!

Can anyone let me know how to find a my father's grandfather. We are not sure of his first name. His last name is Lu. He came to the United States back in the late 1800's and early 1900's. We do know that he came to San Francisco during that time. As of now we don't know where he is or if he's alive.
