When I found Cornelius' and Anna's marriage license and saw the first name Tonejes I asked my grandmother about her dad having a first name. She was adament that he only had one name and that was Cornelius. Of course she was wrong, but evidently nobody in the family ever called him anything but Cornelius. I also have been in contact with people who felt that possibly the last name was Tonejes and it was changed when they came to America. There is also the possiblity that it was a name of a close friend whom they honored. There are some Tonejes' in the area where they settled. In Grandpa's obit it states that he came to America with his parents when he was 8 years of age and that he returned to Germany for a visit when he was 21. But then again this is what the relatives all thought. I have never found any ship records of the family arriving and I have searched extensively. Of course new transcripts are being done daily, so maybe some day! There is a record of a Cornelius Eiben 22 who came on the Ship Trave on 1 Mar 1889 and arrived in NY. It came from Bremen Germany and Southampton England. This fits with the obit stating that he went back when he was 21. Did you realize that there were 2 children who died and did not make the trip from Germany? If you have any questions I would be glad to try and help.

Thank you very much! I spoke with my Grandmother again today and independently of what I've read online (she's never even owned a computer) she believes that she heard some story about Cornelius changing his name at some point. It had something to do with having to flee Germany, she thinks. She has no idea where she heard the rumor at, or if it is even true, but when asked about a general time of her life when she heard it, she suggested that it must have been in her 20s (she's in her 80s now, so I don't blame her for not remembering 60+ years back).

I'm just starting to look into that side of the family, so I've not gone to any great lengths yet - Clearly a birth record would go a long way towards disproving the rumor. Since he was born in mid 19th Germany though...*shrug*

I do think there's something strange though with him not being mentioned in the 1880 census, and then appearing 5 years later as an 18 year old adult son. I suppose the Census could be incomplete, but that would be an interesting coincidence!

Thanks,

Brandon Stanley

I would be glad to answer any questions you might have. I actually am at my dad's, Emma's son, Lloyd,'s right now. I will be back in Nebraska on Monday where I will have my records. If you would like to to this directly, my e-mail is knorden1@msn.com.

Glad I could help some. I've been trying to find out more about my grandmother's side of the family, but as you might expect when someone with as distinct a name as Eiben marries into the family with the everyday name of Johnson, it can get a bit difficult at times.

One thing I've found that is weird is this issue with Cornelius' first name in records I've found. In places, I've seen the name "Toenjes Cornelius Eiben" listed for him instead. Also, I've seen some census records from 1880 that don't list him at all as being part of the Eiben family in America, though all their other children are listed. 5 years later though, he's listed as being a son, aged 18. *Shrug* I'm going to try to speak with my Grandmother [Marie (Johnson) Miracle] about it and see if she can shed some light. I know that she lived in the Beatrice/Blue Springs area for quite a bit of her life before moving away as an adult.

Thanks for replying. Christina was my grandmother (Emma)'s sister. I was in attendance, as a small child, when the picture was taken, but didn't have a copy. So thank's for sending it along. I remember my great grandmother and grandfather. They lived in Blue Springs and Wymore Nebraska, and we would visit them often.

Just spoke with my Grandmother this afternoon. Apparently Anna Lubben was her Grandmother, and Cornelius Eiben her Grandfather. I have a scanned photo of them, I think. They're quite elderly by the time the photo was taken. Their daughter Christina (spelled like that, I think) is my Grandmother's Mother. I believe they lived in Nebraska when she was my grandmother was a young girl.

2nd Lt. John F. Lubben, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; WW II MIA Identified

IMMEDIATE RELEASE No. 132-08
February 15, 2008
Missing WWII Airmen Are Identified

The Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO) announced today that the remains of three U.S. servicemen, missing from World War II, have been identified and will be returned to their families for burial with full military honors.

They are 2nd Lt. John F. Lubben, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.; . . . They will be buried on April 18 in Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C.

Representatives from the Army met with the next-of-kin of these men in their hometowns to explain the recovery and identification process and to coordinate interment with military honors on behalf of the Secretary of the Army.

On Dec. 12, 1944, these men crewed an A-20J Havoc aircraft departing from Coullomiers, France, to bomb enemy targets near Wollseifen, Germany. The aircraft was last seen entering a steep dive near Cologne, Germany. Several searches and investigations of this area and reviews of wartime documents failed to provide information concerning the incident.

In 1975, a German company clearing wartime mines and unexploded ordnance near Simmerath, Germany, reported the discovery of a gravesite northeast of Simmerath where American servicemembers were buried. U.S. officials evaluated the remains and determined they represented three individuals, but they could not make identifications at that time. The remains were subsequently buried as unknowns in the Ardennes American Military Cemetery in Neupre, Belgium.

In 2003, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) was notified that a group of German citizens had information correlating the three servicemembers who were buried as unknowns with the crew from the 1944 A-20J crash. Based on that information, JPAC exhumed the three unknown graves from the Ardennes American Military Cemetery in 2005.

Among dental records, other forensic identification tools and circumstantial evidence, scientists from JPAC and the Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory also used mitochondrial DNA in the identification of the remains.

For additional information on the Defense Department's mission to account for missing Americans, visit the DPMO web site at http://www.dtic.mil/dpmo/ or call (703) 699-1169.

http://www.defenselink.mil/releases/release.aspx?releaseid=1...

Good Evening Listmembers,

I have a question for the members of the list and how they would list a last name.

I just realized, after almost 2 years of reseach and already knowing this, that in Germany, many names have the two dots above the vowels.

ä -- would in english be spelled as ae
ö -- would be as oe
ü -- would be as ue

I have been looking for the last name for a passenger list as either Lubben or Luebben, and it never dawned on me to put it as Lübben. I have finally found the person(s) I was looking for.

Now for the question to the members..... How would the members list this last name on your family tree information?? I know they were Lübben coming to the states, but on one death cert, it lists as Luebben, and their tombstone lists as Lubben.

HELP!?! LOL

Interested in all your imput. And thanks in advance.

Lori L Hoper
Jacksonville, Florida, USA
