Facinating. Small world? I won't ever forget those ladies working in that kitchen and giving me the yellow coloring to mix in with the white margerine in a bowl about the size of a washtub! Your great grandmother, perhaps? They made huge quantitites of food to put out on those half a dozen or so trestle? tables for 50 cents, family style. Unbelievable, if I hadn't seen it myself!

Myrtle was my Great Grandmother. Her son, Bob Wygal, was my grandfather.

There were six children in all. There is actually one child that you missed: Catherine Ludwig Meyers born in 1877. I have pictures of them!

Hi Joann,
It's great to finally hear from someone about the family. I have been searching for information for a long time. Here is what I know about George and Susan. They came in 26 Dec 1846 with Philip. I have the passenger info if you need it. In 1850 they are in PA, Schuykill County. George, Susan, Philip, Catherine, Thomas and Susan. The next time I find them is in 1860 in Bennington with only Philip. Philip is my Gr. Grandfather. I just found his death date yesterday and plan to send for his death certificate next week. I will send you a copy when I get it. Your George and Susan must be mine too. Is George's stone near Susan's? The name Mary Spriegle sounds familiar, but I can't seem to place it right now. Did Caroline marry a Schuessler? I would love a picture of the gravestone. You may send it to my email: natural_alternatives2000@yahoo.com

I live in PA and was planning on heading out to the Warsaw Historical Society the next time I am in NY. My family still lives outside Rochester.

It was great hearing from you. I will get in touch when I get the death certificate.

Thanks.
Patti

My Great Grandmother was Caroline Ludwig from Bennington. I am trying to connect her with George and Susan. Susan (b. 1818, d.7/15/1890) is burried in the Bennington, NY cemetery next to my Great grandmother Caroline. I have a picture of her gravestone which says - Susan wife of George Ludwig born in Mackashuem, Baden December 18, 1818 died July 15, 1890. Next to that is the headstone Schuessler and a stone that says mother 1873-1905 and John M 1865-1942. On Caroline's death certificate it states her father was George Ludwig Germany, and Mary Spriegle Germany. I didn't know if you had any other information. If you wish, I could send you a copy of the gravestone. My name is JoAnn Wolf - I still live in the Bennington area.

Nancy Deem etc.

Nancy, I got your chart. Thanks. I am about your Mother's age, 80. I grew up in Clarksburg, going to Carlisle Grade School,Central Junion High and Washington Irving HS. We lived in Goff Plaza at 208 Concord St. Nancy Deem was my grandfather Peter Deem sister. She was born May 31, 1956 and died at the age of 79 on June 4th 1935. She had two other brothers, James and John and four sisters, Mary, Abigail, Martha and Emma. Peter died at the age of 89 and June 25, 1943. Nicholas Ludwig was born in 1853 and died at the age of 55 on October 8, 1908. I was facinated by your information about Ludwig's Inn,and I do have some memory of a Catherine and Gertude doing the cooking and running the Inn when I was there making colored oleo. I spent many a day on my grandfather's farm at Pettyville, who for some reason we called Uncle Pete, and after whom I was given my middle name. At that time, Uncle Ralph and Aunt Maggie, his wife. were living on the farm, and there were also two youngsters called Bertie, about my age, and Junior, several years older either living or spending a lot of time there. Ralph's daughter, Ruth may have been there but I have no strong recollection of her. As you know, it is Bertie, Junior and Ruth that I am most interested in following up. I will be sending your information on the my nephew Fred B.Deem III, who lives in Fayetteville NC and is very much into geneology on the Deem, Hunter (his mother's maiden name)families as well as some others. You can access his information by looking for "Deem" on the internet. My brother John Richard(Dick) Deem's email address is "johndeem01@comcast.net.He is a retired physician, is divorcd and lives alone and is, I believe 78. I am not2timistic about his responding to your emails, judging by his nonactions relating to mine. Good luck in your further search. Dick's ( likes to be called John) phone number if 540-258-2046.

Re: Nicholas Ludwig

I was reading through some of my grandfather's files last night. Nicholas Ludwig and Nancy Deem Ludwig started the Ludwig Inn. They sold it to Peter Deem, Nancy Ludwig Deem's brother, in 1910. Upon his death the property was sold to Catherine Ludwig Meyers and Gertrude Ludwig Summers, my Great-Grandmother Myrtle Ludwig Wigal's sisters. Who owned the Inn when you worked there.

Speaking of Peter Deem, my Grandfather, Robert J. Wygal, said (November 5, 1953), "Talking of pictures of figures. We have another on in the person of Peter Deem, who has just joined the Ludwig family at the Inn with the announcement that he is here to spend the rest of the winter. It is hardly necessary to add that he is a real addition to the interest of the place. It is beautiful to hear him recite Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar: with fervor and experssion: as if it were his own prayer for that final hour: for he is now past his eighty-seventh milestone, and realizes that he is facing the sunset of life. Mr. Deem is the son of Jacob and Catherine Fought Deem, and he was born in the vicinity of Pettyville, where he has spent his entire life as a successful farmer and useful vitizen. His wife, Viola Cook Deem has gone on, but he has two sons, Ralph Deem, with whom he has been making his home at Pettyville, and Fred Deem, a corporation attorney, at Clarksburg. We wonder how many of our readers who love and sing the song "Hail to West Virginia" know that Attorney Fred Deem is its author. He wrote this song while a student of West Virginia University at Morgantown years ago."

So far that is the only mention of Ralph Deem that I have found. My mother, Anne Wygal Keith, says that she remembers Fred Deem well, as she grew up in Clarksburg. She remembers the name of Ralph, but not much else.

I would love to get your brother's e-mail address to share information. After I sent the e-mail I felt bad about asking your age. I only did that because I wondered if you were of the same age as my mother who is 79...and try to place you in this puzzle of a family tree that I enjoy working on.

Have a great day! May God richly bless you!

I am going to try this again as a JPG. I really don't know how this works, but it says below that I can upload it, so I am going to try. This was information that I was able to come up with by searching online. My grandfather, Robert Wygal, died ten years ago, and my uncle just recently found all of his files which are going to take me a while to go through. Did you know my Great Grandmother Myrtle Wigal? She was the daughter of Nicholas Ludwig and Nancy Deem. She lived in Parkersburg all of her life. Do you mind me asking you how old you are? (I am 54!) Just curious since you said you worked at the Ludwig Inn. Thanks!

In the late 30's or early 40's, when I was near or in my teens, I spent some time at Ludwig's Inn, working in the kitchen, mostly mixing/coloring oleo. Relatives were doing the cooking, but I don't remember names, although Archer seems to stick in my memory. My grandfather was Peter Deem, and he spent his last years living in the Inn. So far, I have not been able to run down the Nancy Deem who you say was married to Nicholas, but am still working on it. I am also looking for information on my Uncle Ralph Deem and his daughter Ruth and her children, if any. Ludwig's Inn offered dining family style, all you could eat of mostly meat and potatoes for 50 cents! Wow. I have a brother, John Richard Deem who also spent some time there and probably knows more about the people involved. Should you desire, I will give you his email and phone number. He lives in Glascow, VA, should you want to pursue the matter on your own.

Need children of Eleanor Ludwig and Michael Hoff/Huff

I have found reference to an Eleanor Ludwig born 30 Dec 1771, probably in Douglassville, PA. She was the daughter of Michael Ludwig Jr. and Susanna Lutz and granddaughter of Michael Ludwig Sr. and Eva Rosina Bechtel.

When Michael Ludwig Jr. died in 1806, his will mentioned a daughter Eleanor married to Michael Huff. I am wondering if anyone has information about the children of Michael and Eleanor Huff. Also, there was a Michael Hoff with wife Eleanor who died in Pottsgrove township in 1810. (What is now Upper Pottsgrove is adjacent, or at least close to, Douglassville.) Does anyone know if this is the same couple?

I would appreciate any information. I am trying to find the parents of Richard Hoff/Huff who was probably born abt 1794 and died about 1819, leaving a wife and two young daughters. Richard's widow was Hannah Garber, daughter of Conrad Garber/Gerber and Anna Maria Bechtel. In 1822 she married John Bell.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Janis

Do you think Christian could have married more than once?
According to information I've been given by family, our family has a Christian W. Ludwig who was born December 29, 1837, in Germany. He married a Lizette Feig, who was born November 25, 1844 in Asch, Germany.
Christian's father was John Wolfgang Ludwig; his mother was Johanna Wnderlich. Lizette's parents were Johannes Feige, born July 28, 1801, and Margaretha Ploss, born March 30, 1806.
Christian had a son, August Ludwig, who was born October 26, 1867, in Philadelphia, PA.
This is my first post here, and I'm excited about the possibility of learning more about my family history.

Beth Blackmer Ludwig 1923-2009 b. Ohio

ENCINO, CALIF. – Beth Blackmer Ludwig was born May 8, 1923 in Youngstown, Ohio to Nile and Frances Blackmer, and she passed away peacefully on May 17, 2009 in Tarzana, California.

Beth or “Betty,” as friends called her, grew up in Struthers, Ohio with her two sisters and cousin. After being named Salutatorian of the Struthers High School Class of 1940, she entered The Ohio State University, where she met Lloyd Ludwig at the freshman mixer. While finishing their degrees, they were married on Dec. 22, 1942 and both graduated in three years, with Beth receiving a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with honors.

After graduation, Lloyd and Beth moved to Los Angeles, where Beth worked as a production control chemist for the Standard Oil Refinery, and later for Project Rand. After spending a few years in Buffalo, N.Y., they returned to the Los Angeles area, where they raised their four children.

In the mid-1970s, Beth earned a master’s degree in counseling and later a teaching credential. She worked as a science and math teacher for several years before joining Lloyd in his consulting pursuits. She was also a past treasurer and president of the Affiliates of UCLA.

Beth overcame her anxiety over flying to explore the world with Lloyd, and for several months they lived in London. Known for her sense of humor and her curiosity about the world, she was a joy to her family and friends.

Beth is survived by Lloyd, her husband of 66 years; her four children, Barbara Katzman, Dana Ludwig, Deborah Davis and Lisa Ludwig; her 10 grandchildren; as well as her sisters, Florene Van Meter and Barbara Williams.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, May 30, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Mountain View Mortuary, 2300 N. Marengo in Altadena, Calif., 626-794-7133.

Courtesy Post Only
