Only about 9 years late--but have just found your message dated 27 May 2000.
My grandmother was a LUFF--she lived in Grayswood near Haslemere,Surrey.

Perhaps by now you have the details you were looking for--was your Sarah the
daughter of William Luff and Harriett Luff (nee Raynsford) The other children being--Harriett-Mary Ann-William & James. And I did know who we used to call Tom Larbey--my late Dad's Uncle--Lived in Haslemere,Used to run a carrier business under the name of "Larbey and Luff Carriers we used to go to their house over the christmas period for a small get together.Tom was married to Mercy Luff--my grandmothers sister.

Hello I do wonder if you are still receiving messages. I have just found that my grandmothers grandfather married Mary Luff in S.Wales, She was born 1828 in somerset. Her father was Joseph Luff b. 1802 Ashwick Somerset who was married to Rachel Perkins. I can't link Joseph up to anyone. Can you help. Valerie.

I am researching the family of Abraham & Freda Luff who from the London 1911 Census states they were born in Russia.

A search for the surname "Luff" has not turned up much, which leads me to believe that this spelling/variation is not accurate.

Can anyone offer any possible Russian surnames that could have been anglosised to the English surname of "Luff"

I'm searching for information relating to Abraham b. 1856 & Freda b. 1858 Luff and their son Reuben b 1885 who I am told were Russian Jews. I'm not sure if "Luff" was their original surname I surmise they changed it when they came to the UK via the USA or perhaps directly from Russia.
I have Reuben married to Bertha Rimmer in 1907 in the East End Synagogue, London. No trace of them on the 1901 Census. Traced Abraham & Freda to the 1911 census but not Reuben & Bertha. Any advise help would be appreciated.

Charles and Emily Luff had 3 children: Violet Emily, Russell and William Beasley Luff. My Grandfather was William Beasley and he was born in April 1903. They are shown on the 1911 census as living at Victoria House, Northumberland Avenue in Southsea. William Beasley had 2 children: Brian Luff (my father) who was born in 1934 and Jill Luff (1942). William worked in H.M. Dockyard as a joiner for all of his working life. He died in the 1960's shortly after retiring so I have never met him.

How are you related?

I would really appreciate it if you could send me some info. Please send me your email address and I will give details of my address in an email.

I've a bit more information on my LUFFs....

Thomas LUFF (b. ? 1769/70) married Mary SIMKINS (b. 1771 Binfield, Berks) in 1795.

I've not found birth/baptisms for Mary and John, so I believe them to be the two eldest (between 1795 and 1798).

Thomas and Mary's other children were all born Sunninghill, Berks:

Robert (1800) (m. Mary WILLIAMS)
Catherine (1802; died 1802)
Thomas (1803) (m. Mary SIMKINS [his cousin])
Ann (1806) (m. John KNOTTS)
William (1807)
Jane (1809) (m. William Thomas BREWER)
Catharine (1811)

Mary was married to Thomas WILLOUGHBY by the time of her father's will in June 1830.

Any information on any of these people BUT Robert (my g-g-grandfather) would be most appreciated.

Luffs in Bucks Cty, PA, USA about 1800

I trace my branch of Luffs back to just before 1800 and residing in Bucks Cty, PA, where many still live today. David (b 1797, d 1872) and Susanna Luff were children of Peter Lough and Magdelena Muth. (There is anticdotal evidence that the name was changed at that point from Lough to Luff).
David Luff and Sarah Garris (b 1792, d 1869) had 9 children all born in Bucks Cty by 1836 (Julia, Katharine, Rebecca, Susanna, Alfred, Samuel, Joseph, Ann, Elmira). I have good descendents info from this point.
There is some other anticdotal evidence that Philip Muth (Magdalena's father) and Peter Lough may have immigrated from the British Isles.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this branch of Luffs (David, Susanna, Peter, or Magdalena)?

Sorry I dont know about any american members of my family only my Somerset and Welsh roots. To start Thomas Luff born in Emborow n/r Shepton Mallett 1795 death 1854, with all the other Luffs to the present day. Could you tell me where you got the info., about your Luffs in relation to Shepton Mallett. thanks Duncan Luff.

Thanks for your message, yes I have got a Thomas, Eli(Eligeh) and William Luff in my family tree living in or around Shepton Mallett area and have the dates of birth. There are several little Villages around Shepon Mallett ie Doulting, Holcombe,Emborow, Ashwick, Glastonbury and Wells all containing my Luff Family. Please can you give me some dates or places of birth and any other first names if you can so I can cross referance them, also to say even through Luff seems a very uncommon name there several familys all related, named Luff around shepton Mallett. Have you any connection to Wales as some of my family moved there about the 1880s, also Glen seems a Welsh name as I know my Eli Charles (Elijah) moved to South Wales working as a miner. hope this helps or I can help you more please contact me. sorry its been some time but here we go, I have a Thomas Luff born emborow c1795 to 1801 the family farmed at bodded farm and Hurling pot farm, there was a large family but in 1853 thomas had died after a cart crash.After this the family split up moving around, some went to Cardiff and Glastonbury. As Luff is not a commom around shepton mallett they must be related in some way, I have found some Luffs from the c1760 but can find no firm connections and wonderd if you can help. I live in wincanton at the moment and have visited to Emborow and Doulting. Hope this finds you well Duncan.

According to www.freebmd.org.uk birth registrations were Violet Q1 1901, Lillian Q3 1903 and Edwin Q4 1907.
Parents names unknown at present.
I have a photo of a house called "The Nook" dated about 1913 and am wondering if that was their home.

Sorry Karen,
We have not successfully matched our Robert Luff Born in England abt 1829.
He married Abigail Akins in Bowmanville, Ontario November 2, 1848.
We believe Robert had at least one brother Walter A. Luff also born in
England.
There are too many Robert Luffs to come to any conclusion as to where he
came from. Brick wall.
Again I am sorry I couldn't be of some help.

hi kris do you luffs have any connection with newarks who emigrated to ontario from suffolk, england. i have a set of great great gfrandparents one who was a luff married to a newark. its possible htat some luffs may have emgriated to canada and then maybe usa. i have a small luff tree going back to 1795 in uk and a huge newark tree going back to 1595 uk. best wishes karen

hi duncan, the only woodward i known is a pauline who might also use the surname cooper. her connection is with harriett newark who married henry luff. she gave me the newark family tree which she probably got from michael newqark. om the newark surname board michael is on there and when i looked at his message i was able to log onto his newark site which has lots of info on harriett,s dad and grandfather. her brother james went to canada and then the us where one of his grandchildren i think was quite prominment.has this woodward got in touch with you. i will be in cardiff for the carling cup final. i enjoy going there and will miss it when wembley is open. best wishes karen

hi duncan, i don't think i have pauline's email address ad i used the genes reunited website. her connection is through harriett newark but as a very long distance cousin over many generations. but i got a long family tree list of newarks. how are you doing? i tried other areas to find more on the luffs. i will going to my grandad's half brother's son office in a couple of weeks. its only 5 mins walk from my house. he has no connection with the luffs unless you include my mother who is his grandmothers grandson's wife but he does genealogy as well as being a boat yard owner on the isle of wight and a chartered surveyor. best wishes karen

James Joseph LUFF married Mildred CROWE at St Patricks Presbytery, Gundagai 28 July 1886. (1886/005263) Witnesses: Thomas SHEEHAN and Minnie (Winnie?) CARRIGG.

Consent was given for Mildred (born 1869) to marry James by William Joseph CROWE, as she was under 21 year old.

Mildred was born as Mildred M Quilter to Theresa QUILTER (no father recorded) in 1869. (11583/1869) Theresa Quilter married her first cousin William Joseph CROWE 10 August 1872. (1872/002317) I don't know if William WAS Mildred's biological father or at what point she took his name, and can find no other Geneagoly sources that refer to her.

Does anyone have any information on Mildred (CROWE) LUFF ??

You might want to work with your local Mormon Family History Center to see if they have a parish register film or fiche that can help you. Find your closest center from their website and check the Library links.

I am formerly of Nebraska and moved to California in 1982. My Grandmothers Maiden name was Luff, and she married George West. They lived in Unadilla Nebraska. Other Luffs that I am familiar with are Ross, Glen, Earl. all relatives in some fashion or another. Earl Luff was the Ownwer of A steel mill where I worked as a Draftsman for a couple years.
