There at least two Lufkin families living in Harwich, Essex about 1550 to 1625 or so. John Lufkin, Brian or Briant Lufkin and:

Jone (Joan) Lufkin who married William Oliff alias Lambert 21 January 1578/79.

Perhaps your Lufkins originally came from Harwich? You can access the original St. Nicholas parish registers and other information at: seax.essexcc.gov.uk

Also found a John Lufkin and a Brian Lufkin.

Both William and Jone made wills:

William Oliff, alias Lambert, mercer of Harwich, 25 Nov 1603.

Joan Oliff, alias Lambert, Harwich, widow, 1616.

Alfred Eugene Lufkin, bio

ALFRED EUGENE LUFKIN
Pennington Co, MN History p. 466

One of the earliest pioneers in Thief River Falls, MN was Alfred Eugene LUFKIN, who came to the city when it was still a fur-trading post. Pioneer life was still in evidence: Alfred shot a bear where the Presbyterian Church now stands.

Alfred was born April 25, 1874 near Caribou, Maine. He left home at the age of 9 yrs and went to Biloxi, Miss, where he stayed with relatives. He later came north to Perham, MN and visited his parents who had moved there.

Alfred later came to Marshall Co, MN, where he worked at the Red Lake Indian Reservation. He also worked as a pilot on a paddlewheel steamboat named "Margarite" that took supplies and passengers to Red Lake, MN.

In 1904, Alfred married Gunil REIERSON (whose parents were settlers in Holt) in Warren, MN. After his marriage, he worked at a livery stable and had a taxi service.

Alfred and Gunil had five children:
Orville Lufkin
Arthur Lufkin
Myrtle Lufkin
Esther Lufkin
Harryet Lufkin

Alfred was a partner in the Lufkin-Bishop Auto Company until his retirement in 1943. He lived with Myrtle one year and Harryet for 10 years. He died in 1954, Thief River Falls.

Gunil REIERSON was born Jan 21, 1884 in Marshall Co, MN. Her parents were Peder REIERSON ( born: Nov 30, 1848 and died Jan 2, 1933) fra Sigkah, Norway and Anna SOLLOM ( born Dec 4, 1858 and died Jan 7, 1929) who were settlers in Holt, Marshall Co, MN.

Gunil died April 1932 in Thief River Falls, MN

Orville Lufkin married Lilian HALVORSON and lives in Iowa.

Arthur Lufkin married Hilda VRAA ( who died) and then married Leola IRELAND.

Myrtle Lufkin married Francis SEEGER and lives in California.

Esther Lufkin married Robert CAILLIER and lives in California.

Harryet Lufkin married Lloyd LARSON and lives in Minnesota.

Isaiah Cole/Mary Lufkin Civil War Pension File (Massachusetts)

I just ordered a Civil War pension file and found out it was for the wrong person. Mary Lufkin (widow of Isaiah Cole who later married Zeno Lufkin) was listed in the index as Mary Dufkin and I was looking for the Dufkin surname.

If there is anyone who is related to these folks and would like these papers, I would be happy to send them to you. Here are some of the particulars:

Isaiah S. Cole, 1st marriage to Lydia Henderson, 2nd to Mary Porter Dodge
Mary Porter, 1st marriage to Joshua Dodge, 2nd to Isaiah Cole, 3rd to Zeno Pulsifer Lufkin.
Zeno P. Lufkin was the son of Wm. and Nancy Burnham Lufkin, and his marriage to Mary was his second marriage (no info on 1st marriage)

Isaiah Cole served in the 4th Heavy Artillery Regiment (Massachusetts). He was born in Orleans, Mass., and died in Beverly, Mass., on 15 Oct. 1876. He had a son named George E. Cole, who was age 50 in 1917.

Just reply to this message if you are interested. There are several records of marriages, deaths, affidavits from others who knew the soldier, etc. It is a large file.

Gretchen Maresco

Lufkins of Ohio/England

Recently found new information on my Lufkin ancestors. My GGGgrandparents, James and Louisa Lufkin, immigrated to the US from England in 1850 with their daughter, Mary. Recently found James and his children residing in Gallia County Ohio on the 1860 census. Walter (my GGgrandfather), his older sister Mary and younger sister Julia, along with Sarah (mother-in-law) are also listed. Louisa is not listed; perhaps she died in 1858 giving birth to Julia??

Any information or connection to this Lufkin family is greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Mickie

Re: Origin of Lufkin Name

I don't know if I emntioned it but I am wrtiting since 5 or 6 years a history of the Lovekyn to Lufkin family. I am currently writing the late 15th century and the original family in New England. I just came to the marriage of Thomas Lufkin to Sarah Downing. I was interested enough when it mentioned that she was descended from the Downings of Downing College and Downing Street.

So I embarked on a search with the following brief results.

Sir George Downing MP was the Secretary of the Treasuriy in England for a few years from 1667. He was also an entrepreneur and he laid out the plans for Downing Street. When it was built in or around 1680 it was named in his honour for his services to Parliament and the country.

His son Sir George Downing MP B 1685 d. 1749 bequeathed in his will an endowment to establish a College at his former university Cambridge. A proviso in his will that the bequeathment would only happen if his heirs and cousins died without issue and his branch of the family did not continue. After the deaths of his cousins other relatives contested the will and fought it in court for many years until it was finally turned down around 1800. After this the building of the College took place and was of course named after him. It is interesting he died without issue as did his heirs
What this means then is that Sarah could not have been directly descended from Sir George or his son but a more distant relative.
I hope this does not spoil things for someone.
Frank Lufkin

Sure, Jill.

Sarah's mother and father were John and Mehitable (Braybrooke) Downing. John's parents were Emanuel and Lucy (Winthrop) Downing. Lucy was John Winthrop's sister. Mehitable's parents were Richard and Joanna Braybrooke. I don't know Mehitable's maiden name.

You're right, Jill, Downing College is part of Cambridge University. I also believe that the Downing Street area in London was originally owned by the Downing

Any infomation about the Downing family you can provide me will be greatly appreciated,

JIm

Hi, Frank. It's good hearing from you. The origin of the name is fasinating.

You may remember, I'm doing a lot of research into the background on the women who married Lufkin men. And, boy, did they marry well! For example, Thomas Lufkin's (2nd) wife, Sarah Downing was of Downing Street and Downing College, part of Oxford University, fame. Her grand mother was Lucy Winthrop, sister to John Winthrop, the Puritan leader, who founded the City of Boston, MA, USA. And the list of Western European Royal and Noble families these women brought to the American Lufkin line is impressive.

Have a great Holiday Season,

Best,

Jim

Re: Origin of Lufkin Name

Hi Jim,

I have been researching for a long time now and just came across your old message. Actually Thomas was born in 1640 in Dedham Essex. (there is no new Braintree in UK).

My researches indicate. The original members of the family came to England with William the Conqueror or just after him. There was probably not a single ancestor but a group. They were French or Normans and the name comes probably from the Valley of the river Loue in west France. So they were the Louekyn. When they arrived in England they associated with Normans and were given land probably by the King. The name by around 1160, when we find the first real record of a John Lovekyn in Kingston on Thames near London was spelled as such. The 'v' substiting in latin for the French 'u'. The name was then pronounced as Loo-kin and the name still exusts in France today as Lucquin and is prom^nounced as above.
In England in the 12 th century thr Lovekyn family first settled in Kingston, and also in the counties of Essex, Kent. Shropshire and Yorkshire.

In the north od England the name by the mid 16th century was spelled as Lovekin. The name changed in north Essex in the early 1500s to Lufkin. About the same time in south Essex the name changed from Lovekyn to Luckyn then on to the names of today as Luckin, Lucking and Lukin. We also find some with the name Luskin and Lufkins.

I have researched the name since the early 1860s and for the last 7 years I have ben working on a history of the family but to date I am just reaching the year 1700.
I hope you find this intersting.

Frank

Which Sarah Lufkin ?

I am not a Lufkin expert by any means but I have a pile of Lufkin info I have not even started to go through yet sent over by another cousin of mine through my Greatgrandmother Adele Lufkin Nisbet b.1861, Illinois. I will keep in mind your query but until you hear from someone check out this link to see if your Sarah is listed on this LUFKIN webpage which has more than 50 SARAHs. You did not mention a year or state for your Sarah so I cannot tell.

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=DESC&amp...

Good luck, Randy

Isaac Lufkin b. 1800

Just a note so that many of you can fix your records...

I just found a number of posted family trees on ancestry.com that list one Isaac Lufkin with two wives: Lucy Forbush and Sarah/Sally Herrick Burnham. There were TWO Isaac Lufkins born in 1799/1800. One of them married Lucy Forbush and lived/died in the Templeton MA area. The other, my ancestor, lived in, was married (to Sarah Burnham) in, and died (in Aug 1880) in Gloucester. He's buried in the Sumner Street Cemetery in West Gloucester with his wife Sarah and daughter Judith (Lufkin) Currier and with his son-in-law Frank Bray, husband of Ora B/Arabella/Orrabell and their son Oscar.

You can verify there were two Isaacs through the 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 US Census records.

I'm still working on the parentage of "my" Isaac, so I don't know much else about either Isaac at this time. But please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Sue (Currier) Scanlon

Two years ago I left a message on here for what I thought was a vain attempt to find out about a family I wasn't even sure I was related to. Thanks to all of you who have help me connect to my family. My Grandfather was Augustus Lufkin son of Augustus and Lucinda Medora Lufkin. Its funny how two years ago I had no real proof of family and now my Greatgrandfathers Civil War picture sits on my dresser. Again thank you everyone especially Art Smith.

Origin of Lufkin Name

My name is Jim Wilson and my grandmother was Nancy Rae Lufkin of Gloucester, MA. Thomas Lufkin, one of the original founders of the city of Gloucester is Nancy's ancestor. Thomas was originally from New Braintree, East Anglica, England, and I've always wondered if the name is Anglo-Saxon in origin. Anything thoughts?

We do show, only, the following in our Lufkin file for your Mary Ann Lufkin: Mary Ann Lufkin, born 18 October 1821 in Gloucester, Essex, Mass, the daughter of Moses Lufkin and Polly (Mary) Saunders; she married Thomas S. Kenton, 25 October 1840 in Gloucester, Essex, Mass. The source for this information was the Gloucester, Mass. Published Vital Records. I'm sad to say, but we currently, do not have any children of Mary Ann Lufkin and Thomas Kenton recorded, nor any further clues or information for Thomas Kenton.

Sarah, the lady at the Gloucester Archives has been very helpful with requests that I have had in the past. Do you have Mary Ann Lufkin's parents traced back yet? Can provide you with the research information on her Lufkin lineage back to about 1674, when needed. Good luck on your quest.
What I know is:
1. Mary Kenton is burried in the Lufkin Cemetary in Gloucester, MA her parents were Thomas Kenton and Isabella Carr from NS.
2. Isabella was married to Thomas Kenton in 1840, and widowed by 1890 Canada census.
3. There was a Thomas Kenton who married a Mary Ann Lufkin, but I cannot prove yet that he was the father of our Thomas Kenton.
I am working on the rest.
Donna Mealey

Yes Lufkin. We have not found proof on paper but believe that his grandmother Mary Kenton is burried in the Lufkin cemetary in Gloucester because her grandmother was Mary Ann Lufkin, who married Thomas Kenton. We found their marriage record but no record so far for Thomas Kenton possibly a Jr. Maybe you can help. If I knew more about our Thomas Kenton, the father to Mary Kenton we could possibly get the records. There is a very nioce lady by the name of Sarah at the Gloucester Archives that is trying to help. I just need to close in the date to help in the location, but it could be that he wasn't born in Gloucester after all.
If you can help, I would appreciate it, Thanks Donna Mealey

You wrote "Lifkin" I'm assuming you probably meant "Lufkin, yes?" For many years, I've been researching all Lufkin families in America. Which Lufkin are you descended from? If you can show the Lufkin person, their father and grandfather with birth dates, that might be enough to see if your husband's Lufkin ancestor ties into any Lufkin branch in our files.

Hi Stephanie,
The 1900 Phillips, Maine census shows an Etta D. Lufkin, Rel:Si, in the household of Hezekiah M. Lufkin and Ruth W (Perry). Below her entry is: Henry C. Lufkin, GS. We have a Maine birth record for a Henry C. Lufkin, born 1896, Madrid, Maine, 2nd child, Father unknown, Mother: Etta Lufkin. We have a Rangeley, Maine marriage record for a Henry Clair Lufkin to a Rita Jula Ross, showing his parents to be H.M.Lufkin and Ruth W. Perry. Our records show Henry had three children. Any information you can provide will be very much appreciated. Then, I may be able to make a tie in to what we have.

There are ten Carl Lufkins in our files, yet only two who died in the early 1930's:

Carl Burt Lufkin B: 04 Feb 1899, Albany, Maine and D: 06 Mar 1932, location not known.

Carl George Lufkin B: 04 Jun 1888, Davenport, Iowa and D: about 1932, Location not known.

Is either of these Carl Lufkin your Carl Lufkin?

It would be very much appreciated if you would send me what Lufkin data you have so I can add it to our files and hopefully be able fill in some missing data for both you and me.

Any data sent will be shared with Dave Lufkin and Kent Lufkin who have also been doing Lufkin family research.

In one of your Emails you mentioned: "a Norman Lufkin in Levittown,PA. he has a lot of info" Do you know how to make contact with him?

Will be most happy to share any Lufkin data and related bibliography infomation that may help with your efforts.
Thanks again for making contact.
Hi April,

I originally did extensive Lufkin research from 1965 to 1980 and now that I'm retired, I've renewed my Lufkin research efforts. With those efforts and that of what Kent Lufkin and Dave Lufkin have added in the last several years, this file may hold some answers for you.

I find a Warren Edward Lufkin born about 1924 who does have a brother Norman Carl Lufkin born about 1929. Warren had a son Mark. Let me know if this seems like a fit. Since this particular family's data is a bit sketchy, any other BMD details about you, your Mom or your Dad and his parent's family, that you can add will help prove the tie-in and will be very much appreciated.

If this is a match, the records tie back to Thomas Lovekin of Gloucester, Mass. 1674.

Looking forward to your reply....
Hi April,

Harrah! Am tickled that we have a match.

The following is what I show currently on your father’s FGS and your grandfather’s FGS. Since the modern few generations in your line were not collected by me, I do not have the source data, for challenge and verification (if necessary), but hope to have it and other source data sent to me soon.

It would be much easier for me, if I sent you the other FGS by the regular mails rather than do eight more generations of transcribing. If it’s OK, send me your mailing address. My Email address is: and I’ll send you copies of your lines FGS. I live in Hawaii so the mail may take three to five days to reach you, usually.

Art

Warren Edward Lufkin
B: 1924 Boston, Mass
M: to Marilyn E.
