The Halifax Lugars on this thread started in Halifax in 1884 when an English sea captain married a local woman.

Lugar is an Anglo-Saxon name that is found in both England and Germany. Lugars have immigrated from both countries to Canada and the US. Any family connections are hidden in the mists of the Dark Ages - really!

The William Robert Lugar, who married Emily Louisa Bauld in 1884, had only one wife and died at age 59 when his children were still in their teens and twenties. The Bauld family owned a ship's chandlery (marine supply store) in Halifax. Captain Lugar was a commander of ships that laid telephone/telegraph cables under the oceans in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Captain Lugar's widow lived till age 98 in Halifax.

Henry Faraday Shapter was youngest of 8 children of William Robert and Emily Louisa Bauld Lugar. He was given the name Faraday after his father's favorite ship. He married Gwendoline Parry in 1924. They had 4 children: Anthony, Robert, Gwen, and Shelia. Anthony married Roxanne Moore and had a son, Derek. Robert married Masie Goat. They had 2 children, Janet and Brian, who both live in Nova Scotia. Gwen married Blair Dunlop. They had 4 children: Scott, Blake, and two others. Sheila married John Farquhar RCN. Their children were Peter, Sarah, Paul, Dianne, and Timothy.

Correction on the Lugars:
William Robert Lugar of Portsmouth, England, and his wife, Emily Bauld, of Halifax, NS, had 8 children with this birth order:
Emily Louise, Beatrice Maud (Trixie), Lilian Mary Dorothy, Anita Inez (born in Callao), Carmen Sylvia (born in Callao), William Robert Bauld (Bill), Madeline Victoria, and Henry Faraday Shapter.

I'm a member of a Nebraska Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. I'm helping our chapter genealogist with her research and I need a bit of information. I noticed that your library was ordering this book, and the only information I need is something to prove that Alexander Lugar (1818) is Barnabas Lugar's (1790) son. We were originally looking for a will. This is the information I've been able to retrieve, but it's not proof.

Barnabas Lugar, b. 1790, Mongomery Co., Virginia, son of Adam and Anna Margaret (Clapp) Lugar and Catherine Fisher, were the parents of nine children, but she could only find information on five of them. These five were Alexander, John Anthony, Harriett, Barnabas Jr., and Jacob. Alexander married Mary Ann Duncan and John Anthony married Margaret Duncan.

Is there any way that you could help or point me in the right direction?

The books are out of print, and Grandmother is no longer with us. But I do have all the data online on a private family site, and keep it as updated as possible. I do want to ask that everyone continue to notify me of births, deaths, marriages and other data pretaining to all the Lugar family. Thanks so much for your email. I reached out to Kaye and was able to provide her info on my Husband's line. She was very appreciative! She said that the book is no longer in print but that she would invite me to a "family only" website that has the 2nd book copied there along with lots of pictures. I had no idea the family was so large. Kaye said the tree has 1600+ names. I'm amazed. Thanks again!

Kaye Vanfleet has a family history on Family Tree and she is probably the only one who can get you a copy of her Grandmothers book. Actually Kaye help her. Well to the Lugar family, I descend down through Elizabeth that married James Smith.

In the 1850 census George W.Lugar (b abt 1779, son of Adam) is shown living with the family of Jacob (b. abt 1802, VA) and Ann Moorman (b. abt 1810, VA), in Monroe Township, Grant County Indiana. I have to wonder if Ann might be one of his daughters; I can find no records to support this, but wondered if anyone knew if/how George Lugar was related tot the Jacob Moorman family. By 1860 he was living with his son John Lugar in Monroe, Grant, IN

You will find the marriage of William Robert Lugar and Emily Bauld on our web site at www.novascotiagenealogy.com as well as a birth and marriages of a number of their children.
William R Lugar was the first Captain of the Cable Steamer Mackay-Bennett when it came into service for the Commercial Cable Company in 1885 and was stationed at Halifax. Only one daughter was born in Nova Scotia and that was Emily Louise, Her older sister Carman Sylvia Lugar was born in Callao, South America and all the other children in England.

Hi! I've just begun researching my husband, Phillip Orr Lugar's family. He is a direct descendant of Adam Lugar. I've listed his line below. He and his two sisters didn't know they had any relatives. Surprise! We had no idea there are so many Lugar's in the U.S. I'm searching for how we can get a copy of Twila Mae Lugar Grave's book. Do you know where I can buy a copy?

I'm also trying to research Adam Lugar's parents. Through this site I was able to find what I think is his Father and GrandFather - Johann Leicher Loecher and Johann Heinrich Luser - all the way back to the 15th Century! Do you know if this is in fact correct? Looks like the Lugar family has a Castle in Germany!

Reginald S. Bauld's name popped up in connection to my family (through many different lines / generations). I am searching the REDMOND family of which his mother, and her mother, and her mother and her dad I think, lol) meet back into my branch.

I came across your entry on the name Luggar. I have a Martha Luggar , b. Abt 1770 in Plympton, Devon, and she married into my family, Thomas Forwood [Lieut Navy] who was born 23 Aug 1763 in St Andrews Parish, Plymouth, Devon. We have never found any info on Martha Luggar and was hoping you may have her in your list of names.

Captain Lugar mother and fater were Joseph and Mary Lugar who were the very first pioneers of Grant County settling on Lugar Creek in 1828

Deborah, I passed the info on to Grams this morning. She smiled and you could tell it made her feel great to think all her work went to a good use by others. She is 103 years old now, and still prizes her heritage and love of the family past and present.

It has been my great pleasure not only to have helped with the production and publication of the first book, and continuing on with her work from both the first "Desc. of Adam Lugar" then on to "More Desc. of Adam Lugar", and now to the latest, (which includes the first and second book) to "Kith and Kin of Adam Lugar", which is now updated, but available to those who would like a copy.

My name is Briana my mom is your cousin, Janet Lugar daughter of Bob Lugar and Maisie Lugar. I am 14 years old and have a brother Zachary William Faraday Miller. I was just looking up some past on the LUGARS side and found this, I saw my uncle Brian Lugar and aunt Donna Lugar have both posted as well.

Forgot to mention, this was my grandmother (Twila Lugar Graves) uncle. and He taught her how to hang paper many years ago, which she did for many years. I am attempting to keep up her data work for an upcoming and updated book on the Lugars. I had truely hoped to have it ready to print by this week, in honor of grams birthday, but have been so busy with her daughters funeral and all have had to push it back by about two weeks.

Just a quick note to let you all know Twila will turn 102 years young on Oct. 1 2004, and is still loves to hear from all interested in the Lugar Genealogy.

Although she can not physically work on genealogy anymore due to failing eyesight and age, she still loves to get mail from all...We would like to see her get 102 cards this year for her birthday, to help brighten her waining days. This has been a sad month for her, having buried her last living child just two weeks ago.

I talked to brian and he cleared up the story that my ggg sister married william robert lugar and they had seven children so this would make us related. I don't know how we're related, but we are in some way. this clears the mystery. I am still wondering if all of the wil and william baulds born from 1831, 1864, and 1893 are buried together at fairview cemetery. do you know about this// brian said the baulds are buried near the lugars. I was thinking that it might be good to get pictures of my ancestors that are buried in the fairview cemetery. any information you may have would be appreciated and I look forward to continuuing our dialogue

I believe that my ggg sister married a william robert lugar. my gg got the name william cecil lugar bauld. i am not sure about a David Lugar, but would like any information you have on the Lugars and Baulds.
