obit for August Luke, born Sweden, died 1923 Kansas

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, June 14, 1923, page 1:
AUGUST LUKE
August Luke, one of the best known men of the Ada neighborhood, died last week Wednesday at his home near Ada. He had been suffering from blood poisoning resulting from a general infection in his entire system.
Mr. Luke was one of the real old timers of the county. He came to Ada forty-nine years ago, when he was only nine years old, and settled on a claim. Through the assistance of neighbors, he managed to keep off others who would have jumped the claim before he was of age, and as soon as he reached the age of twenty-one he homesteaded the land. Ever since that time he had lived on the homestead and was one of the familiar figures of that part of the county.
Mr. Luke was a very eccentric sort of individual. He seemed to be afraid of women and never married, but lived a life of seclusion, never attending any sort of entertainments not religious ceremonies. Nevertheless, he had much to do with the building of the town of Ada. He erected several residences there, selling them often after they were built, and at the time of his death owned five or six properties in the town. He also owned a tract of several vacant lots, planted to trees, which he willed to the city of Ada for a park.
The deceased had four hundred forty acres of land in that part of the county, all of which he willed to a nephew, Ora C. Swedlund, of Galesburg, Illinois. He had several thousand dollars worth of other property which will be divided up among other relatives.
A.G. Johnson, of this city, is a full brother to the deceased. Mr. Johnson was the oldest son of the Luke family, and in the old country the eldest son takes the father's name adding the affix "son." That is how he happens to have the name of Johnson instead of Luke. The deceased also leaves a sister, Mrs. Clara Swedlund, of Galesburg, Illinois; a half sister, Mrs. B.F. Grace, of Ada, and a half brother, Chas. Luke, of Topeka.
The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from the Baptist church at Ada, the Baptist minister there officiating. Interment was made in the Ada cemetery.

obit for Kate Luke, born 1832 Sweden, died 1903 Kansas

Minneapolis Messenger, Ottawa County, Kansas, Nov. 12, 1903, page 3:
Ada -- It is with sorrow we are called upon to record the death of Mrs. Kate Luke, who was a pioneer settler in this section of the country. The funeral services were held in the M.E. church last Saturday and were conducted by Rev. Kerr, assisted by Rev. Clark, after which she was laid to rest in Fairview cemetery, there to await the sound of the trumpet. She died a good consistent Christian and did not fear the pangs of death. She passed off very gently as if she had gone to sleep. She was born on March 22nd, 1832, in Sweden and confessed Christianity in 1848. On Aug. 30, 1862 she came to America and lived in Illinois 11 years, and came to Kansas in 1878. She was a Lutheran in belief but not being where she could attend Lutheran services united with the M.E. church at Ada, in 1887. She was the mother of nine children, seven of whom have passed over the river of death. She leaves a son and a daughter to mourn her loss, Chas. Luke and Mrs. B.F. Grace. She has some grandchildren in St. Louis, Mo. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved, and hope they will be prepared to meet in that better land where parting will be no more, and where all tears will be wiped away.

Hi: I am looking for information on James LUKE who was born about 1808 in either GA or SC. He married Martha REED in about 1832, not sure where. He moved to Kemper County, Mississippi before 1833, when his first child was born there. My great grandfather, Thomas Wilbur LUKE is his grandson. Any assistance about James LUKE or Martha REED Luke would be wonderful. I have quite a bit of information up to James and Martha, but not much after that. (My cousin published a terrific book - "Gone Before: James Luke of Kemper CO Mississippi and his descendents.") Thanks, Linda

I am stuck on finding any information on my maternal grandmother. She was born Lillian Jane Luke, 25 Jan 1920 somewhere in Pennsylvania. The only record I can find on her is a 1930 US Census, which places her living in the home of her sister Doris and her husband Melvin Hickey. I know she was married to my grandfather, Melvin L. Louch, in aprox 1943 in the state of Washington. He was in the service and they met at a hospital there. On 16 Nov 1944, my mother, Judith Lorraine Louch was born in Tacoma, Washington. Lillian died giving birth to thier second child in 1947. She is buried in Lansing, MI, however I don't know if she died here or somewhere else.
Does anyone have any information that may help me in my search? Attached is a photo of her taken around 1943.

obit for Theresa Luke Holt, born 1892 Kansas, died 1938 Kansas

Better Way, Minneapolis, Ottawa County, Kansas, March 31, 1938, page 6, col. 7&8:
Theresa Katherine Holt
Theresa Luke, daughter of Charles A. and Margaret J. Luke, was born on a farm three miles northeast of Ada, Kansas, October 13, 1892, and died at the home of her parents in Ada at 1:20 a.m., March 25, 1938, at the age of 45 years, five months and twelve days.
She was married February 12, 1913 in Melvern, Kansas, to Oliver Franklin Holt, who preceded her in death, October 6, 1930. To this union were born a son, Don Lawrence Holt, and a daughter, Margie Elaine Holt.
The family resided in Melvern four years and then lived several years in Topeka; moving back to Ada in March of 1931, where they have since lived.
Mrs. Holt united with the Antioch Baptist church of Ada, June 21, 1908, having been baptized by Rev. T.A. Clark. While in Topeka she and her husband were members of the North Topeka Baptist church, and when she returned to Ada she moved her membership back to her old home church.
Her years of faithful service in the B.Y.P.U. and Sunday school work, as well as church clerk, will bring an abundant reward. Mrs. Holt has lived a constant Christian life, which will long be remembered by all who knew her. She bore her burdens and sorrows without a murmur, exemplifying James' words, "Let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing." (James 1:4). Those who cared for her in her last illness frequently remarked that she never complained of anything done for her.
Mrs. Holt is survived by her father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Luke of Ada; her son, Don Lawrence of Topeka; her daughter, Margie Elaine of the home; two brothers, Maj. I.A. Luke of Washington, D.C., and H.A. Luke of Topeka; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie E. Sparks of Topeka, Mrs. Mildred D. Hudspeth of Wichita and Mrs. Hattie L. Boley of Topeka; and by a host of relatives and friends, both in Ada and in and around Topeka.
Mrs. Holt was the Ada correspondent for the Better Way for the last six months. The Better Way joins with other friends in expressions of sympathy to the family. Funeral services for Mrs. Holt were held in the Baptist church of Ada, Sunday, at 2:30 p.m., conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.V. Overman. Mrs. Mona Coatney, accompanied by Miss Virginia Lee, sang, "Going Down the Valley" and "Does Jesus Care." Pall bearers were Messrs. Leo Sidener, Rolla Shafer, Vance Zeek, Earl Lancaster, Henry Beichley and Ray Coatney. The body was returned after the service to the R.S. Todd Funeral Home and the remains were shipped to Topeka, where services were held for the relatives and friends there in the North Topeka Baptist church, with the pastor, Rev. W.C. Barclay, officiating, assisted by Rev. C.V. Overman. The body was laid to rest by the side of her husband in the cemetery at Hoyt, Kansas.
My gt. grandmother was Laura Luke. I believe she would have been born in the mid 1800's. She married Byron Brintnall. Byron was from Juneau County Wi.
Byron's marriage is listed as Juneau Co. which leads me to believe that Laura was also from the area.
I am unable to find anything on Laura however have found the the newspaper obits and the Juneau County death index to list the following Lukes:
Susan M. (Clark) Luke, 10,16,1946, Avon, Bon Homme, S.D.
Azel Izak Luke, 1-15-1874,Necedah, WI
David Daryll Luke, 3-17-1954, WI Rapids, Wood Co., WI
Simeon Wesley Luke, 4-16-1974, Avon, Bon Homme, S.D.
Helen Jean Luke, 1-19-1997, Mayston
Anton Lukes, (notice the s ?), 6-27-1957, Juneau County, WI
In the 1885 town of Fountain, Juneau County, State of WI census it lists a Byra (possibly an enumerator error) Brintnall family.
If anyone has any info or leads to a Laura Luke from the Juneau County WI area I would very much appreciate your assistance.
I hope the preceeding information is helpful to someone as it looks like I'm not alone in the search for our Luke ancestors.

David LUKE - New York City

Looking for information about David LUKE, born abt 1823 in Scotland. He was a weaver by trade. He immigrated to New York City by 1850, later moved to Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, NY, and then back to NYC. He is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Kings, NY in a plot owned by Robert WALKER. I'm researching the Walker family and trying to determine what David's connection is to them.

He is buried with his second wife, Harriet, who was born in 1827 in England. Harriet might have been Robert WALKER's sister-in-law, but I don't know for sure. There is also an Eliza NEWSOME buried in the plot, along with the families of Robert Walker's daughters, Mary Jane WALKER SMITH and Louisa Rubina WALKER OXLEY.

David's first wife was Elizabeth. In 1860 their children are William, David, Jane, and Elizabeth. He had a daughter Harriet with his second wife.

Place and date: Near Murvaux, France, 29 September 1918. Entered service at: Phoenix, Ariz. Born: 19 May 1897, Phoenix, Ariz. G.O. No.: 59, W.D., 1919. Citation: After having previously destroyed a number of enemy aircraft within 17 days he voluntarily started on a patrol after German observation balloons. Though pursued by 8 German planes which were protecting the enemy balloon line, he unhesitatingly attacked and shot down in flames 3 German balloons, being himself under heavy fire from ground batteries and the hostile planes. Severely wounded, he descended to within 50 meters of the ground, and flying at this low altitude near the town of Murvaux opened fire upon enemy troops, killing 6 and wounding as many more. Forced to make a landing and surrounded on all sides by the enemy, who called upon him to surrender, he drew his automatic pistol and defended himself gallantly until he fell dead from a wound in the chest

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Romagne Meuse, France

Cemetery: A.B.M.C.
I'm curious if anyone is searching a Luke family that may also include a variation of Luik or Luike. The family was originally from Germany.

John Luik came to America in the 1850's, married Mary Rogers/Rodgers from Ireland, and had 2 children, John and Marie.

John married Caroline Leitenberger, and they moved to Betterton, Maryland abt. 1900. John and Caroline had 8 children, one of whom (Harry) was married to a Nellie Kline and had 2 children: Winfield and Mildred (married a Fisher). I do not know what happened to Winfield and Mildred after Harry's death in 1965.

Marie married a Suplee and they followed John and Caroline to Betterton.

Thanks,
Lana Luike
