Am looking for PROOF of parentage for Lucy LUMMUS who married John McClellan(d) about 1820 either in SC or GA (no marriage record found yet). She was born in SC 1806 & died in Henry Co., GA 1899. She & husband John McClelland are buried at Hopewell Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church near Covington, Newton Co., GA. John died 1881.

One descendant says that Lucy was daughter of ROBERT LUMMUS & SARAH STEELE. A family tradition says that Lucy's Steele grandfather was scalped by natives while his wife & young family watched.

There were several LUMMUS ARPC ministers in the Chester Co. SC area, but cannot prove connection to them and Lucy. Nor can we prove connection to the Forsyth Co., GA, lines.

Any records on these families would be most appreciated. Will be glad to share what we know about later generations.
Shawn,
Thanks to you I now know where the Mitchell name that runs through the Lummus family comes from--i.e. Sarah Cobb's mother's maiden name, Elizabeth Mitchell.
John Andrew Jackson Lummus was my gg grandfather and he was also the brother of your Robert B. From looking at the census's, it looks to me like James Warren Lummus was the grandson of John Lummus, the Rev.War patriot. In 1820 Abbeville, SC census, John, Robert and James Warren lived very close to each other. I mention this since you said Robert Lummus's dad was Wm. Jr. 1745-1837, born in England. I would like to hear more on this.
I live 30 miles from Forsyth County, GA where many of the Georgia Lummuses lived.
Linda Daniels

Don't know if you are still on this site. The first Camper was Johannes Kemper who immigrated from Germany to the Germanna Colony, VA in 1715. He changed his name to John Camper. Some of his children reverted back to Kemper; but all Campers, as far as I can find, are descendents of John Camper.

Bob Camper

LUMMUS, JACK (Andrew Jackson) - Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient WW II

LUMMUS, JACK

Rank and organization: First Lieutenant, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Born: 22 October 1915, Ennie, Tex. Appointed from: Texas. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as leader of a Rifle Platoon attached to the 2d Battalion, 27th Marines, 5th Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, 8 March 1945. Resuming his assault tactics with bold decision after fighting without respite for 2 days and nights, 1st Lt. Lummus slowly advanced his platoon against an enemy deeply entrenched in a network of mutually supporting positions. Suddenly halted by a terrific concentration of hostile fire, he unhesitatingly moved forward of his front lines in an effort to neutralize the Japanese position. Although knocked to the ground when an enemy grenade exploded close by, he immediately recovered himself and, again moving forward despite the intensified barrage, quickly located, attacked, and destroyed the occupied emplacement. Instantly taken under fire by the garrison of a supporting pillbox and further assailed by the slashing fury of hostile rifle fire, he fell under the impact of a second enemy grenade but, courageously disregarding painful shoulder wounds, staunchly continued his heroic 1-man assault and charged the second pillbox, annihilating all the occupants. Subsequently returning to his platoon position, he fearlessly traversed his lines under fire, encouraging his men to advance and directing the fire of supporting tanks against other stubbornly holding Japanese emplacements. Held up again by a devastating barrage, he again moved into the open, rushed a third heavily fortified installation and killed the defending troops. Determined to crush all resistance, he led his men indomitably, personally attacking foxholes and spider traps with his carbine and systematically reducing the fanatic opposition until, stepping on a land mine, he sustained fatal wounds. By his outstanding valor, skilled tactics, and tenacious perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds, 1st Lt. Lummus had inspired his stouthearted marines to continue the relentless drive northward, thereby contributing materially to the success of his regimental mission. His dauntless leadership and unwavering devotion to duty throughout sustain and enhance the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the service of his country.

Source: http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/moh1.htm

BURIAL INFORMATION

Location: Ennix, Texas
Cemetery: Myrtle Cemetery

Born: 1915 Ennis, TX

Died: 1945 Killed in Action -- Awarded Posthumously.

Source, additional information and cemetery monument photo:

http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/pages_go/lummu...

Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Lummus

Memorial Marker in Austin, TX
http://www.homeofheroes.com/gravesites/states/images_go/lumm...

Note: This is not my ancestry.
Don,
I know this is a extremely late reply to your message, but coming across your name was a bit unusual for me. I am the daughter of Donald S. Loomis (son of Emory S., grandson of Emory H), and sister to Donal J. Loomis. How ironic that the names in the family (Donal(d), Charles, Joseph, Richard, Mary, and all forms of Katherine keep repeating themselves!
Brandon:

I decend from a Lummus family in Newton Co. Georgia. I don't have all the details, but I'll tell you a few that I recall off-hand. If this interests you, I can get a bit more detailed (and perhaps a bit more accurate!). My great grandfather was Samuel William George Lummus. According to my father, who knew him, S.W.G. served in the Civil War as a cook. He and his wife (Sarah?) had several children. The ones I recall are Tom, Sloan, John, Nancy, and Robert. Robert is my grandfather. He was a Presbyterian minister in Chester Co. SC, serving three congregations concurrently for over 51 years. I did not know him, as he died shortly after my birth. I do, however, fondly recall visiting the youngest of his siblings, Uncle John. Uncle John lived in a house near the banks of the South River in the town of Snappin' Shoals, GA. and died at a very old age 10 or 15 years ago.

Let me know if any of this sounds like we're barking up the right tree.

Thanks Norma. At this time after further research I'm having trouble getting back to SC. I know the beginning and ending--just problems in the middle. As to the Rain(e)s I have my line back to Randolph County, NC, my 4g-gf was born there in 1752 or maybe Caroline County, VA.
Strange all my lines came from NC or SC. Take care.
Lummus<>Loomis?

I would like to invite Lummus male descendants to join with us to test their DNA to establish if there is a connection between these two family surnames.

By requesting a test through the Loomis Surname Project at www.familytreedna.com you receive a discount on the test over the regular individual price. There are several tests available, from a 12 marker test, 25 marker test and a 37 marker test, each more expensive than the next. However, we encourage you to take the 37 marker test, as it gives the greatest detail as it pertains to the surname.

Through this test we hope to prove or disprove if there is a relationship between the Loomis/Lomas/Lomax/Lummis/Lummus families. All these families came from Great Britain over the years, but there has only been speculation whether these families are related, as no definitive paper trail exists that we know of. A DNA test will shed a tremendous light on this issue and may resolve it.

Please visit our website for more details,

www.loomis-family.org

Lance D.
Barbara,
A Lummus family with most of the given names that you list is living in Ellis Co., TX, according to the 1900 census, J-pct. 3, Dist. 22. The dwelling/hh # is difficult to read. If you subscribe to Ancestry.com, the image # is 71.

Just to make research interesting, they have Andrew Jackson Sr. as "Freimanis" for the 1920 census and "Leemonus" for the 1930 census.

Andrew Jackson Lummus, Jr. of this family was the WWII hero, Jack Lummus.
Margie
Reportedly my great-great-great grandparents Robert Hurt Camper/Kemper (think he was the 1st to go from the Kemper spelling to Camper) & Frances Mittie Lummus Camper are buried at the Bascome Cemetery in Tyler, Smith County, Texas. I've recently found a cemetery index but they're not listed. Would someone know if they are perhaps in unmarked graves, or if they had a marker which could be gone by this time? I was planning to go there but looks like I would come up empty. Thanks for any info or suggestions, Sandra

I am searching for Robert Silas Lummus born between 1854/58(some records give his middle name as Swanson and have the same wife and children) his first wife was Sarah Bell Hardy she lived only 5 years and they had two children, Andrew Jackson and Louis. He remarried but I do not know his second wife's name, but their children were Bessie, Silas, George, Luella and Mary (May). We think he was born in Itwamba County MS and may have died in Blue Springs, MS. Any help will be appreciated.
Barbara Lummus
