The following letter written in White County, Arkansas and dated May 23, 1851, was
written by George Washington Lumpkin, on behalf of his father Robert Lumpkin, and
sent to Robert's older brother John Lumpkin and John's wife Polly of McNairy County,
Tennessee.
The parents of these two brothers were Robert and Elizabeth (Forest) Lumpkin, both
born in Halifax County, Virginia. Robert and Elizabeth migrated to the area of Knoxville,
Tenn. about 1800, then to Randolph County, Indiana about 1831 and remained there.
Robert died in 1842 and Elizabeth in 1848.
STATE OF ARKANSAS, WHITE COUNTY:

Dear unkle, I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines in my father's name and my
own. We are all well and doing well enough. We have been living here five years and
have enjoyed very good helth though youngest brother Noah died with a inflamation in
the brain. We hope these few lines will find you and all your family in good helth. We
live 75 miles from Little Rock and 25 from Baitsville and 100 from Memphis and I live in
four miles of White River and father lives 12.
I was married in Kentucky and moved here the same fall. John Masengil, Henry Finger
and old man Rice all lives clost to me and appears well satisfyed with the country.
Father would like very well to come and see you though he is so fleshy that he can't
travel. He weighs two hundred and forty eight and is getting very white headed and has
a family of small children which is inclined to confine him at home in a considerable
degree He has a very nice farm of about sixty five acres in good cultivation and property
sufficient for ample support.
We want you to write to us. Us children is considerabley scattered. My two youngest
sisters lives in Ioway, one in Illinois and two in Kentucky and brother Thomas is married
and living here and has Every appearance of doing well. Corn is worth 75 cents to
$1.00 per bushel.
Bacon 10 to 15 dollars per hundred, flour $5.00 per barrell. New crops look very well.
We want you to come and see us and look at our country. When you write direct to
Plesant Plains, Independence County. We have three children all girls. Nothing more
at present but remain your obedient nephew.

The following letter written at Economy in Randolph County, Indiana and dated
December 3, 1837, was written by Nancy (Lumpkin) Bookout on behalf of her 71 year
old mother, Elizabeth (Forest) Lumpkin, wife of Robert Lumpkin, both formerly of
Halifax County Va. and Knox County, Tenn. and who migrated to Randolph County,
Indiana about 1831. Robert and Elizabeth are both buried in Nettle Creek Cemetery
in Southwest Randolph County. The letter was written and sent to Elizabeth &
Robert's oldest son, John Lumpkin (1786-1860) of McNairy County, Tennessee.
The original letter was folded, with the amount of postage and the person addressed

that I paid John Luvenss (??) that five dollars and it cost me six dollars and thirty seven
and a haf cents.

The following letter dated March 3, 1848 at Dalton, Indiana wa swritten by Robert W.
Lumpkin, on behalf of his parents, James L.Lumpkin, born Sept. 8, 1791 in Halifax Co.
Va. and James second wife, Sarah E. Thornburg, born March 19, 1799 in Tennessee.
James parents were Robert and Elizabeth Forest Lumpkin, of Halifax Co. Virginia who
migrated to the area of Knox County, Tenn. about 1800, then to Randolph Co. Indiana
about 1831 and are both buried at the Nettle Creek Cemetery in southwest Randolph
County, Ind.
James and Sarah came to Indiana in 1818 first settling near Richmond in Wayne
County, then later moved to Perry Township, near Economy. Deeds in James Lumpkins
name were issued in Randolph County in 1827,1832 and 1836. They are both buried at
the West River Friends Cemetery in Dalton Township.
The original old letter was folded with the amount of postage and the person addressed
to written on the outside and sealed in wax. It was written and sent to an older brother
of James.

Dear Brother and Sister:
I take this oportunity of writing you a few lines to let you know how we are gitting along.
I and my family is well at this time hoping these few lines may find you all well. Your
sister Sarah Bookout has bin sick last fall and winter. She is so sike isn't able to do her
work and part of the time she is _____ _____. The rest of Joseph Bookout's family is
well at this time. Brother Wm. Lumpkin is. Some better than he was when you was here.
The rest is as well as common.
Your mother is yet living. She was very sick last summer but is at this time as well as she
was when you was here. She lives where she did when you was here and Anderson
Lumpkin lives with her. Anderson and his family is as well as common. Thomas Bookout
and his family is well at this time. We have not heard from sister Mary for some time. She
was in reasonable health at that time. The rest of your relations in this part of the country
ar as well as common. We have not heard from you for some length of time. We have not
heard from any of our brothers for sometime.
Times in this part of the country is very dull. Crops last year was very good. Produce is
very cheap. Pork is worth $2.00 to $2.50 per hundred pounds. Wheat is worth 50 cts to
62 cts per bushel. Corn 20cts to 25 cts per bushel and other things in proportion. Cattle is
a very poor price, horses is worth $40 to $60 and 70 dollars. We have had a very wet
muddy winter altho we have had some very cold wether and some snow. It snowded
some yesterday. My children all lives at home that did when you was here. Robert
worked in Hagerstown last fall and winter. He is going to live with me this summer.
William lives where he did when you was here. Nancy lives in the north part of the state
in Porter County. I heard from her last week, she was well and her family also.
There was raised on my farm 500 hundred bushels of wheat last year and1000 bushels
of corn . I fatted 25 head of hogs, wintered 12 head of horses, 20 head of cattle, 30 head
of sheep, 40 head of hogs and have plenty of grane and hay yet to do me and some to
spare yet. I have 26 acres sowed in wheet and the most of it looks very well at this time.
I have 30 acres to tend in corn this year and ten acres for oats besides ground for
potatoes and flax and other things . That nise farm that you was lookintg at when you
was here was sold for four thousand dollars and it is now offered for sale for thirty five
hundred dollars by taking of some mill privalige. Land is reting at about the same prise it
was when you was here.
I want to see you very bad. Some times I think of coming to see you. I would like that you
would come to see us if you can. I want you to wright to me for if we can't get to see each
others fases very often that is no reason why we should not hear from each other. I want
us to wright oftener for I do like to here from my brothers and sisters very often. So no
more at this time and remains your well wishing brother and sister until death. Fare well.

Fred had no middle initial. Story is that when he was young he went to the barber shop, everybody had a mug with their name and middle initial. Since he didn't have one, they put an E as his middle initial. His marriage license does have the E. His birth certificate does not.
