Frances Priscilla Garcia Luna, who raised and inspired her children and grandchildren to achieve the American dream, passed away Monday at her son’s home in Camarillo. She was 90.

Frances was born July 2, 1918, in Peralta, N.M. A child of the Depression, she left school after the sixth grade to help her mother as a hotel maid. In 1939, she married Tony Luna. She, her husband, and their son, Tony, moved to Los Angeles in 1940 in search of a better life.

During World War II, her husband was drafted and served in the Pacific as a U.S. Army paratrooper. Frances’ home in Los Angeles became the West Coast headquarters for the Luna clan, including new arrivals from New Mexico and family members home on leave.

Throughout the war, she worked at Lockheed Aircraft as a riveter. Her support of her country and family members serving in the war made her a true “Rosie the Riveter.” She raised her children to value education and was extremely proud of both Tony (the lawyer) and Fred (the teacher).

She is survived by her sons, Tony Luna (Roberta) of Montebello, and Fred Luna of Camarillo; grandchildren, Anthony Luna (Julie), Dianne Luna Mejia, Claire Luna Hardy (Tim), and John D. Talamantes; and three great-grandchildren, Alec Luna, Roman Mejia, and Rhiannon Mejia.

The family wishes to thank Peggy Galanopolis and Carol Ferrante for their concern and kindness. Special appreciation goes to Sylvia Fulton, who spent many hours with Frances during the last several years. Frances’ caregivers during her final days also included Rachel, Leo and Roseanne Armijo, who came to Camarillo from New Mexico, and caregiver Linda Perez, who worked 24/7 to make Frances comfortable.

A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Griffin Mortuary, 1075 Daily Drive, Camarillo. The funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 2510 S. Fremont Ave., Alhambra.
