Obituary of Sigurd Lunde Painter
I am the grand niece of Sigurd Lunde and I am attaching his obituary taken from a Norwegian newspaper and translated to English. Is there anyone out there who may be able to help me. I am trying to get more information on his art work and to see if he did any other pieces, etc. I would even write to the church however I have no idea how to even begin to find it. I would appreciate if anyone out there could give me some direction. You can contact me directly at Everhe1959@aol.com. Thanks I look forward to any responses I may receive.

The 55 year old painter(artist)Sigurd Lunde from Bergen died in a motor-boat accident in Ryfylke. The body of the deceased was found Saturday morning at a small islet together with the wreck of the motor-boat. "Lensmannen"(head of the local police)in Jelsa who was there has identified the body from a paper that was found on him and from the registration number of the motor-boat. LUNDE had on Thuesday been to Vatlandsvag with his motor-boat.The engine was damaged and he wanted to have it repaired at a garage there. However, the garage couldn't repair it,and then Lunde took his row boat and tried to drag the motor-boat.During the day it started to blow, and people on the shore could see him row towards a little isle, named Kjolsvikskorpa. There he made fast the boat.On Friday the weather was still so bad that nobody could go out to the isle On Saturday morning a man row out and found the wreck of the motor-boat and saw the body of a man at the bottom near to it."Lensmannen"(the police) in Jelsa was called and he took up the body. Sigurd Lunde was a quiet and reserved person. He has done several works for "Husfliden" and on the exhibition in Bergen in 1928 he got a diploma. In the early 1920's he held a sole exhibition at "Kunstforeningen"(the art society) He has taken part in many works of embellishment and has done a great painting work to the altarpiece at the church in Sauda. He owned a motor-boat that he used to ramble with.
The Painter, Sigurd Lunde is Dead
The dead body of the painter, Sigurd Lunde from Bergen was found Saturday in the sea by a small islet in Vatlandsvaag Ryfylke together with the wreck of a motorboat. LUNDE had visited Vatlandsvaag Thursday to have his motorboat repaired. It had a problem with the engine. When he was not able to get it fixed there, he tried to pull the motorboat with a small rowboat he had. During the day, the weather turned bad, and the people on the shore saw the man tie his boat to the islet. The weather was still bad on Friday, and when a man came out to the islet Saturday, he found the wreckage with the dead body in the bottom of it. LUNDE was 55 years old. He had been in Sauda where he painted the alter piece in the church.
With the death of the painter, Sigurd Lunde who died at Vatlandsvaag in Ryfylke, a great and special person is gone. Even early on in his life he was deeply interested in the art of drawing, and he was not much more than a boy when he started to make a name for himself in the city's art milieu. He had a rare and sure sense of the "bound form", and 30-40 years ago "Husfliden" used him frequently to make patterns for them. (Husfliden is a big store in Oslo where they sell crafts, traditional clothing, reindeer boots, clogs, useful objects for the home and for display. They also offer classes, etc.)
Many beautiful and successful art pieces were done by him. He had a keen sense of the simple and decorative, and a thorough understanding of the technique of weaving; both picture weaving and other weaving. It was however the art of painting that interested him the strongest. He painted profusely and had a debut exhibit in the "Kunstforening", (The organization for the arts), in the 1920's. According to the times he was considered a radical, and he was called an expressionist. His art was expressive, but in the middle of all the spontaneity he kept a quiet, sure sense of balance, and artitistic leaning that pointed in the direction of the decorative.
He was able to try this talent by doing many wall decorations in Wicknes castle (or fortress) at Espeland. He would without a doubt been able to take this far when it comes to the area of monumental painting. His self-critique was so strong however that it gave him inhibitions. He never lacked for work, but he did not accept all requests.
His mind was contemplative and his nature shy. He preferred the loneliness and a very spartan way of living. Very few won his full confidence, and those who came in contact with him soon understood that as a person and artist he was quiet, wise, and reflective.
Among his peers and "VIPS", there was great respect for all he created, and people understood that he was fully equipped, and would have been able to much greater and important work than what he was able to during his lifetime.
