It's my family memory that Luongo in Naples, Italy is as follows:
A Luongo was married and he had 7 children.
After his wifes dead, he remarried a woman who had 7 children.
He adopted these 7 children. I don't know what their original surname was before adoption.
My grandmother, Rose Petraca, married a Luongo in USA. Her mother and father were from Avelino, Italy.
I believe a great many left Italy due to the volcano eruption.

Rachel, first thing you will need to do is find out where your folks originated from in Italy. If you have no idea I will try to help you. Luongo surnames are common in my area of research. And hopefully I can help you get on the right search track.

You can e-mail me at capriomcnamara@aol.com

Kathy

Luongo - helpful hints on Italian roots

Thought I would share some simple ways to find the village or commune of your family in Italy. Go to http://ellisisland.org which is where you can search all the manifests that went through Ellis Island from 1892-1924. You will have to register but this is a free site. There is a drop down link where you can do an extended search that allows you to put as much info as you might have.

If you can narrow it down and have a village and you don't know the region - go to http://google.com or any search engine of your choice and put in the village and see what pops up, it should help you find the province and region. Even the small villages or commune might have a web site with history and pictures.

You can go to http://infobel.com and bring up the Italian Directory and put in the last name and village and you can see if there are any of your same surname still living in Italy. If you can speak Italian and you think you might have a cousins keep in mind they are about 6 hours from East coast time - 1 PM here and 7 PM there.

If you know the region and province then I would post a new query on the board and ask if anyone knows if LDS the Mormons have filmed the area. If LDS has filmed your province then you are very lucky for you can go and view records usually from 1910 back to 1810 - you will have to go to a local LDS Family History Center, right now LDS Italy records are not available online.

Hope this helps in your search.

Kathy = researching Valva and Colliano, Province of Salerno, Camapnia Region

Hi. My grandfather was from Castello de Sasso, which is near Naples, but I understand it is actually considered part of the Caserta region. He always considered himself "Neopolitan." His last name was Luongo. He married my grandmother, who was from the same part of Italy. Her maiden name was Simione. They moved to New Haven Connecticut sometime in the early 1900s, but I'm not sure of exact date. They were married in NY in 1910.
Re: Luongo - Pomigliano D'Arco, Naples

Luigi Luongo
Caracas Venezuela

Re: Luongo - Naples

Jean
sorry for the late reply. I haven't checked this Luongo board for awhile.
My grandfather was Vincent (Vincenzo) Campanile - his mother was Lucia Rosa Luongo of Naples. My grandfather was born in Dec. 1895, probably Naples. He had one brother, Felice and one sister, Anna. We don't know if Vincent was adopted or if his mother remarried a Campanile. There is a lot of confusion about all this. I once found a postcard belonging to my late grandmother that came from her brother in law, Felice Luongo, in Naples (Pomigliano d'Arco section).
My grandfather Vincent/Vincenzo emigrated to NYC about 1911 though the family story is that he was a cabin boy and jumped ship in NYC. I know he went back to Italy in 1924, probably to visit his family, because I found an Ellis Island record for him. On the record he claimed to have been born in Ischia (an island in the bay of Naples) and that his mother lived in Ischia. I don't know if he was stretching the truth or not. My grandmother, Vincenzo's wife, was from Ischia. Maybe he was being a little bit economical with the truth about himself.
I also found an Ellis Island record for his brother Felice Luongo in 1924, several months before my grandfather returned from his visit to Italy. It seems Felice was deported on arrival in NYC. So perhaps my grandfather decided to visit him in Italy instead.
That's about all I know of the Luongo's. Having checked telephone directories in Naples, I recently found a Luongo living in Pomigliano d'Arco - perhaps a son or grandson of Felice.
If you think there is any connection to your Luongo's, let me know. There is something strange about my grandfather's mother - maybe she did have all or some of her children out of wedlock, hence my grandfather's surname of Campanile instead of Luongo.
Maureen

Hello. My maiden name is Luongo. My father was born Aster Joseph Luongo in Naples (Avellino) in 1914. His father's name was Mariano Luongo. My father's mother had three children out of wedlock, apparently a big scandal for a small Italian town at that time. There are so many secrets surrounding the family. I know that Mariano was born in Naples about 1894 and came to NY in 1914. The names you mention sound familiar but I would have to really dig around for answers since most are dead. When they were alive, they avoided speaking about the Luongo side of the family. I grew up in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn and never met my grandfather.
Anyway, I'm just beginning research and since your posted message seemed relevant I just thought I'd write to you.
--Jean Matthiessen

Luongo - Pomigliano D'Arco, Naples

My grandfather, Vincent Campanile, emigrated to NYC about 1911. His mother's name was Lucia Luongo, he had a sister named Anna and a brother named Felice. Last known address for Felice was in Pomigliano D'Arco, a suburb of Naples. Family lore suggests that the reason why my grandfather has a different surname is because he was put up for adoption, but he kept in touch with his mother, sister and brother. My grandfather last visited Italy in 1924. He died around 1962. He married Josephine (Giuseppa) Trani, Jan. 1918 in NYC. Josephine came from Ischia.
