Australian Luscombes

Hello.

I am an Australian Luscombe currently living in London.

I'm looking for information on Luscombes who emigrated to or were already in Australia in the mid 1800's, most likely Queensland.

My great grandfather John (Jack) Phister (born 1871 in the Ipswich region) changed his name to Luscombe before going to the Boer War in the late 1890's. It's believed Phister is of German origin.

There is a district in Queensland called Luscombe and family legend has it that this is the origin for Jack's name change, however some other family members believe that Jack had a relative with the surname Luscombe, and it is this line of Luscombes that I'm interested in.

Unfortunately I have no other information other than Jack Luscombe's mother was Maud Cavanagh (maiden name), and decendent from the First Fleeter Owen Cavanagh who arrived in Sydney Cove in 1788. Of Jack's father's christian name I am unsure but surname was certainly Phister. It's also believed Jack watched his older brother shoot dead their father who was not the nicest of people.

Apologies for the vagaries of this post, but if anyone has any further info that would help in a connection to Devon/Cornwall Luscombes it would be much appreciated, I'm assuming I should be able to trace my lineage back to the UK and therefore hopefully, somehow learn more of the Phister/Luscombe connection.

Regards,
Ben Luscombe
Samuel LUSCOMBE, b~1866, in London, England, 1901

Hello. I am trying to find out more about my husband's grandmother, Mrs. Annie (McLOUGHLIN) GAVIN, who died in MA/US in 1949. She reportedly was born in London, England, in ~1890, and spent some time in a Convent as a child. Then, ~1908 Annie migrated to the US and found her way to Waltham, MA, US, where she married James GAVIN. They lived in Cambridge, MA, where they raised their children.

This week I have received new information from different sources. Putting the info together, I come up with possible parents for Annie as: John James McLOUGHLIN, b~1856 in Scotland, and Jessie WAGNER, b~1856 in England or Ireland. They seem to have had 6 daughters, but 2 seem to have died young. Annie was the youngest, and she seem to have been born the same year that her father died (1890). The 4 McLOUGHLIN daughters went to the "Convent of the Sacret Heart" in London for a few years.

In 1899, the widow, Mrs. Jessie McLOUGHLIN remarried in London to Samuel LUSCOMBE, b~1866 somewhere. The 1901 census has them in London with Jessie's 4 daughters.

There is slightly more information on this extended family. But that is all I'll say for the moment.

I would be interested to find out when Samuel and Jessie LUSCOMBE died. I would like to know whether Jessie was still alive when her daughter, Annie, left for the U.S. ~1908. And, I would like to know whether Jessie possibly had a 3rd marriage, possibly losing 2 husbands.

Thank you for your time.

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

(In the U.S., she was Annie (McLAUGHLIN) GAVIN, and in the U.K., she was born Annie McLOUGHLIN.)

Hello. I'm trying to find out more about my husband's grandmother, and I just found out this week that she might have lived in London, England, as a child. The 1901 census for London has a Samuel and Jessie LUSCOMBE, 35 and 44, and they are probably Annie's mother and step-father.

The grandmother's maiden name was Annie Mary Magdalene McLAUGHLIN / McLOUGHLIN and she was born ~1890 in London. It seems her father, John McLOUGHLIN, died in 1890. Jessie, the widow, placed her 4 daughters in the "Convent of the Sacred Heart" in London after that. Then she remarried to Samuel in 1899.

I am very interested in when Samuel and Jessie LUSCOMBE died, as I would like to know if Jessie was still alive when Annie McLOUGHLIN left for the U.S. in ~1908.

(Full name, as I now know it: Jessie (WAGNER) (McLOUGHLIN) LUSCOMBE.)

Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)

Hello Ian

I have been working on the Luscombe Family Tree. My husbands's great grandfather Moses Luscombe was born in Loddiswell in the county of Devon (England) in 1842 and married a lady from Newfoundland whose name was Mary A...
we do not know her surname - she was born in 1849,
On the 1891 census it states that her occupation was a Laundress (Notem) and her birthplace as Overseas - British -St. John Newfoundland. Moses is not on this Census.
The 1881 census lists them both stating that occupation as Gunner CBRA - I don't know what that means.
Be pleased to hear from you wih any further info.

Carole Luscombe
Newquay
Cornwall
England

Samuel LUSCOMB / Susanna HILBERT - Salem, MA

Has anyone come across this couple? Samuel was born c 1754 and married Susanna (or Anna) Hilbert (or Hibbert) on Feb. 27, 1774 in Danvers. This is what I found from the MA Vital Records.

What I need to do is somehow prove that Samuel is the son of Samuel, Sr. [1722-1789] and Lydia (Begoe - Neal) after their marriage in 1752, Salem.

Any help at all would be spectacular! There doesn't seem to be much on this particular generation. Hopefully, someone will have a better resource than the Internet~~~

Hi Sandra. I think I have located the missing info on William Luscombe and his parents.

The info I have is (from Holne Baptisms 1700-1774) that William was baptised on 26 Nov 1700 and is the son of Phillip and Elizabeth of Buckfastleigh. There is also a daughter listed as Elizabeth, baptised on 26 June 1704. Further investigation has revealed Elizabeth and Phillip were married 8 March 1697 and Elizabeth's maiden name is Sherwill.

Hope this is of help

Regards Leanne

I would love to know where the name came from as a Christian name, and have always wondered if there was an Irish connection?
Very strange that you are living in Folkestone. My sister is teaching in Folkestone and an entire other part of my tree comes from Folkestone

Would the Thomas LUSCOMBE born 1799 Devon be the one who married Jane MOSES?
Children Thomas, Jane, George, Mary Ann, Henry, Samuel, Elizabeth, John, William, Edwin, all born 1823-1848, Sheepstor or Meavy.
My interest is the MOSES descendants, a far flung branch of my BARTER tree.
I'm trying to document the descendants, the dead ones will eventually appear in my Rootsweb World Connect database.
A recent census find was that one of the descendants, Henry, bap. Sheepstor 1833, was a butler for both Sir Massey LOPES and later his son Henry. In between he seems to have been a licensed victualler, and butler for a couple of different naval types.
Regards
Lorna
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hendersonandandrews...

I don't have a copy of the actual letter just a pretty poor transcription which has probably been spoiled due to being copied down many times by different people. It was allegedly written by the House of Lords Luscombe man's son (sorry I am working purely from memory right now as I am not at home at the moment). When I return (next week) I will send you a copy of the transcription to see what you make of it. I think I may also have details of the source of the transcription.

Is your other correspondent Graham Hawes ? If so, I am also in contact with him. He has been very helpful with the research into the Hawes and Winsor families.

Kind regards, Lorraine

Hi Lorraine

I tried to contact you directly but Ancestry wanted me to register.

I have had contact through Genes Reunited with another cousin who is descended from George Hawes and Sarah Winsor. He is descended from their son Frederick Hawes.

The family story was that both Elizabeth and her parents died of possible poisoning on the same day but research has shown that the mother did not die and lived another 17 years. The offical cause of death was cholera. I would love to see a copy of the letter that you have relating to this incident.

Yes, Thomas Luscombe worked for the Usher of the Black Rod in the House of Lords and moved to Guernsey. There are still descendants of Thomas living in Guernsey.

Legassicks I have traced back to about 1627. Pulliblanks back to the early 1700s. All are Devon families.

Charlotte

Hi Glenn and Leanne

Thank you. I think that from the information that you have both provided I now know that my John Luscombe, born about 1807 in Woodleigh is not John Luscombe who is the son of William and Dorothy.

My John Luscombe married his cousin Emma Luscombe in 1836 and appears on the 1841 census in Guernsey with his father in law and Emma's siblings.

Emma's father is Thomas Luscombe, born about 1787, Kingsbridge and her mother Elizabeth Legassick Winsor, born 1792, Kingsbridge ( these are my GGG Grandparents).

I am interested in the Henry Luscombe, aged 42 who appears with John's family in the 1851 census. I am assuming that he is John's brother.

Thanks
Charlotte

I know that this is an old query but I have found a connection between William Luscombe who married Dorothy Torring and the Luscombes descended from Thomas Luscombe and Elizabeth Legassick Winsor ( my line).

William and Dorothy had a son John, born about 1807, who married Emma Luscombe, born 1819, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth.

I had John's parents as Samuel and Ann but I recently found some information that his parents were really William and Dorothy.

I would be interested in any information about John that you have from the will.

Thanks

Luscombes somewhere in Devon

Hi All!! Im looking for my Luscombe ancestors.Phillip Luscombe and Jenny Hilson had Harriet Feb 14 1811
Robert December 7 1807 and Anne October 13 1824.They also had Eliza,Phillip,Jane and George. All the children were born in Cornwood. However there is no record of them being married there or death records.Robert is listed at South Brent in the 1861 Census as being married to a mary.Im only to believe that maybe they all moved pos to South Brent England.Anyone with info on these People.
