Heather,
I am so happy that you are able to help me. I have been trying for so long and not getting anywhere.

All I need is my grandfather's birth record or census record. Claudius (Claude) Clark Lusk was born 11 Sept 1877.

For John Lusk & Elizabeth Walker I need birth, marriage & death records. But I think if they are on a census as married, that should be ok. I will find out about that.

The same goes for Robert Kennedy Lusk and Elizabeth Merrifield. I am not sure where Elizabeth Merrifield was born but I am assuming that she was born in Luskville.

These are the only records I need.

Again thank you for all the information you can give me. I will get the info about the Mayflower to you when I get it.

Marilyn

Hello,
Well at least you have some options. Ok, below is a link to the cemetery website for the "Old Merrifield" Cemetery. Nathan Merrifield & his wife are there, Robert Kennedy Lusk and Elizabeth Merrifield are there as are others.
This website also includes St. Luke's Anglican Cemetery. This contains Joseph Lusk & Esther Balmer and your James Lusk & Alice Jane Gibson.
I have found here on Ancestry the 1861 census that shows Robert Kennedy Lusk & his wife (believe it or not she lists her name as Elizabeth Merrifield!)
I have yet to find them in 1851 or 1871, but I am sure that I will.
My mother spoke with Joan McKay today. Unfortunately she is not a certified genealogist, merely someone who loves family history. And there are no actual records other than census and tombstone that she can find. There was a massive fire in Aylmer, Quebec in the early 1900's that wiped out over 3/4 of the city. Destroyed in that fire were several churches and those churches housed the records that now we would love to be able to see.
I will check and see if I can find any obituaries etc.
But I thought I would send you this as a start. Maybe you could check and let me know what else you need.
How cool is it that the Merrifield family descends from the Mayflower! Amazing! Please let me know about this research!
take care & talk to you soon
Heather

Heather,
Thank you for answering me so fast.

The proof of birth can be birth certificate, church records/baptismal certificate, census, newspaper announcements or school records.

The marriage proof can be complete marriage records, Marriage banns, church marriage records, newspaper announcement, tombstone/cemetary records or divorce record.

Death proof can be death record,cemetary/tombstone records.cemetary records, funeral home records church record, obituary, professional/fraternal organization records.

Genealogist (use with caution) this means if the person who wrote the 1995 Lusk Family History is a certified genealogist, I can use all the infor in the Lusk Family History. But I don't know if she is. I know she has written a book about the area history. I have tried to contact her a while ago and never got a response.
Also acceptable are letters from Town Clerks and town historians.

Another thing you might be interested in since we come from the same branch of the tree. A while back I came across a site on the internet called Amanda...The Merrifield story. It states that Abraham Merrifield, the father of Nathan, and grandfather of Elizabeth is a decendaant of two families of the mayflower, Cooke and Warren. When I get this history complete, I will start on the Mayflower. It should be easy because I now live in Massachusetts and I am in the area that Abraham lived. Ther is a street in Worcester, Massachusetts called Merrifield.

I hope this helps.
Marilyn

Hi Marilyn,
My mother & I would be glad to help you. Unfortunately finding the records that you need is not as easy as calling the town hall in Luskville. The province of Quebec (where Luskville is located) has always been slightly out of step with the rest of Canada. Quebec is exceedingly proud of its Roman Catholic French heritage and records for that group are excellent. However records for English Protestant groups are patchy at best. Quebec has always recognized church records (baptism, marriage bonds, death notices by clergy) as legitimate proofs of birth, marriage & death. Infact my mother who was born in 1930 on the family farm in Quebec, only had to get her birth certificate last year inorder to renew her passport under the new regulations. She has spent her life using her batismal certificate as proof of birth. That said finding records is not impossible, just exceedingly time consuming and slightly frustrating. The records of life events were held by the respective churches and it was only in the past years that the Quebec Government has mandated that these records be transferred to their care. Records were often record in church registries that were stored in the basement of the church or in the home of either the minister or other member of the congregation.
What will the Daughters of The American Revolution accept as proof of birth, death & marriage? Does it have to be a copy of the actual document or do you have options?
We are quite willing to help you; this is our branch of the family tree as well so finding them benefits all of us.
We will start digging and see what we can come up with.
If you could let me know what exactly you need or any subsitutes allowed that would be great.
Heather

John J. Lusk of Green Co., NY and Kalamazoo Co., MI

Portrait and Biographical Record of Kalamazoo, Allegan & Van Buren Counties Michigan, Chicago: Chapman Brothers, 1892.

John J. Lusk of Green Co., NY and Kalamazoo Co., MI
names: Lusk, Schermerhorn, Talmage, Jefferds, Blakesley, Buell

Page 939 +

“Honorable JOHN J. LUSK. This representative farmer and resident of Oshtemo Township, Kalamazoo County, had his birth in Green County, N. Y., October 30, 1828. He is a son of George W. Lusk, of Ontario County, where he was born December 28, 1799, and followed the trade of a blacksmith. The Lusk family originates from Ireland, prior to the Revolutionary War, and the grandfather, it is thought, was born in New York. The last-named had six sons and one daughter, and of them Solomon, Elizur, Sylvester and George served in the War of 1812. The father of our subject enlisted when but eleven years old as a musician for five years, and served the full term. About 1848, he received a land bounty for one hundred and sixty acres. He worked at his trade until fifty-eight years old, and came to Michigan in the spring of 1854, locating in Kalamazoo, three-quarters of a mile from where he purchased a farm. After three years, he moved to Oshtemo and here he lived for nearly two years, removing to Texas Township. In June, 1865, he moved to California and died there June 9, 1866. He held local offices both in New York and Michigan.
The mother of our subject was Maria Schermerhorn, a native of Hudson, N. Y., born May 14,1804. She died in Texas Township, this county, December 29, 1863. Her ancestors came from Holland. Mr. Lusk is the fourth in order of birth of seven children, four of whom survive. He received a common district-school education and attended school four years in a log schoolhouse. He remained with his father until the spring of 1857, and in the summer season he worked on his father's farm, taught school during the winter months for eleven seasons, and had schools both in New York and Michigan and one term in Benton County, Ore.
John Lusk came to Michigan with his father in the spring of 1854, and subsequently went to California via the Isthmus. He spent nearly two years' time on the Pacific Coast on a cattle ranch. In July, 1858, our subject with two companions started for Frazier, British Columbia, as at that time there was a great excitement over the discovery of gold in that region. They only went as far as Corvallis, Ore., and it was while in that vicinity that he taught school. In the year 1859, he returned to San Francisco and took passage for New York City, reaching home April 7, 1859. He subsequently purchased his present farm on section 15, Oshtemo Township, and now has one of the finest farms in the township, consisting of two hundred acres, a part of which lies on section 10. The land was but partially cleared and he has since extensively improved and cultivated the place. Durham cattle is what he takes the greatest pride in and he keeps the best grades. He started in life empty-handed, and is now one of the most successful farmers in the county.
The Hon. Mr. Lusk was married, May 9,1861, to Miss Lydia Talmage, a native of Erie County, Pa. Mrs. Lusk is a daughter of James and Delilah (Jefferds) Talmage, natives of Pennsylvania and
New York, respectively. The father, a farmer, came to Michigan in 1853 and located in this township and county. Both father and mother are still living. Our subject and his wife have become the parents of three children: Ada F., the wife of Ernest Blakesley, a farmer in this township; Minnie, the wife of Lewis Buell, a farmer in this township; and Clarence J., who is yet under the parental roof. All have had a splendid schooling.
The original of this notice is a Republican, joining their ranks on the organization of the party, and previously he was a Whig. He has served as delegate to county, district and State conventions, and was School Inspector four terms. He was the incumbent of the office of Supervisor during 1863 and 1864 and has served eight terms since, making ten in all. The position of Chairman of the County Board was his one term, and the Courthouse was built during his term of service. Mr. Lusk was elected State Representative on the Republican ticket in 1888, and was reelected in the fall of 1890. During the first term he served on the Committee of Supplies and Expenditures and also served on the same committee during the next term. He has been a Mason since 1857 and one of the oldest members of Lodge No. 22 in Kalamazoo. Mrs. Lusk is a consistent member of the Congregational Church at Kalamazoo. Mr. and Mrs. Lusk move among the best circles of the township and are honored and respected people.” end

My mother was raised on the Kerr family farm (in Eardley, Quebec) which was only several miles from Luskville. But we will try to contact her.
take care & Hope to hear from you soon.
Heather

Yes, I am interested. I am a decendant of Robert Lusk and Elizabeth Merrifield. Elizabeth's grandfather, Abraham Merrifield fought in the revolutionary War and therfore I can belong to the Daughters of the American Revolution. But I must have documentation of my ancestry. I was at the 2 Lusk reunions and have the Lusk family history of 1985. My ancestry is documented in this book but I must have birth, marriage and death certificates to authenticate it. I tried writing to Joan McKay who did the family history and did not get an answer. I tried to call Luskville town hall to get some information but was connected to a bank. I need to know how to get the certificates of my ancestors from Canada, who to call or write to. Or if Joan McKay is a certified geneologist, what is written can be accepted as fact. But I need to get some facts.
Thank you for all the help you can give me.
Marilyn McLeod

His son, Thomas Chick married Elizabeth Cook about 1850 though I can't find a marriage record for them. Thomas and Elizabeth's daughter, Mary Jane, was born 1859 in Laurel Co., KY.

Yes, I found that reference as well but don't have any proof. Do any of the names I mentioned seem to "run" in your family? I contacted the Historical Society in Conn but haven't had any luck there. Thanks and keep in touch if something comes up.
EScott

I notice that you have Mary Armitage m. William Ireland on your family tree. The info was blocked but I wondered if you would like to compare notes. They were my 3rd great-grandparents. I believe that Wm was born in Antrim and family notes indicate that he had a brother who drowned in Canada. I have conflicting data on Mary's father (Francis or Richard?) and wondered if you had any info that might clear this up.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Per an application for membership to the DAR, by Amy Lusk, dated 1913: Jacob P Lusk Sr, d 1766, m: Elizabeth Phillips. Children were Phillip Lusk, Hannah Lusk, Effie Lusk, Peter Lusk, Jacob P. Lusk Jr and Wilhelmus Lusk. Jacob P. Lusk Jr was married twice. First to Elizabeth Aldrich, and then Sally Moore. Isaac M. Lusk b: 11/27/1825, d 5/4/1908, is the son of Jacob P Lusk Jr, and Sally Moore. Amy Lusk was the daughter of Isaac.

Research done by family in 1925 showed Jeremiah and Elizabeth Lusk having four sons, Michael, William, Jacob, and John. Would love to know if anyone can sort out the family tree back from Jacob P. Lusk Jr.

Hello Heather,
My maternal grandmother was Pearl Lusk (Hazel Pearl) and I am a g-g-g granddaughter of Joseph Lusk and Ester Balmer. Pearl was born in 1900 and died in 1963 and if memory serves, she was the daughter of Howard Lusk. She married Thomas John McMullen and they had 9 children. Although I did attend the first Lusk Family Reunion, I do not have a copy of the book, which I remember viewing. My daughter, granddaughter and I hiked and visited Luskville Falls this summer and it left me longing to know more about the family. Do you know where I could obtain a copy of the Lusk Family book? I would love to hear back from you.

Sincerely,
Paddy (Patricia McMullen Erwin)

Heather,
I also was at both Lusk Family Reunions. My name is Marilyn and I am on page 33 of the book. I can get information about the descendants of Claude Lusk, my grand father. I will be in Minnesota (right now I live in Massachusetts)in 2 weeks and can get most of his descendant's information. He moved to Minnesota as a young man.
I do need some information from you or anyone else. I found out that Nathen Merrifield's father(Abraham) was in the revolutioary war and therefor I and any decendant of Robert Kennedy Lusk and Elizabeth (Betsey) Merrifield can belong to the Daughters/Sons of the American Revolution. I need documentation of births and Marriages from Betsey Merrifield down through my grandfather, Claudius (Claude)Lusk. They will accept an authentic geneologist records which I think the Lusk Family Book 1985 is. But do not know if Joan McKay is a member of the Ontario Genological Society and if so, some documentation. And if not, how do I contact Eardley Township for these records?
Marilyn
Re: Lusks in Canada originally from Ireland

My mother(Lillian Fox(nee Dollighan) is from Vinton, Quebec. This area of the Pontiac county is well known for their Irish ancestry. A recent trip to Ireland left me wondering about beautiful Luskville,PQ. North of Dublin is a village that in the english language is called Lusk. In Irish the place is called Lusca. In the old Irish mythological story , the place was called 'Luglochta Loga' The Garden of Lugh. Does anyone know if the naming of village of Lusk,Luskville has anything to do with the mythological story of Lugh and the Wooing of Emer by the legendary Irish hero Cuchulainn. There are streets in Lusk,Ireland named after Emer who was said to have the 'Six Gifts'. The gift of Beauty,of Voice,of sweet speech,of needlework,of wisdom, and the gift of chastity. Michael Fox Rockland Ontario Canada. thank you!

Hello:
James Leroy Lusk was my great great grandfather. I have done a lot of research on this line as well as many other Lusk lines. As mentioned that 1870 period seems to be a black hole for many of his children.

How are you related?
Mike Lusk, Calif.
