Millard Henry Luther
Millard Henry Luther, age 86,
of 1012 Bayfront Parkway formerly of 210 West 6th St., Erie died September 7, 2008 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Erie. Born on October 26, 1921, he was the son of George Monroe and Eva Leopold Luther .
Millard grew up in the Southwest and graduated from the University of Texas in 1942. He served in the Army for two years and was assigned to the Third Army Headquarters in Heidelberg Germany.
He later did graduate work at the University of Texas.
He came to Erie in 1950
to be associated with Bache &Co. where he served as associate branch manager and vice-president of investments. He retired in 1983 as the firm was then named Prudential Securities. He was an active investor in Canada and controlled several companies listed on the Toronto and Vancouver exchanges. Millard was a long time member of the Elmwood Avenue United Presbyterian Church of which he was an Elder and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was also a trustee and treasurer of the Presbyterian Homes in the Presbytery of Lake Erie and guided them through a ten million dollar building program during his tenure. He also served as Treasurer of the Presbytery of Lake Erie. He served as the director and treasurer of the Erie County T.B. Society and helped it through five reorganizations to become the Northwest Division of the American Lung Society.
He retired in 1983 from there,
but remained an honorary life time Director of the Board.
He served several terms as President of the Erie Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Millard was an active Republican and served as Treasurer
and later Chairman of the Erie County Republican Committee from 1980 to 1985. He also served on the Republican State Finance Committee. Millard was a former member of the Erie Club and currently a member of the Erie Maennerchor, where he served as a trustee for four years, the Seibenbuerger and Shrine Clubs. He was a member of Perry-Keystone Lodge #392, for which he was a trustee for many years. Also the Scottish Rite Valley of Erie, Mt. Olivet Commandery #30, Knights Templar. He was a Senor DeMolay and has served as the Dean of the DeMolay Legion of Honor. He was Vice-President of the Masonic Temple Association and was a life time member of Zem Zem Temple. Millard was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Klick Luther in 1995 and his sister, Marilyn Luther Emerson.
He is survived by a sister, Alice Luther Kichlu of Tucson and several nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service Friday at 10:00 am at Burton Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. 602 West Tenth Street with Rev. David Rice officiating. Burial at Fairview Cemetery
