Re: John Luxon born St Enoder, Cornwall

Although I have been researching the Cornish Luxons for several years, I have only now come across these postings. My great-grandmother was Mary Jane (Polly) Luxon (b Ladock 18 Nov 1854), the eldest daughter of John Luxon and Elizabeth Betty (NB. the name is BETTY not BETTS). According to my records John Luxon was born nearer to 1830 than 1826 but I would be interested in any evidence of his birth or baptism, both of which have eluded me. Elizabeth Betty was born in Ladock in 1832, the daughter of John Betty and Elizabeth (nee Hughes).
Polly's younger brother, John Henry, married Susan Brand after his move from Cornwall to Sheffield where their many children were born.
It is possible that John Luxon's parents were John Luxon (b 1808 St Enoder) and Mary Rosewarn (b 1810 Gwinear). However, without the evidence of a baptism entry, one cannot be certain about the parentage.
I hope this is of interest.
Colin

I think we might be a strain of the family that you are trying to trace. I think the John Henry that you are referring to is my Great Grandad who walked from cornwall to Sheffield looking for work. My parents went down to ladock to see if they could trace the family tree back any further but we came to a full stop with two John Luxons as we still have to find which one our family came from. Any help would be brilliant.

Your request is rather broad. My family came from Winkleigh Devon (1500s), Tintagel (1600s), St. Gennys (1700s), Channel Islands (early 1800s), London (mid 1800s), Canada, then the US. I now believe that we were all Luxtons from in the earliest years. In 1851, there were only 200 Luxons in all of England.

Jim Luxon
Jane Luxon worked in Bristol in 1819 as a servant. I believe she came from Devon/Cornwall. She had an illegitimate son, John, in 1819 and I think she moved back to Devon. He married in 1840 in Topsham Devon and named James Luxon as his father. Any information on Jane would be appreciated.

The ship departed Plymouth London on 10/30/1878 and the passengers disembarked on 1/20/1879 in Bluff.
Hi David,
Thank you very much for your information.

For the entry of James and Mary Ann Luxon, where it says they had a son James aged 8, it should have been 8 months.
This is the family who moved from Devon to London of which I am a descendant.

I have been getting quite a bit of information about Onesiphorus recently, I just can't find the connection although I'm sure there must be one as he and his wife were their witness (James and Mary Ann).
Thanks again
Karen

Hi Philip,
Thank you for your reply. That would explain a lot. I have had trouble finding Onesiphorus's birth. I didn't know he signed the register Oney Sephres, I assume for his marriage.
I am just trying to tie up a loose end. My ancestor James Luxon had Onesiphorus and his wife Sally as witnesses at his wedding in 1840. James' mother was called Jane Luxon (Luxton) and doesn't appear to have been married although James does put his father's name down as James - a joiner. I have a feeling Onesiphorus is his uncle.
James himself was born in Bristol in 1819 and moved (back?) to Devon at some point after that.

I believe, but cannot yet prove, that his parents are the John LUXTON and Elizabeth PEARSE married at Dowland on 13-May-1779.

Did you know that Onesiphous signed himself as Oney Sephres in the register at his wedding?

David

Interesting to find my namesake. I am in Australia. My Great Granfather James William Luxon was born at Topsham 13 Sept 1837 Married in Australia in 1859. His father was James Luxon born around 1815. His Great grandfather was William Luxon born at Topsham 1786.

The census of 1851 show James luxon with his parents living at 239 Red Lion Court Topsham.

When in UK about three years ago I visited Topsham however Red Lion Court no longer exists - no doubt the Red Lion Inn has been demolished. Many of the Luxon families lived in White Street and that Street still exists.

Maybe we are distantly related?

It was interesting to note the occupations stated in the census papers - fisherman, lace maker, rag cutter, pauper widow of pilot, twine maker, lighterman, mariner, quay porter and ships carpernter. i don't think we have any royal blood!

Cheers

David from Downunder.

John James Luxon Pascoe

Quite a name huh, is he on your tree somewhere. All the info I have on him is that he was born about 1878, not 100% sure where, but it comes down that he was from New Jersey (Battokina Mill, Portoram Mill if you have heard of these mills and location that would be a help too) He ended up in Australia where he had a daughter with my gr. grandma out of wedlock. Her name Elizabeth Hannah Bland 1901 in Northern WA. Any information would be greatly appreciated have been searching a very long time. I'm not sure if all those names go together or if he went by John Pascoe, or John James Pascoe, or John Luxon, or James Luxon etc.

Onesiphorus Luxon

I am trying to trace exactly where and when Onesiphorus Luxon (Luxton) was born and who his parents were. He died in Topsham, Devon in 1879 aged 84. His children were born in various villages - Clyst Honiton, Petton, Heavitree, Exeter and Topsham. He was a mason and therefore probably had to travel for work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Luxon

Hi David,
You mention White Street Topsham in your message. My G-g-g-g- grandfather was born there in 1840. He too was called James. His father was James and his mother, Mary Ann, formerly Cox. For many generations the James's in the family were shipwrights.

A few years after James was born in around 1843 they moved to London, I assume to get the work. The Great Eastern was being built around that time.

Onesiphorus and Sally Luxon appear as witnesses on James and May Ann's marriage certificate. I think he must have been an uncle. Have you turned him up on your research at all?

I do have the 1841 census of Devon and there do seem to be quite a few Luxons in Topsham. I have not as yet found Onesiphorus.

Karen Syrett
