TWO ABRAHAM LIKE FAMILIES, COLUMBIA COUNTY, NEW YORK
1ST ABRAHAM LIKE (LYKE) (LEICK), BORN 1799, WAR OF 1812 VET, SON OF JEROME. Lived in Hudson, NY; Athens, Greene Cty, NY; Milton, Dodge Cty, MN;, Steamboat Rock, IA; Goodhue, MN; etc.
2ND ABRAHAM LIKE (LYKE) (LEICK), BORN 179O, SON OF NICHOLAS LUYKE AND BELETJE BECKER. MARRIED TO CATY LOSK, THEN TO JULIA SCUTT, THEN TO MARY E. LEE. Children were James Edgar, William, Melvin Theodore, Lydia M., others. Lived in Hudson, NY; Athens, Greene Cty, NY , Mantorville, MN, ???
My line goes back to Peter Like, b. July 12, 1815/16. I have reason to believe that Peter was the son of ABRAHAM (1790) by a first marriage. There are conflicting birth dates for ABRAHAM Like so there may be two men of about the same age that are being confused. Both Abrahams listed above seem to originate in COLUMBIA COUNTY then move to western NY and on to Michigan, Minnesota, etc. which just confuses all the family data.
We know Julia SCUTT died November 30, 1847 and is buried in Hudson, NY. Abraham then remarried Mary E. (LEE?) and moved to Greene County, NY and then on to Minnesota. I believe ABRAHAM and Julia may have had up to six children. Most information concerns James Edgar, Sr, Melvin Theodore, and Lydia M. I believe there may also have been Huldah E (1842), William (1836) and George Washington Like (1843/44/45) and perhaps a Henry. Lydia Like married Philo Joyner and they were living in Hudson, NY with two of their children and also Huldah E. Like on the 1855 NY Census. Huldah was age 13, born in COLUMBIA COUNTY, and was a "sister-in-law" to Philo. I surmise that Huldah was raised by her sister, Lydia, because her mother, Julia SCUTT, has died previously in 1847. Has anyone found a marriage record for ABRAHAM and Mary or birth records for any of these children?
Years ago I corresponded with a woman named Lorraine in Minnesota who is the great granddaughter of Melvin Theodore. Lorraine had info there was also a brother named William but did not have any definite proof at that time.
Peter Like named one of his sons George Washington Like (b. 1839). In trying to research George W., I have found there were at least two and maybe three men with the same name. I believe Peter had a younger, half brother named George Washington Like who was in the Civil war from Greene County, NY. My George W. drowned in Albany, NY June 11, 1862, just short of his 23rd birthday. The other George W. was a little younger and told the Windham town clerk at his enlistment that he was born in Hudson in April 1845. He said his father's name was ABRAHAM but his mother was "unknown". This fits well because Julia had died in 1847 when he was only two. Abraham and his new wife Mary were found in the 1860 Census in Greene County in Ashland and George was found living nearby in Windham with a farm family probably as a laborer. George survived the war and there was a George Washington Like and wife Mary S. found living in Rensselaer, NY on the 1920 Census. This George was 72 years old (1847?) and had been born in NEW YORK. This may
be the same man.
I believe my Peter may be the son of ABRAHAM and his first wife, CATY Losk (Lasher?),
although there may well be two ABRAHAM Likes. Abraham and CATY had a son William born April 8, 1813 and there was a William Like that lived next door to Peter on the 1840 Census in Hudson and an ABRAHAM lived nearby as well. In 1850 William lived next door to Henry Like so I think there may be a brother, Henry as well. We have been searching church records for over 30 years and cannot locate birth or baptism records for Peter or any other children of ABRAHAM Like and CATY Losk to prove my theory. Has anyone come across these birth records?
If anyone has located an obituary for ABRAHAM (d. 1887) I would appreciate the information in case it mentions his earlier marriages.
I know all the information above has been batted around before but the only way I can begin to sort this out is it there are TWO ABRAHAM Like’s, probably cousins, both from COLUMBIA COUNTY. We have pretty good proof to two completely different birth years but only one death date? If anyone can offer any additional info that might help sort these two men out it would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry this is so long but this thread needed a jump start.
Thanks for your help.
