Lyke in NY

Hi,
My great grandfather was Lewis A. Lyke born in 1840. I believe his father was Martin 1805-18070 and mother was Eliza(maiden name not positive on. they were between Niagara and Buffalo Batavia area. His son , my grandfather Lewis, moved the family to MI between 1916 & 1917 not sure why. Any info would be appreciated. my father has always told me that 4 brotheres came from Germany. He has never been sure of date and he said they changed the spelling to Lyke and that is why anyone with that spelling is related. doing this research I know how many others have connections.
Thank you so much

Hi Pam;

Just found your message. Johann Hendrik Leich came from the Palatinate to Philadelphia, where the Customs agent penciled in "Like". His descendants moved on down to North Carolina and then westward. Franklin Monroe Like, went from TN to St. Louis to work for a year and came home in time for the census of 1920, where his name was changed to Lyke. Thus, you have Like and Lyke families today in TN

TWO? ABRAHAM LIKE FAMILIES, COLUMBIA COUNTY, NEW YORK?

TWO ABRAHAM LIKE FAMILIES, COLUMBIA COUNTY, NEW YORK

1ST ABRAHAM LIKE (LYKE) (LEICK), BORN 1799, WAR OF 1812 VET, SON OF JEROME. Lived in Hudson, NY; Athens, Greene Cty, NY; Milton, Dodge Cty, MN;, Steamboat Rock, IA; Goodhue, MN; etc.

2ND ABRAHAM LIKE (LYKE) (LEICK), BORN 179O, SON OF NICHOLAS LUYKE AND BELETJE BECKER. MARRIED TO CATY LOSK, THEN TO JULIA SCUTT, THEN TO MARY E. LEE. Children were James Edgar, William, Melvin Theodore, Lydia M., others. Lived in Hudson, NY; Athens, Greene Cty, NY , Mantorville, MN, ???

My line goes back to Peter Like, b. July 12, 1815/16. I have reason to believe that Peter was the son of Abraham (1790) by a first marriage. There are conflicting birth dates for Abraham Like so there may be two men of about the same age that are being confused. Both Abrahams listed above seem to originate in Columbia County then move to western NY and on to Michigan, Minnesota, etc. which just confuses all the family data.

We know Julia Scutt died November 30, 1847 and is buried in Hudson, NY. Abraham then remarried Mary E. (LEE?) and moved to Greene County, NY and then on to Minnesota. I believe Abraham and Julia may have had up to six children. Most information concerns James Edgar, Sr, Melvin Theodore, and Lydia M. I believe there may also have been Huldah E (1842), William (1836) and George Washington Like (1843/44/45) and perhaps a Henry. Lydia Like married Philo Joyner and they were living in Hudson, NY with two of their children and also Huldah E. Like on the 1855 NY Census. Huldah was age 13, born in Columbia County, and was a "sister-in-law" to Philo. I surmise that Huldah was raised by her sister, Lydia, because her mother, Julia Scutt, has died previously in 1847. Has anyone found a marriage record for Abraham and Mary or birth records for any of these children?

Years ago I corresponded with a woman named Lorraine in Minnesota who is the great granddaughter of Melvin Theodore. Lorraine had info there was also a brother named William but did not have any definite proof at that time.

Peter Like named one of his sons George Washington Like (b. 1839). In trying to research George W., I have found there were at least two and maybe three men with the same name. I believe Peter had a younger, half brother named George Washington Like who was in the Civil war from Greene County, NY. My George W. drowned in Albany, NY June 11, 1862, just short of his 23rd birthday. The other George W. was a little younger and told the Windham town clerk at his enlistment that he was born in Hudson in April 1845. He said his father's name was Abraham but his mother was "unknown". This fits well because Julia had died in 1847 when he was only two. Abraham and his new wife Mary were found in the 1860 Census in Greene County in Ashland and George was found living nearby in Windham with a farm family probably as a laborer. George survived the war and there was a George Washington Like and wife Mary S. found living in Rensselaer, NY on the 1920 Census. This George was 72 years old (1847?) and had been born in New York. This may
be the same man.

I believe my Peter may be the son of Abraham and his first wife, Caty Losk (Lasher?),
although there may well be two Abraham Likes. Abraham and Caty had a son William born April 8, 1813 and there was a William Like that lived next door to Peter on the 1840 Census in Hudson and an Abraham lived nearby as well. In 1850 William lived next door to Henry Like so I think there may be a brother, Henry as well. We have been searching church records for over 30 years and cannot locate birth or baptism records for Peter or any other children of Abraham Like and Caty Losk to prove my theory. Has anyone come across these birth records?

If anyone has located an obituary for Abraham (d. 1887) I would appreciate the information in case it mentions his earlier marriages.

I know all the information above has been batted around before but the only way I can begin to sort this out is it there are TWO Abraham Like’s, probably cousins, both from Columbia County. We have pretty good proof to two completely different birth years but only one death date? If anyone can offer any additional info that might help sort these two men out it would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry this is so long but this thread needed a jump start.

Thanks for your help.

Jim Werner
jwwerner50@att.net

When searching for our Lyke family, I use Like, Lyke, Leick, Leyk & Leyck.. The church records in the 1700's spelled the name as Leick, leyk, Leyck. In 1804 the name Lyke is found in the church records for my family. For each member of my family below, there is a different spelling of the last name found in the church records, but the parents remain the same. I believe that the name was spelled by the Pastor of the church by what he heard not by what they told him to spell their name as.

Below is my family for the time period you are researching. Perhaps, the John that is born in 1796 is John Andrew. I know that my John K. Lyke, named his first born as Andrew.

The records below were found in the area of Copake and West Copake, Columbia County, for the first 4 children and the others were born in Churchtown, Columbia County

Descendants of David Lyke

1 David Lyke	1772 - 1848
+Arianje Harriett Wittbeck1768 - 1849
2 John Lyke	1796 -
2 Jacobus James Lyke	1798 -
+Deborah Ann Norry	1811 - 1895 *2nd Wife of Jacobus James Lyke: +Mary Lyke
2 Catharina Lyke	1800 -
+Jacob J.
Well the Andrew Lyke I am looking for was born in the early 1800s. He married a Maragret Friss. Do you have any information on any children that your Lyke's had in this time period? It is weird that Lyke is an uncommon name, but there seems to be family with the same name in the same area.
Also, did any of your lykes have different spellings on census for their last name?

This Lyke family supposedly came over around the Revolutionary war time.

Missy

I have some information for you, although it isn't much. Edward C. Lyke and Llewella Spence were married August 1, 1899. I have Lloyd Lyke's report card from 1908-1909. He went to school in District 2, Superior Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan. I also have a wedding announcement for Evelyn and Herman Salomonson's daughter, Barbara.

Edward's parents were Christopher and Theresa Lyke. Theresa's maiden name was Foote according to Edward's marriage record, but she was born in Germany and we think the name was changed to Foote when she came to America. Edward's brother, William, is my 2nd great-grandfather.

Christopher and Theresa Lyke and Evelyn Salomonson are buried in Superior Township at Frains Lake.

There are a lot of Lyke cousins in Michigan. Please e-mail me at ckurtz@alltel.net. I'll be glad to send you copies of what I have.

If you go to the white pages on the Internet, you'll find lots of Lykes in Michigan. Maybe you'll recognize some of the names?
Hi, I have been researching this link to my Lyke's and I have been looking for a connection, as yet have not found it. There were many entries with baptisms for them and it seems there were two families (generations) and I still do not have them figured out.
My ggrandfather was Samuel Asa Lyke, and connecting him to Rufus Lyke but need more confirmation. I recently rec'd info that there is a link there but to date, no luck. Maybe you have something that can help.
Thanks, Emma Peak Smith

Hi, Mert told me you were posted on here, I just have been taking too much time checking too many things out! I saw a response to your question before you asked! It was spelled Leick originally and they came and worked the pine forest and made pitch for the ships. There is more, but I did not copy it and by now you probably have it.
I am Emma L Peak Smith and Samuel Ora Asa was my ggrandfather.
Good luck on your quest.

Hi Joy; We have moved twice in three years and changed providers many times. Currently I am at mjhanna@cox.net.
To join the Lyke list. Send a email LYKE-L-request@rootsweb.com in the body of the email, not the subject line, put the word "subscribe". This should put you on line. Then send a email to LYKE-L@rootsweb.com with your request for information.

Tena

They had William Earl Lyke, Doris Isabelle Lyke, Margaret A. Lyke, Eloise Bessie Lyke and a son born in 1913. I don't have his name. Do these dates match up with your dates?

Abraham Lyke was also my ggg grandfather. He is said to have been born in Athens, NY, across the Hudson River from Hudson,NY.He was born there in 1791. He died in Dodge Co. MN in 1887. He apparently was married three times. He married Julia Scott in 1827. They seem to have had four children, James, Melvin, Lydia, and Hulda. Lydia married Arthur Joyner and is my gg grandmother. Abe apparently married a third time after Julia died in 1847. I believe his third wife's name was Mary. To of their children were Francis and Arthur.

f
