It is with sadness that I report the death of Jacquie Patterson Lynde on 15 Nov 2008 in Portland, OR. from Lewy Bodies Dementia. Many people have been genealogy friends of Jacquie's and have wondered about her. She was a wonderful genealogy friend and she has been missed by many.
Juanita Hurley

Hi aschafer and Lynde Randall.

I too am a direct descendant of Sevier Lynde and his wife Minerva Jaynes Lynde Gwinn. Of course, each one of the names are and have been spelled a variety of names.

Lynde, Do you know the children of Jonathan and his wife Polly Franklin Lynde? If not, do you know who is the Father and Mother of Sevier/Siever/Sever Alonzo Lynde, and have proof of that? He is an elusive guy, for sure! I have a new email address from the original one I had here way back in the 1990's. Please contact me at DiggerParsons@aol.com

Thank you so much for the info. Seiver A. Lynde is my direct line. I had been told that his parents were possibly Isaac Lynde & Lydia Adams, but am still looking for proof of that. Any further info anyone can provide to shatter my brick wall if it makes this connection or the right connection would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again.

Has anyone managed to track down the author's location yet. I am sure there are a few of us who would like a copy of the book if one is to be had...especially those of us who are directly related.

Nathaniel Smith md Lucy Lynde of Leicester/Malden, MA ...apparently removing to Guilford, NY. I'm at my wit's end trying to find the Smith Family in Guilford. 1790 Census of Guilford NY shows Nathanial Smith, along with his assumed wife
and 5 children, one of which is further assumed to Lucy Lynde Smith.

One of the five children was Polly "Mary" Smith who md Solomon Thompons of Hallowell, PEC, Ont., a couple miles west of Picton, Ontario, south of the "house" in question.

[Note #1]

I believe that I am also a Canadian Lynde descendant, living in St. Catharines, Ontario. I sent this note to Scott in quest of a signature for Benjamine Lynde... I may as well share it here...as we are all basically talking about the same lineage. If there is anyone among you that can assist me, please post here, but I would rather "talk" off-line...contact me at b1caez02 [at] cogeco.ca. I am a THOMPSON researcher, but it appears the my 6xgp's leap into the Lynde pool...

Scott: I would be happy to receive a copy of Benjamin Lynde's signature...and any information that you may have to assist me in my Lynde studies which I have been trying to get underway. I have included an outline of my line of study and my lineage below... My line stops and starts at the Lynde [6xgp's] connection, between #7 and #8...as you will note from my lineal information to follow...and at the bottom of this note... My issue, is the lack of a solid source document to support my hypothesis, that my Polly Smith is the d/o of Nathaniel Smith and Lucy Lunde/Lynde. I have been tentatively assured that this union is acceptable under the circumstances for D.A.R. and S.A.R. application purposes... i.e. "the preponderance of the evidence"

I look forward to hearing from any Lynde researcher that may be able to assist.

Best regards, Al Dempster

[go to note #2]
Donna, Does your info include the Lynde family from Boston, Massachusetts? Mary Lynde was born in 1680 and married John Valentine in 1702. John was "His Majesty's Advocate General for the Provinces of Massachusetts Bay, New Hampshire and the Colony of Rhode Island". I am trying to determine John's birth date, his age at the time of marriage or at his death in 1724.

Thank you for your immediate response. Those are the dates I have in my family chart (obtained from the LSD site), but I am unable to confirm John's birthdate or identify John's father. I understand that there is a Lynde family bible that may contain some information on Mary's husband John. This could offer an almost unimpeachable source if John's birthdate or parentage was mentioned. John's son Thomas is my ancestor and I am assured of the line from me to him.

There was another Lynde family in Massachusetts in the 17th century which I suspect is not related to the Deacon Thomas Lynde family of Malden (Melrose) Massachusetts. There was a Benjamin Lynde who was a jurist who was a loyalist and judge of sessions and pleas for the colony. Benjamin Lynde the senior sat as presiding judge over the so called "Boston Massacre" trial.
The law book could very well have belonged to this Lynde family.
D Hobson
a Canadian Lynde

Hi Donna,

I have been following the recent Lynde thread.
I have the book by Sybil Lynde and have had requests to get in touch with Sybil Lynde but no one seems to be able to find her now. Do you know Sybil's address?

I'm also a Deacon Thomas Lynde descendent, first name Lynde,
through my grandmother Annie [Lynde]Cross. (Canada)

Lynde (C.
If you go to rootsweb's "World Connect Project" and search out only those entries with citations, it will save you some time... Don't trust any "site's" records, bar none, without at least three confirmations. I was just dealing with an "impeccable" situation yesterday, that had two different birth dates for a particular person; I can only assume one as the birth date, and the other as the baptismal date...sounds logical.

re: 1772 Guilford, VT Census:

What's your "family chart" have for Daniel Lynde and Sarah Bemis over in Guilford, VT?

And since Lucy Lynde is Daniel's neice, who md Nathaniel Smith, and who is in Guilford also, for the census, do you have anything on them?

I am wondering if the book, To a house in Whitby: the Lynde family story, 1600 to 1900, happens to cover WOODRUFF, RAY, LAMOREAUX and PALMER famlies?

In this regard, does it have photographs of any of these families?

Thank you.

Dear Donna,
I'm sorry it took so long for me to reply. I have no recollection of your first posting to me, but here I am and below are 2 transcriptions of letters to my husband's grandfather during WWI. Gene Applegate was wounded at Belleau Wood and lots of friends rallied 'round through letters. I have some news articles I need to transcribe, so this is just the start. What is your connection to the Nebraska Lyndes?
Becky

Union July 4 – 18.
My Dear Gene, when I heard you were in the Hospital I went right-away & called up Grace to get your address, so I could write to you. Isure hope you are out & fighting again just as hard as you did before. I did not hear any particulars. But – am glad you could write to your mother and Gene what a great & grand thing for your mother to have all five of her boys in the service. I expect she is on her way now to see Paul. Well say I must tell you am having a grand good time with my Leuitenant[sic] Lynde. He is home on a 15 day furlough. Finished the course in the Officers Training Camp at Fort Munroe and made good & is now being sent to Galveston Texas. He thinks it fine to get a few days at home. And Durwood is Corporal at Camp Freemont Calif. The boys were both hoping that he would be sent to Calif & be so they could see one another. Clyde will go where Ray Bramblet is located so they may be together. Well old Union don’t change very much. Just do the same old stunts. The boys go down to Watson Mo. & get a lot of booze come back & drive their cars up & down the side walks on Main St. & that’s all that done about it (just the same talk). Now I guess only one Bunch drove on the walks But I saw that myself. Most all the boys are gone many enlisted & some drafted & Nebraska furnished 4000 in the July Draft. And that will take more. But let them go as long as we need them & we will sure soon have enough to whip -- --. Well we are all busy in Red Cross. Now days when we get over quota’s. Well we are working Mrs McNamus place this year & have nice prospects for corn [illegible} are light. & I guess the potatoes will be almost a failure here this year. Well I cant think of any more so I’ll close & write to us when you can.
Mrs. M. Lynde
Union Nebr.

Union, Neb.
August 29 – 1918
Dear friend Gene:
It has been some time since I have written you but guess you won’t mind it, will you?
We were all so sorry to hear you were wounded but trust you get along O.K. and I know you must be in good care.
We have sold our farm and bought a house in Nebraska City. It is between 17th & 18th St. on first ave. [sic] a grey stone house, maybe you know the place. We think it is very nice so when you are visting [sic] your N.C. friends, call on us, about meal time, if not any other.
Luty is in Washington D.C. but expects to be sent to Galveston Texas. Clyde Lynde is there. Durwood is going to an officers Training school in Camp Hancock Georgia. It is a machine gun school. He has only been there 2 weeks.
I guess Ino. Erinin [? illegible] goes to war from around here the last of the month. Ardon Rhuman expects to go about the 5th of next month. I expect the rest of the 21 year old will go about same time he does.
The Marines certainly has been doing splendid work, and you can’t imagine how proud we are of all our Union Boys.
Rev. Barnes from Nebraska City was here today. He is ready to be called at any minute for Y.M.C.A. duty. Dorothy wrote you some time ago but she sent it on to your old address.
Gene Roddy is in New Jersey Ino[?} Frans at Sandy Hook New Jersey and Bernard is still in Ireland. Union had the Old Settlers Picnic last Friday and Sat. It was the same old story only lots more dirt & dust. There seemed to be more strangers this year than usual and not any young boy to speak of. Then ones a person did see wondered why they happened to be there.
Ellis LaRue, Clifton Clark and Emmet Morton gave a dance the first night and Orvil McQuen gave one the last nite. I didn’t go to either one. Syracuse Band furnished music for old setters [sic] and Nebraska City orchestra for the dance.
I suppose you know Rich Smith is married. He and Nettie live just east of us on Jessie Todd’s place for the Present time. Jessie Todd has sold her land to Bert Everett.
Mama talked to Grace Applegate the other day. They are all real well, your Grandmother wants Mama to come over and see her.
Dorothy & Eula F. are down visting[sic] Grandpa Davis. They have a great time with Gweldyn[sic] , George Stites [sic] youngster.
Do you get to hear any music over there. Hope so as you always liked it.
Ida Reynolds is going back to Peru to school this next year. Margaret still works in Omaha. Guess she has a real good job.
Alta Taylor and Loy Pell seem to be as lively as ever, run around so much and the such. Saw Alta at the Picnic and guess that was the first time that I saw him all summer.
I hope you and Forest Frans happen to get in same hospital. It would certainly be luck if such a thing did happen.
I hope to hear you are O.K. by this time. Wishing you the very best of luck and courage. I know you have all the pluck that there is needed.
Hoping to hear from you some time in the near future.
Your schoolmate,
Elma M. Hall

Letters from Durwood Lynde (plus news items)

Plattsmouth Journal, Thursday, July 13, 1916
Plattsmouth, Cass County, Nebraska [Union township]
[Union Ledger] Durwood LYNDE and Palmer APPLEGATE, our National Guard boys, were home on pass over Sunday.
Clyde LYNDE and mother motored to Omaha Saturday where they met Mrs. Lynde’s sister, who was coming here for a visit.

Plattsmouth Journal, Thursday, August 31, 1916
AT THE BORDER BUT GREATLY DESIRES TO BE HERE
Letter from Durwood B. Lynde in Response to Invitation to Attend the Alumni Picnic
From the border where the soldiers of Uncle Sam are encamped comes a response to an invitation to be present at the alumni picnic and reunion at the high school grounds tomorrow, which is sent by Durwood B. Lynde of Union, a member of the class of 1911. In his letter Mr. Lynde says:
“Llano Grande, Tex., Aug. 23, 1916
To Alumni Committee, Plattsmouth, Neb.:
Just received the letter in regard to all the old graduates of the P.H.S. and thought I would tell you that although I would sure love to be there I do not see how I can.
I am down here on the border with Company B, Fifth Nebraska, from Nebraska City and don’t believe Uncle Sam is going to send us back very soon. Would certainly like to be there Friday, September 1st, and see all my old schoolmates, especially the class of 1911. I know they will have lots of fun talking over old times and I am taking this manner of sending my regards and also my regrets to them.
We are not having any picnic here, like hundreds of the fellows that were going to, as we drill five or six hours a day and have two hours a day on school of the soldier.
I happen to be one of the non-commissioned officers of our company, so don’t have to work quite so hard as the privates but have plenty, and always enough to work up an appetite for the bacon, prunes and [illegible] that we have to eat. The weather is lovely here, gets pretty hot from ten to four in the day time but mornings and evening the Gulf breeze that we get here is very cool – we always have to hunt our blankets before morning.
Our camp is thirty miles west of Brownsville and only four miles north of the Rio Grande river. I have been down to the river several times but the regular army cavalry that are indicated there on patrol duty would not allow us to cross over into Mexico, although I crossed into [looks like] Matamoros[fade] from Brownville last Sunday when a few of us fellows took a little trip.
There are about 15,000 troops here in this camp from Indiana, Minnesota, North Dakota and Nebraska. We are getting equipped as fast as they can get the stuff here but that is not very fast.
Anyone that says this country is prepared for war or speaks against preparedness please send them to me and I think I can convince them that this country certainly needs it.
We have been called out over two months now and haven’t half the stuff yet that we need to go into war if there should be one.
We haven’t the least idea how long we are to be here as the officers won’t tell us a thing and the government won’t order a pay day. Those are the main reasons there is so much discontent in camp. If they would tell us we were going to be here a year or three months or three years if that is what it is to be, we could arrange our business affairs at home and be much better satisfied than the way it is.
My three years will be up in April and if we are still here am sure coming back unless there is actual war going on, but don’t think there will be, especially if they let us start a while before is, as we are all positive we could clean the country in say six weeks if they would turn us loose.
Thanking the committee again for remembering me, I beg to remain,
Yours truly,
SERGEANT D.B. LYNDE, Co. B., 5th Nebraska

Plattsmouth Journal, Monday, June 18, 1917
[Union Ledger] A card received last week by Durwood LYNDE from his brother, Clyde, who joined the Coast Artillery some time ago, informed him that he is now in Honolulu. He tells many interesting things and seems to enjoy being in the service.

Plattsmouth Journal, Monday, February 11, 1918
OVER THE COUNTY
[Union Ledger] Derwood LYNDE is confined at his home with the measles. John IRWIN is carrying the mail for him while he is sick.

U .S A.
CAMP HANCOCK, GA.
Sunday, Nov. 10th 1918
Dear Friend Gene:
Just had letter from Elma and she sent me your letter. Did you ever get that letter I wrote you about a mo. ago.
Hope you are about alright by now. Gee but I would have liked to come across when the fighting was on, from all reports over here it looks like it was about over and don’t care much about coming across to police up cause it would be a year at least B-4 we’d ever get back and maybe longer and I want to get married pretty soon and don’t want to leave her that long for some one else might be there when I’m gone See.
School closed yesterday and I’m a jawbone shave tail. We’re to be commissioned Wed. wrote to Paul up at Gordon but he hasn’t answered yet. Hope to see him when I get sent away from here as we’ll have to go thru Atlanta to get away from here.
Don’t know yet where I’m to be sent, asked for Camp Dodge Iowa & Camp Kearney or Fremont Calif as 2nd choice but don’t know whether Ill get there or not. Reason I asked for Dodge Iowa was on acct of being near to home not that Im[sic] crazy about camp. Cant write you any more news cause don’t know any.
Sure hate this camp and hope they sent me to Hell & gone on other side of Mason Dixon line.
Clyde is over there think he’s at Brest France, Battery 75th Artillery C.A.C. Guess you knew he was a Lt.
Havent heard from Parm for long time don’t know his address since he left Deming I saw him when I came thru Deming on road down here.
Well be good old scout and get well soon as you can.
Your old Friend,
Lt. DB Lynde
14th Co. O.T.S. Now don’t know where Ill be in a week.
