Nearly 300 family trees show William Lyon (1698 - 1802) as descending from John Lyon, 4th Earl of Glamis, Scotland. However, after research in Glamis, there is no child of John and Elizabeth Standhope by the name William. There is a William Lyon, banished to Virginia in 1716 after being captured at the Battle of Preston in 1715. The problem I have is there is no way of finding the truth about William Lyon. Can anyone help me with William Lyon's parentage?
