I am a descendant of a William Lyon who came from Scotland to New Zealand around 1860's, on his death certificate he stated his parents names as William Lyon and Isabella Black, and that he was born in ParkLease(very hard to read). I think he may have been a brother to a James Lyon as well who also came to NZ.
Lyon Family of Bainbridge Chenango County NY

Received this information because of my interest in this town. Will post this in several messages as it is quite long. No Relation. Cannot answer any questions.

History and a few events of the Four Lyon Brothers by M. E. Lyon

Many years ago, so the story goes, two brothers came from England and settled in Rhode Island. From a descendant of one of these brothers, Underhill Lyon of Byron Shore, CT, came the Lyons of this vicinity. Not much is known of them however till the time of Israel and Moses Lyon of Bedford, NY.

Moses Lyon was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He was taken prisoner, it is said, and confined in a sugar house in New York City all of one winter where he suffered so intensely that he declared that while he might be killed in battle, taken prisoner NEVER. He lived for a time in Kortright, NY where he was burned out. He often visited his relatives in Bainbridge but it is believed that he spent his last days in Kortight. Eli Lyon of Bainbridge is the only living descendant of Moses Lyon now known.

Israel, a brother of Moses Lyon, was the father of william, Samuel, Daniel, Charles, Clara, Betsey, Caleb, Abijah, Jared and Alvah. The youngest son Alvah remained with his father on the old homestead in Bedford. He left three daughters. Jared settled in Illinois. Abijah lived for a time in New York City but after the death of his wife he with a large family of children moved to Illinois. Betsey married a man by the name of Miller and settled in western part of New York. Clara married Harry Seeley and lived for a number of years on what is now known as the Dr. Evans place one and one-half miles west of Bainbridge on the old State road. Later they moved to a farm one and one-half miles above Bainbridge on the west side of the river Susquehanna. After the death of her husband, she with several of her children, went west where her brothers, Abijah and Jared lived. Caleb was blind and spent the greater part of his life in New York City. He left two sons.

In 1803 Israel Lyon came to Bainbridge, then Jericho, to find homes for three of his sons; William, Samuel and Daniel. A farm situated on the hill east of Kelsey Creek and about three miles from Jericho village was purchased. Here William made his home. There were two houses on this place. Samuel located on fifty acres south of that on which William lived. Both of these brothers were married before comin to Jericho. Daniel settled on fifty-seven acres near the creek, and when Charles came in 1905 he also settled near the creek. The four farms now contained about two hundred and sixty acres of land. Charles lived for some time with Samuel working one day each week to pay for his board.

Samuel and Daniel were carpenters by trade and the Briggs Lyon barn as well as the other buildings now standing, speak of their good work. More land was secured. Samuel buying eighty acres near the creek and Daniel getting land of the government on half mile south of his first home. While William and Charles added on to what they already had.

When Israel Lyon died three men were chosen to settle the estate, the heirs binding themselves to abide by the decision of the three. The old home in Bedford was sold. William was given a good title to the one hundred and twenty-five acres on which he lived, which had been denied him up to this time. Charles received one hundred acres of land west of Kelsey Creek that had been obtained in exchange for a horse. Daniel and Samuel received money for their portion. The four brothers now held in their possession something over six hundred acres of land.

The old home in Bedford was not forgotten, there was the peach orchard, the lot before the door, of the tilled land, the ox pasture through which a stream ran, and this lot was bounded on two sides by woodland, then there was the hill pasture. Much to was said of old Tough, a horse that was a general favorite, he was great in a race though he was never entered as a race horse. One morning he was fed four times by different members of the family, each feeling that he deserved something a little extra.

Of the mother, it is related that, once when a team with a heavy load was driven off the creek bridge and the driver lay under a wheel of the overturned vehicle, instead of waiting to get men to help as was suggested by other women, she demanded that they take hold and help her lift the wheel and take the injured man out. We do not know that she ever came to Bainbridge but it seems almost certain that the same brave spirit and great physical strength, that she showed were exhibited by her descendants in this their new locality.

Lyon(s) DNA for Henry Lyon (Scotland-New Jersey)

My ancestor George E. Lyon was born in NJ between 1804 and 1811. I have not been able to find his parents. I am looking for a proven male descendant of Henry Lyon who was born in the 1600s in Scotland or England and settled in New Jersey.

I am searching for anything to do with Vincenzo Aliberti - who was born in Italy about 1847 and married a Dutch lady called Marianne Cohen (born about 1870). They then went to London, England and had 3 children (of which I know - Alice Elizabeth Aliberti (my Grandmother), Victoria Maria Aliberti & John Alfonso Joseph Aliberti).

Vincenzo was a Master Confectioner / Master Fruitier. Was he married before in Italy ? Where did he come from in Italy ? Where did he meet Marianne Cohen ? Did they marry in England ? I would love to find any relatives!

Many thanks

Melissa

Which Peter Lyon married Bettie/Elizabeth Norville?

Hello,
I am researching Peter Lyon, born ca 1746 of Amherst and Albemarle County, VA. Peter's father John Lyon, along with Peter, and several of John's other children moved to Caswell County, NC in 1782. Peter Lyon later moved to Sumner County, TN ca 1796 and ended up in Maury County, TN, where he died ca 1822. This Peter Lyon married Bettie Norville in 1771 in Goochland County, VA, but other Lyon Researchers claim that a different Peter Lyon, born ca 1750, who died in Nelson County, VA ca 1820, was the one who married Bettie Norville. Will be glad to dicuss this topic with persons researching these 2 Peter Lyons.

Dixon Lyon and Rebecca Jones

I have reason to believe that they are my great-grandparents. I found them in Winston County, Miss in 1838. Their marriage license names them and Dixon Lyon and Rebecca Jones. Hezikiah Burnell's name was on the licence as bond. They were still in Winston County in 1850 Census. They had three children, Francis, Mary and Nancy, Major. They showed up in Winn parish, La. in 1860 census as Dixon Eubanks, wife Rebecca, Children, Francis, Mary, Nancy, Major, Louisiana, John, and James. If you have any info on any of these people, please contact me. Thanks, Dixie

Hi,

I'm looking for any information regarding Mary Lyon, who I believe was raised in Spring Valley, Westchester Co. New York. My unsourced family history says nothing more than "from Spring Valley".

In 1842 (Feb. 2) she married John Gesner WILLSEY (also spelled WILSEY, WILSIE, WILTSEE, WILTSE), but I don't know where.

Mary was still alive and living with her daughter, Ada WILLSEY in 1900 in Orangetown, Rockland Co.

Does anyone know anything about this Mary? I'm particularly interested in her parents and date of death.

Many thanks!

I am trying to find the names of the children (desendants) of Richard Lyon and Martha Flint. I know for a fact they had 2 daughters Tryphina/Josephina and Phoebe...but that is about the only thing I know about the family. Tryphina/Josephina (we are trying to find out her correct name) married Eli Roate (a Civil War solider with the 10th Regiment New York Artillary Unit); Phoebe marrie Daniel Reed/Reid (also Civil War solider with the same unit as Eli). Daniel and Tryphina/Josephina died in WI and Eli and Phoebe then married).

Cynthia Lyon

I am looking for some information on my third great grandmother yet. She was born per data from the Lampman family bible in 1813 in Swanton,VT area. She married Peter S. Lampman about 1829/1830 in the Swanton, VT area per same record. No marriage, birth etc. records exist. This family is mentioned in the Clinton Co., NY history books as being in that county by 1835-1837 where some of the children were born.
I have searched the 1820 & 1830 census for the Swanton, VT areas and find in the 1820 census an Abel and a Luther Lyon who had daughters ages under 10 years old. Someone several years wrote me about a Cynthia Lyon of a Lyons who was born about 1815 but was not the correct person, as she died young in her twenties I think. Does anyone have any data on this Cynthia Lyon, who her parents may be, etc. Would appreciate any help on this 10 year old brick wall.
Thanks Greg Lampman

I believe Elisha Lyon had several sons, two of which were name Peter and Daniel. I am interested to find out if these two sons went to the Mississippi Territory.

First record I have is the marriage for Daniel Lyon and Frances Price in Claiborne Co., MS in 1808. They are my ancestors. MS was not officially a US state until 1812, but some records were kept...including the Spanish census records.

Spanish Census 1810 (Claiborne Co., MS): Peter Lyon
Spanish Census 1816 (Claiborne Co., MS): Peter Lyon and Daniel Lyon

1820 MS census (Claiborne Co., MS): Peter and Daniel Lyon

1830 MS census for Claiborne Co., MS only listsnames of two women: Margaret Lyon and Frances Lyon, heads of two different households. I know that Frances was the widow of Daniel....and although I have no proof, Margaret is possibly widow of Peter.

Can anyone help me? Thanks,
Doris
Richard Lyon of Fairfield County, Connecticut

Union Cemetery, Sport Hill Rd., Easton, CT. While tracing Richard in Fairfield County, I walked thru 2 cemeteries situated on Sport Hill Rd. in Easton, CT; Union Cemetery and a smaller one northerly up the road which would have been on a family farm. Situated on the south easterly part of Redding on the Easton line lies a place locally known as Lyons Hollow. This being the fact that there were several of Richard's family, sons, and g.child. I have a copy of Richard 1's death recorded at the Redding church he attended. Perhaps an amusing anecdote to those unaware. At this early time period, land in Easton and Weston(where I ventured) were sold in long lots. Which meant long lengths and short widths. I was told by a local historian this was due to the fact that the cattle could not turn around with the plows.
Was there ever any Revolutionary battles that took place on CT soil? Yes! Occured in Danbury and Ridgefield respectively. They were after the ammuntion supply in Danbury. To make this story short, I attended a lecture given by local historian on this. Email me if you'd like to learn about this and how it affected your ancestors here.

Cyrus Lyon b. 1819 in NY

I need some help concerning this Cyrus Lyon. I had posted this on the genforum.geneology website and haven't got any response yet. So, I am hoping someone on this site will help me sort out this confusion.

I am getting cofused about who his parents are. To start with my G-G-Grandmother, Sarah Ann Cozine, had married a James Whitley, who is the family line I am searching on, but before marrying James, she apparently married twice before, Cyrus Lyon and Talton (or Tarlton) Blevin(s).

Her first marriage appears to be with Cyrus Lyon. Cyrus Lyon b. abt 1820 and from NY age 40 and Sarah A. Lyon (a Cozine) b. abt 1833 age 27 and from KY, according to the 1860 US Census, living in Hurricane TP, Carroll Co, MO. They have children George Lyon age 5 (1855,MO) and Sarah A. age 2 (1858,MO). There is a Mary A. Cozine who is living with them, who is a niece of Sarah A.(Cozine)-Lyon from her brother, William Cozine (also was living in Missouri in 1850 near her at that time, then moved to California in 1860 leaving her daughter Mary A. Cozine with Sarah).

According to Carroll Co, Missouri, Marriage Records, 1833-1856 a Liras Lions (mispelled for Cyrus Lyon) married Sarah Ann Cozine on 23 Mar 1854 by Officiator: Alford S. Cooper.(this can be found on Ancestry.com)

Now for the confusing part. Ancestry.com - source Family Data Collection - Individual Records indicates Cyrus Lyon Death Date to be 21 Jul 1864. BUT, Cyrus Lyon shows up on the US Census 1860 through 1880 living in Iowa.

On 1860 US Census the date of enumeration is July 2; Cyrus is age 40, a school teacher and living in Sugar Creek TP, Cedar Co, IA with the Weed's family. The enumeration date for the Cyrus in Missouri is Nov 22, 1860. Which makes it possible Cyrus may have been picked up in both places, if these two are the same person.

On 1850 US Census, Cyrus is shown living in District 15, Carroll Co, Missouri age 31(1819) from NY and living with his parents: Alexander (1797 of RI) & Nancy A. Lyon (b. abt 1791 of CT and I am to believe her maiden name is PORTER). They live not to far from the Cozine family who also lived in District 15, Carroll Co, Missouri showing Sally (Sarah) A. Corner (mispelled, should have been Cozine, at age 17 (1833 of KY) living with her parents George & Charity Cozine (both from KY). So, this makes it possible for this Cyrus Lyon, who was living with his parents in 1850, married Sarah A. Cozine on 23 Mar 1854, in Missouri.

So, did this Cyrus leave Sarah A. (Cozine) and moved to Iowa? Or did he go join the Civil War and left Sarah After his discharge for service, which was in Iowa? Is this Cyrus Lyon two different people? Did I confuse you all too? LOL

Seriously, if there is anyone with this knowledge, let me know. Thanks.

My grandfather, Leigh Lyon(s), ABT: 1900-1960? Has Native American ancestry, possibly Lakota Sioux? Married Sara Jane O'Brien Ertmer. Lived in Stocton IL. They had six daughters: Genevieve, Mildred, Evelyn,(my mother), Jane, Josephine, and Donna. I got this info in bits and pieces, so there could be errors. Looking for more info on this family and the Native American connection. I'm new at this, so please disregard any mistakes.

I am trying to trace my Lyon ancestor. The last thing I know is that he was born in England in 1621, that he moved to New York City in 1660, then he died in New York in 1671. He had a son named Thomas Lyon. I don't know his wife's name.

If you have any information please contact me.
Kathryn

Oil: Lyon's Folly Kentucky

I have some interest in early oil production by LYON/LYONS in Kentucky.

My g-g-grandfather, Hamilton Lyon moved from Cincinnati OH to the Paintsville area in Johnson Co. KY to drill for oil in 1860. There is evidence he had some success, but there is also family lore that indicates he wasn't so successful.

His granddaughter, Elizabeth Prowse, wrote, "In after years machinery strewn along the Big Sandy was referred to as 'Lyon's Folly'. Hamilton died a poor man and is buried near Paintsville, Kentucky. Many of his descendants live in Salyersville and Paintsville."

In 1865 Hamilton gave a report on oil production. He wrote, "Of the ‘Spradlin Well,’ on ‘Little Mud Lick,’ the property of the Cliff Spring Co.,’ which I am superintending, I am unable to give you anything like a definite record. The first 300 feet were bored before the war, and records lost. I doubt very much if one could be got, from the fact that the gas has always carried the borings off. At 330, however, I am satisfied I struck the first Limestone; and at 341 a stratum of Shale, similar to that struck by Brown at 346. This was succeeded by Limestone, which has continued to where I am at present, 410."

In 1898 John James McLaurin wrote, "At the mouth of the [Oil-Spring] Fork, in 1860, Lyon & Co. drilled a well two-hundred feet, tapping three veins of heavy oil and retiring from the scene when “the late unpleasantness " began to shake up the country.…What an innumerable array of nice calculations this cruel war nipped in the bud!" (John James McLaurin Sketches in Crude Oil: Some Accidents and Incidents of the Petroleum Development in All Parts of the Globe Page 49-50 Published 1898 by the author)

I wonder if anyone has a connection to early oil production in eastern KY, and the Paintsville/Johnson Co. area in particular and could shed some light on the subject, or help identifying some of the places. I am especially interested if anyone has heard of "Lyon's Folly". And, of course, I'm interested in making connections with other LYONs in the area. While the family name is LYON, some branches of it in that area have become LYONS. I have seen Hamilton's brother, Southwell, listed as "South Lions" in census records!
