Monica,

My husband's grandfather was Joseph Lysack, the older brother of Thomas, also the son of Joseph and Mary Lysack (Lisacek). Joseph married a Julia Hudek, also of Shamokin had two children - Lorraine (my late mother in law) and Eugene. We know very little of the Lysack side of the family other than "Aunt Mary" was still alive up in Philadelphia as of 3 years ago. Aunt Mary being the younger sister of Joseph and Thomas. Please contact me directly at pflahertolm@aol.com

Patricia Olmedo
The original spelling of "Lysak"

The first letter of our last name has a short dash accross it. In Polish this letter is pronounced the same way as the letter "w" in English.

It is a stand-alone name, NOT a shortened version of Lysakowski.

Although my family has Polish roots as far as I can trace it back I believe the name is of Ukrainian descent.

The root of our last name is the word "lysy" which means "bald" in Polish.

All the best to all the Lysak's out there!
Your very distant relative, Piotr

All you Lysak s, Lysakowski s, L~ysakowski s..Go to 'Rymut'
's "Surnames in Poland"/ Nazwisk w Polska through PGSA.org or via "chuck shultz...favorites" and see the 1990
distribution of surnames in Poland, by the old 49 provinces/
wojwodzwu. Use wildcard * as in , *ysakowsk* to get variation
in spelling; L vs L~, i.e. L with a cross/kristka thru it giving it
a "W" sound vs the "L" sound...in Polish !!!! "Powodzenia!"

Re: Lysak

Is it possible that your name was shortened from Lysakowski when your family came to the USA? If so, there are a lot of Lysakowski families from Warsaw and Bialawieza and elsewhere in Poland.

Lysak is an easy way to shorten Lysakowski. My father did it for a short period of time when he emigrated to the USA and then changed it back to the full name after a couple of years.

Let me know if you think this is worth following up on.

Thank you.

Rich

I did some research for you. I found a Leonard L. Lysak who was married to Mary L. Walton. Leonard's father was Antoni "Anthony" Lysak, born 1891 in Piwniczna, Austria. Leonard had 2 brothers, Eugene (born 6/11/1943)and Lawrence (born 1951), and he also had 2 sisters, but I wasn't able to find out anything about the sisters. I hope this information helps you.

My grandmother was Helen Rose Lysak. Her father, born in Poland (Austria Hungary) according to his citizenship papers, was married to Mary (born around 1886). Helen had a sister Ethel, a brother Ben, and another brother Raymond. In 1922, they lived in Slovan, PA. I don't know if there is any relationship, but this may help.

Lysak

My name is Tammy Lysak. My fathers name is Leonard Lysak and my Mothers name is Sharon. My grandfathers name is also Leonard and his wifes name is Mary (Walton). My father is now deceased and he is survived by many other siblings of whom I do not know their names. I myself have four brothers; Roger, Lonny, Shawn, Eugene and three sisters; Shelly, Laura, and Sharon. I dont know much about my family other than we have polish roots. To my knowledge, most of my family is currently from Pennsylvania. I do know that my name was not originally Lysak, but some other variation of it. No one in my family, the ones that I know anyway, have any inclination as to what it may have been prior to its change. If you have any information please contact me.
