David,

Let's review the facts.

According to the census records Reuben was from North Carolina. According to his wife's War of 1812 pension claim he served in a unit that was formed in Germantown, North Carolina which at one time was the county seat for Stokes County.

In the 1800, 1810, 1820 census records there are no Mabe, Mayab, Mabb, or any other variations of the Mabe name in the North Carolina censuses except in Stokes County.

According to the pension record for William Mabe (1813-1896), a possible son of Reuben, his family moved to Tennessee in about 1822. His census records say he was born in North Carolina. Reuben Mabe shows up in the Tennessee census in 1830 for the first time.

A Reuben Mabe is listed as a son in Reuben Mabe's will which was written in 1853 and probated in 1856 in Stokes County.

David Mabe shows up in the census records for the first and only time in 1850 living in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He is from North Carolina.

My question is this. Based on this information how can you be so convinced that David and Reuben are brothers, or Reuben is not from Stokes County, North Carolina?

Jim Mabe

This is a tough issue. I may be wrong, but the documentation about the Mabe line seems to be inadequate to determine the genealogy of th Mabes. My interest is in Reuben Mabe of Hawkins County in the 1800s. I am not sure that he is directly related to the Mabes of Stokes County, NC, although I am convinced that he was the brother of David Mabe of Hawkins Count before 1860.

David,

Nice hearing from you.

I have no contact with anyone that is part of a Mabe DNA study. I, for one, can not be part of such a study. My grandfather's father was not Samuel Mabe, but a man whose last name was Douglas. This information came to me from my father by way of my mother.

If I didn't have that piece of information I could incorrectly give false DNA information because on all known records, such as the 1870 and 1880 census, Samuel's pensions, I am a descendant of Samuel Mabe.

Jim

James Dixon Mabe, Walnut Cove, NC -- obit.

WALNUT COVE - Mr. James Dixon Mabe, Sr., 86, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 11, 2009, following a courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was born October 13, 1922, to Gid and Gussie Mabe in the Dillard Community of Stokes County. He graduated from Pine Hall High School then served in Burma with the United States Army during World War II. Dixon married Beulah on November 7, 1947, then he worked various jobs, including delivery person for Kleen-Rite Cleaners in Walnut Cove, before going to work for RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company at their newly opened Brook Cove Plant in 1959. He was a long-time member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Dillard, serving as a deacon, Sunday School superintendent, and several other positions. He was an adopted member of First Baptist Church of Walnut Cove. He loved music, especially southern Gospel and bluegrass. He played his guitar with his brother, Lindy, and friends until a broken wrist put an end to this in the 1980's. If smiles were a communicable disease then he was a "carrier" and a definite "people person" even after Alzheimer's started taking his memory away. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lindy Mabe. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Beulah Mabe Mabe; four children and their spouses, Barbara and Tom Sanders of Durham, Wanda and Bill Whitaker of Walnut Cove, Jim and Susan Mabe of Winston-Salem, and David and Teresa Mabe of Walnut Cove; seven grandchildren, Robbie (Andrea) Sanders of Charlotte, Will (Lisa) Whitaker of Durham, Jason (Kristen) Whitaker of Mocksville, Rebecca Williams of the United States Army, Ronnie (Mandy) Sanders of Creedmoor, Whitney Mabe and Shelby Mabe both of Walnut Cove; five great-grandchildren, Jordan, LeeElla and Emily Williams of Houston, TX, Savanna and Evan Sanders of Charlotte; sister, Betty Lou (Grady) Mabe of Madison; brother, Edison (Elaine) Mabe of Germanton; and foster brother, Ray (Bonnie) Rhodes of Madison. A funeral service will be held Friday, August 14, 2009, at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

David,

I was just responding to your statement in the previous posting that there were no documents that suggested that the Hawkins County Reuben Mabe was not from Stokes County, North Carolina. That is why I pointed you to the 1812 pension applications filed by Abner Mabe and Polly Mabe, the widow of the Hawkins County Reuben Mabe and the similarity of the names of their respective commanding officers. I am glad that you think, as I do, that the Hawkins County Reuben Mabe came from Stokes County.

Abner Mabe is the son of the senior Stokes County Reuben Mabe. He is listed as such in Reuben's 1853 will that was probated in 1856. I'm sorry that you misunderstood and thought that I thought that the Hawkins County Reuben Mabe was his father.

The reason I pointed you to the article that I wrote about the possible father of the Hawkins County Reuben Mabe is so you could and anyone else could see what facts have been gathered from the census records, pension records, will records, and court records that could help in the search of the identity of his father.

There is no direct evidence, such as a census record, death record, birth record and such that proves his father's identity, but I think there is strong circumstatial evidence that points toward the Stokes County Rebuen Mabe as his father. At least that's the conclusion I arrived at after studying the known facts.

Other than the War of 1812 pension applications, I think the key pieces of facts are 1) Reuben Mabe Sr's 1853 will that lists a son named Reuben, 2) the overall 1850 census records for anyone named Reuben Mabe, and 3) the 1820 Stokes County census record for Reuben Mabe Sr.

Since his son Reuben was alive in 1853 he should be listed somewhere in the 1850 census records or prior to 1850. The 1820 census record for Reuben Mabe Sr indicates that at least one other family was living in his household.

David, I think you mistyped some of the dates in your post.

I will look into William's and his father's census records and see how they fall out. Since William did not appear in the census records until 1830 I think William stayed at his father's house until after his father's death. Most of Robert's children married late in life.

The Hawkins County David Mabe listed in 1850 census will always have to be included in any analysis of the Hawkins and Hancock County, Tennessee Mabes. But piece by piece things might be falling together on some of his family. Did you see the pension application of Margaret Mabe Smith Ferrell that Ronnie Ferrell posted? I think she might be connected to this David Mabe. There is also a Lawson connection.

I agree with you that the DNA tests are needed to prove his hertiage.

Jim

Jim,

There are actually several different issues here. I personally think that Reuben Mabe from Hawkins County was a Mabe from Stokes County, NC, but I don't think there is any evidence that he was the Reuben Mabe of Reuben Mabe Sr. He can't be John Mabe Sr's son because Reuben Mabe Sr said in an affidavit that Lucy Helton and John Sr were married in Rockingham County in 1880 or 1885. Roda Mabe said that they were married in 1891 and their first three children were Anna and Alexander, and Nancy Mabe, spanning the birth of the Hawkins County Reuben Mabe. Also, you have to explan David Mabe who lived in Stokes County until after 1840. He lived next to William Mabe. Reuben Mabe named some of his children Alexander Mabe, William Mabe (b. about 1770), and David Mabe. So, it seems like Reuben Mabe may be an unknown son of William Mabe.

There is no evidence that Abner Mabe was a son of the Hawkins County Reuben Mabe as far as I know--unless you have a document that states that. In fact, he is usually listed as a brother of Hawkins County Reuben Mabe. Now, we know that Alexander Mabe was born in NC about 1817 and that Reuben was his father--court debt document-- so Reuben was there at that time. There were several Reuben Mabes in NC including Stokes. In fact, if you read the John Mabe document,s then Reuben of Hawkins County was not his son. Mary Mabe was the daughter of Hennis Lawson, and she had numerous children out of wedlock. Her statement of being married isn't supported by any data. Until we get some DNA data, I am not sure tha any were actually Reuben's children.

David,

I will disagree with your statement that there are no documents that Reuben is from Stokes County, North Carolina. There are two documents that taken together would prove that he is from there. The first is the War of 1812 pension application of Abner Mabe, a proven Stokes County resident whose father is Reuben Mabe. The second is the aforementioned War of 1812 pension application that Reuben's widow, Polly, filed after his death. Both documents stated that they served with a North Carolina militia unit under the command of Jerry or Barry Cloud. The Barry Cloud was mentioned in Polly's application. This name was based on Polly's best recollection of Reuben's commanding officer's name. The name similarities are unmistakeable proof that they served in the same unit.

I also compiled a report named 'Who is the Hawkins County, Tennessee Reuben Mabe father?' It is located at: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/m/a/b/James-E-Mab...

I hope you would read it and offer your valued opinion on it.

Jim

We know from records of William Mabe that William was the son of Reuben. What I was saying however, is that the NC genealogy of Reuben Mabe appears to be speculation. There does not appear to be any records proving that he was from Stokes County other than that the name Reuben appears in Stokes County Mabe/Maib families. As far as I can tell, the Hawkins County Reuben is not mentioned in Stokes County records. If you know of any let me know.

Gwyn, I have been researching the Mabe line for quite a while andhave run into a lot of different spellings that you don't have in your query. They are, Maib, Maaybe, Maybe and others. My mother was a Mabe and I have quite a collection about the Mabe family. My research goes back to 1669 in England when William Mabe was convicted of burgerly and sent to the colines for a 7 year indnture. After his endinture he was granted 204 acres of land in Va. Most of my reserch has descended from him. Hope to hear from you.
SOrry, what I have is straight from Jim Mabe's wonderful website on the Mabe, I have not done any original research myself. The citation I have is "John D m Marie E Fightmaster, 8 Jan 1874, Clay Co, MO (Morris/MHixson)but neglected to write down where I got it." However, Jim has put John son of Morris as a John Wesley Mabe married to Cornelia, so there needs to be some original record tracking to be done to clarify who's who.

I have spent the entire day combing the Internet and my files for this family, and have found very little. Would you please add to the knowledge here to help in further research? I am very intrigued that this Mabe family appears to be out of Ireland, and not related to the well-researched William & Elizabeth Mabe family. I am also frustrated in that that I am almost sure that I had Archie Mabe's obit, but now cannot find it. I will keep looking.

1900 Census, KS, Wyandotte County, Kansas City, Ward 1
Mabe, John D. head, white male, March 1853, 47 MO, At Sea-Ireland, RR laborer
Cornelia L., wife, white female, May 1858, 45, MO, KY-MO
William E., son, white male, Jan 1891, 9, MO
Frederick, son white male, Aug 1875, 24, MO
John D., son, white male, July 1877, 22, MO, RR laborer
Annie E., daughter, white female, March 1882, 18, IA

1910 Census, KS, Wyandotte County, Kansas City
Mabe, John, head, white male, 22, married, MO, MO-MO, RR laborer
Katie, wife, white female, 20, married, MO, MO-KY
Archie, son, white male, 0, single, KS, MO-MO

1930 Census, KS, Wyandotte, Kansas City
Mabe, John D., head, white male, 52, married 31, c1878 MO, US-US, meat packing Co. laborer
Kate, wife, white female, 39, married 18, c1891 MO, KY-KY
Archie.
I think that my mother might have been one of the children from one of John Daniel Mabe III's 3 marriages. Do you have any info on any of his wives? My biological grandmother's maiden name was Elizabeth Jane Reed (could be Reid)I remember my mother telling me that she had 2 other sisters from her mom and supposedly JDMabe. They were, however, separated when they were adopted out. This can't be a coincidence.

This is insane. I am making some connections, finally... When my mother was born, the name she was given was Samyra...I can't believe this is a coincidence and the John Daniel Mabe III that you listed had a mother named Samyra. I am judging that it is a family name. However, I haven't seen it before now. This is getting me very interested. I also know that my mother's people were Irish.

I just found out that Norma passed away about 3 years ago. My family doesn't tell me anything. However, my grandmother might talk to you (or at least tell you some of the truth)where she might not talk to anyone else. I would be willing to give you her phone number and address if you would like to try and contact her. You can call me if you want as well, my number is 252-619-8689. This is my cell number and I am aware of the time difference, so don't worry about what time you call.

I also found out that my mother was born on my grandmother's 18th birthday. This would have made my grandmother's birth year 1928 so I am now almost completely certain that the records you found are the correct ones. I am going to find out today the names of my great grandmother and great grandfather.

I am certain that my mother didn't marry Archie, because I know (this sounds terrible) all of my mother's husbands.

This has always been our issue. My mother's name was changed after she was adopted and I am sure that her 2 sisters probably were, too. That is why there has been such a challenge to find them.

oh, also, and I almost forot this, my grandmother's sister was the first to marry him, if we are talking about the same man. Her maiden name would be Nora Reed or Reid, I am unsure how it is spelled but I think it is Reed and she still lives in Kansas, I believe in the KC area. She might be a little more forth right and truthful than my grandmother is. She may be a key to learning more about him. Because my grandmother told my mother that JD Mabe that she was married to died of an aneurysm. However, she has lied about so many other things, I am unsure if she was telling the truth. Also, she made the statement that he wasn't a very nice person,(not in those words) and said that he had a habit of getting himself into trouble, which made me wonder if we are talking about the same man. I don't like mysteries unless I can solve them. I am hoping you are the link I have been looking for.

Actually I live in North Carolina. My mother may not be able to be found because she was formally adopted at the age of 16 so I am sure all of that was sealed, howeve, maybe if we could find a link between JD Mabe III and my grandmother it might lead to something.

If what you are saying is correct and we are, indeed talking about the same person, JDMabe III's first wife would have been Norma () Reed (not sure about her middle name), they did, indeed have 3 children all of whom were adopted out.

Next would have come my grandmother Elizabeth Jane Reed, who did indeed, have 3 chilren (all girls) Samyra Paula (Sammy for short this was my mother before adoption), Kathy Marie, and Cynthia Sue. (could have been Kathy Sue and Cynthia Marie)

This is amazing to me. My mother, passed away in 2002. I made a promise to her on her death bed to find her sisters, I can't tell you how much you have helped me. I have connected with a family member I didn't know I had. Not only did my mother have 2 sisters, she had more siblings as well. I vowed to find at least Kathy and Cynthia for her, my worst fears are that they have passed on, but if they are still living, I want to find them and tell them what a wonderful person she was. If you find any more information, please keep me posted.

Wow. I am so excited to see other people with info about my family. MStaylor: Where & what info do you have on John D Mabe III B: abt. 1913. I have info on JD Mabe Jr & Sr, but haven't been able to find much info abt. JD Mabe III. JD III is my grandfather's father. My Grandfather was raised by George J. Mabe, his uncle. His father, JD Mabe III was not a nice person and was actually murdered sometime after 1959. I read your info about 100 times yesterday, but I have some conflicts.

To make it easy, I will refer to John Daniel as JD, either I, II, or III.

JD Mabe I,B:March 1853, married to Cornelia, had the following children according to my records: William E, Frederick, JD II, Annie, George J.(this is the one I mentioned above). However George J.'s mother, I am told was Maria Fightmaster. So not all of the above children have the same mother.

JD Mabe II,B:July 1877, married to Kate Tarwater, had the following children: Archie, JD III, Mary.

JD Mabe III,B: abt.1913, was married 3 times with 3 children with each wife. I know for a fact that 1 wife was Mildred Cunningham. JD III & Mildred had Robert D., B:10/1/1933, D:8/12/1980. Robert D. is my grandfather. The other children of JD III are Rebecca (Gonzalez), Luther (died at 3 yrs old), Ricky. Ricky's wife, Joyce is still alive and done some research, thats who I have gotten alot of info from.

What confused me is you indicated that Archie was JD III's father. My records indicate they were brothers.

Now I am trying to figure out if JD I was son of Morris Maib. Here is the discrepency:

1900 census: John DANIEL Mabe B: March 1853

Jim Mabe's Website: John WESLEY Maib B:December 1853. None of the children according to the extensive research Jim Mabe has done matches the 1900 census.

I will throw a monkey wrench at you, according to Joyce, the only one in my family who has done any research at all, before George J. passed away in 1984, he indicated he had a brother named Charlie. There is a son of JW Maib named Charles. Not sure if this is the same person.

So where do we go from here? I can fill you in on the remainder of my family from my grandfather, Robert D. if you like, all the way to my children.

Now we're getting somewhere. 1900 Census- the John D.(Daniel) Mabe who is HOH is my grt-grt grandfather. His son, also named John Daniel Mabe is my grt grandfather. Our family was close to John's brother George J, but unfortuneately not close with John. We have been told that George's mother was a Fightmaster. I have to believe that I am on the right line here. I can't believe this is just a coincidence.

Lizzy: Just found a 1930 census, from Mission, in Johnson County, KS. Lists:

John W Reed: Head of House, Born abt. 1891
Grace Reed: Wife, Born 1907
Leroy: Son, Born 1923
Norma J, Born 1924
Charles, Born 1925
Elizabeth, born abt. 1928

Could the Elizabeth be your gma, and the Norma be your gma's sister. That would mean that JD III married sisters, correct?
It has to be the same man. Many of my family members, including my only family source to do history research, have said that JD Mabe III died of an aneurysm, and she said that he might have been murdered in fact. Do you have any contact info for Nora Reed???

I am still researching, but I have hit a brickwall. I contacted Memorial Park Cemetery in KCKS, supposedly where JD III was buried, but they have no record of him.

Lizzy: One more thing. According to 1900 Cenus, John Daniel Mabe I, was married to Cornelia Fightmaster. Census has JD's mother's birthplace as Ireland, and his father's birthplace as "at sea".

I am starting to believe that Cornelia & Maria are the same person. I have some info on Maria Fightmaster, daughter of George Fightmaster, but can't find info on "Cornelia".

Also, JD Mabe III is buried at Memorial Park Cemetary in Kansas City, KS.

Lizzy: I know that one of JD(III)'s wives was Mildred Cunningham. This was my grandfathers mother. I just attained some pictures over the weekend that I will try to post somewhere in the next week. John Daniel Mabe III was born Sept. 25, 1912 in Kansas City, KS.

Here is what I know of JD(III)'s wives:
Wife #1(name unknow) had: Becky (Gonzalez), Danny & ???. All adopted out.

Wife #2: Liz (your gma I assume) had: Sammy, Kathy & ???.
All adopted out.

Wife #3: Mildred Cunningham, had: Robert (my Gpa), Luther (died at age 3), and Ricky.

My grandfather, Robert Darrold Mabe, died in 1980, and his brother Ricky died within the past few years. Ricky's wife, Joyce is still alive and done some research, I have gotten alot of info from her.

According to Joyce (Ricky's wife), Archie T., who was JD(III)'s brother was once married to a Samara (this is exactly how she spelled it) and together Samara & Archie adopted Becky (their niece & one of JD's daughters) and maybe had a daughter of their own named Lilliam ????. Not totally sure about this.

JD(III)'s mother was not Samyra, it was Kate Tarwater, according to my records.

This is fun isn't it..

Are you in the KC area?? I have told my mom about corresponding with you.

You would be something like 2nd half cousins, if such a thing exists. Will let you know if I run across something.

Lizzy: I am a little confused. I have a marriage license showing Archie T. Mabe (JD III's brother) marrying a Samyra Flanagan. Maybe this is a coincidence. I would assume this isn't your mother, if it was that would mean that your mother married her uncle. Very interesting though. Will do more research to see what I can find.

The problem that you face is that the genealogy of Reuben Mabe of Hawkins County is pure speculation. Mabes and their name variants were found all of NC and VA in 1800 and 1810. As far as I can tell, there is no documentation linking Reuben Mabe to any of the Stokes County, NC Mabes.
