My husband's GGGrandfather, George W. Mabee, was killed on July 2, 1863, at Culp's Hill in the battle of Gettysburg. We have been told that according to the notation on a photo of him at the Gettysburg National Military Park Visitors' Center, he "left a widow, three young daughters, and a 13 year old son." Since this did not quite fit in with our family legends, we fit some pieces together and suggest that George Mabee was married twice and had two families. It appears that his first wife, Margaret (Smith) Mabee died in 1857, leaving a son, Charles C., born in 1850. I have no information about the daughters mentioned above. Then, sometime around 1860, he married Sarah Briggs, and fathered two sons (Judd, around 2 years old, and George H., an infant) by the time he was killed in battle. George H. was my husbands great-grandfather. Thus the widow and the four children mentioned with the photo are from different families, and the two younger sons are not mentioned with the above photo. We would be interested in hearing from ancestors from the first marriage, and would especially appreciate it if we could obtain a copy of that photo, or any other photos of him and/or family members.
