My great-great-great grandfather was Donald Mac Eachern, supposedly from Kinlochmoidart, Scotland. He came to Nova Scotia in 1786. He died about 1821, I think. His wife's name was Christina. Could he have been Bishop Mac Eachern's brother or cousin ? His son, Lauchlin, became a Squire as did his grandson, Donald Lauchlin.

Hi Anne
I am helping a neighbour do some research on his MacEachern family - he is the grandson of Dr. Malcolm T. MacEachern b. Argyle abt 1888 - Dr MacEachern is the person referred to lower down on the list as being Assoc Director of the Am. College of Surgeons. Malcolm married Fanny Brandon of Woodville in 1915 and they had a daughter Frances Isobel b. 1926 who is still alive. My neighbour would love to learn abt MacEachern family in Victoria County. (we are located in Northumberland County - north of Cobourg)
Thanks so much
Gretchen Harris (gharris (at) eagle (dot) ca) pls feel free to email me directly.

I have no idea the time frame your Angus existed in but my grandfather had an uncle Angus, born at St. Andrew's, Antigonish County, the son of Donald "The Tanner" MacEachern and Penelope MacGillivary.

I understood he and most of his family died "of a fever" while living in Londonderry where Angus went to work.

This Angus would have been born circa 1850-1875. Sound too early to be yours? I had to give it a shot considering you have an Angus, a Donald, a Londonderry, an Antigonish and six siblings.

Please let me know if there is any possibility of a link. I know others in the family etc.

The information I have now is Donald J M McEachern born 1888 and died 1961. He was from Wiarton, On and married a Minurva Poore and they had six children. One of them was my dad. I beleive he had a brother Hector who lost a leg in the war. They were married July 15, 1909 in Anabel Township I think that is near Wiarton. He might have another brother named Roderick McEachern. I hope this information helps and please let me know if you have any other information. I was told that we original came from Scotland or Ireland. Please let me know and thank you.

Trish Jerman wrote:
>> The only solid clues we have are the (U.S.) census saying he was born in Canada and an old metal luggage tag that says "Simon McEachern, Craignish Station, NS."

'Creignish Station' would have been the place where the train would have stopped. The name is mis-spelled. It's Creignish (spelled with an 'e' and pronounced 'Craig-nish'). The neighbouring community would be spelled Craignish (spelled with an 'a' and pronounced 'Craig-more'). These are Scottish Gaelic place names that (very litterly) mean Big Rocks and Enough Rocks.

The fact that the tag said 'Craignish Station, NS' narrows it down a bit as both the 'Coopers' and the 'Simon' MacEachern families would have gotten off the train further down the line. Try to get in to the Canadian Census for 1871 or 81. Try looking in the Port Hastings district or the Creignish district. Look for MacEachern family next to Rankin and Cameron (possibly Gillis as well). There might be a clue there.

Good luck.

Dan

Thanks for the response. No clue about nicknames for the family--"Grandpa John" died just before my mother was born, and she says she can't recall much conversation about the MacEacherns. The only solid clues we have are the (U.S.) census saying he was born in Canada and an old metal luggage tag that says "Simon McEachern, Craignish Station, NS." We assume that since my grandfather kept it, it must have some significance, and Mom recalls references to an Uncle Simon. Since we don't even have a reliable birth date for my great grandfather, it has been hard to match him up in the Canadian census. However, the Long Point tip is helpful--I'll try to focus on that. By the way, how is Craignish pronounced? I've always said it as if it rhymed with "Danish" but someone told me it is Crag-nish.

As some one who grew up in the Creignish area of Cape Breton, I just had to respond. MacEachern was not a common name in the community of Creignish but there were several families in the Parish of Creignish. The Parish generally included Creignish, Craigmore, Creignish Rear, Troy and Long Point. At times its borders were flexible, depending on the availability of a priest. From time to time through the years Queensville, Princeville, Kingsville and Glendale were part of the parish as well (and sometimes it was reversed.

Do you know if the family had a nickname? For example, The 'Cooper' MacEacherns (so named because there was barrel maker in the family some generations before), were (and still are) a plentiful and prominent family in Craigmore.

The name Simon is also a clue. Generally not a common name but very common in one family in Long Point. This area is now part of Judique Parish.

I have MacEacherns in my background (my grandmother was a 'Maple Ridge' MacEachern from Queensville) but your information doesn't ring any bells with me.

Dan
They had 3 daughters ..Mae (b1889), Muriel (b1894) and Jessie (b 1903)..His wife and 3 daughters all died in the Halifax explosion..Mae had married Harry Parker and they had a daughter Dorothy born May 8,1917. Dorothy who was my grandmother survived the explosion and went to live with her other grandfather. If any of these names match anything you have please let me know. I don't know if John had any brothers or sisters so anything you could provide would he me out . thanks

Re: Annie Mac Eachern

Hi. Do you have any other information like WHERE Annie MacEachern died? I have been researching my mother's side of the family, "KEACH" for several years. Only recently have I hired a researcher in the state of Connecticut to obtain official copies of documents for me. {Connecticut is a difficult state to get records from!} I have searched US Census records for hours during a FREE TRIAL at Genealogy.com. I have downloaded some Census sheets to look at at a later time and have also written down notes that do not OBVIOUSLY connect with my family because they might connect later when I have more information.

Please do not get your hopes up that I can help. I will go over what information I do have and if I find anything even remotely worth following I will let you know ! Hold on to my first email address ladymhawk@hotmail.com as I have maintained it for many years and intend to keep it going. If I do not post another message - or your email address changes please let me know. I have a feeling that I will find information about Annie MacEachern.

My mother's middle name was "Anne" -- Marcia Anne KEACH b. Nov. 28, 1945 d. March 22, 1988 in a house fire in Medford, Massachusetts with my 1/2 sister, Michelle Abigail ARCHAMBEAU b. Nov. 8, 1979 d. March 22, 1988. My 1/2 brother, Brian ARCHAMBEAU - who is deaf, survived as he had stayed overnight at the Beverly School for the Deaf (Massachusetts). My mother had moved into this place from a homeless shelter and was not allowed to have even relatives stay for more than a month at a time -- otherwise i would have still been there as I was temporarily staying with my mom in January 1988. My son, Michael CATANZANO was experiencing speech and cognitive learning associated with age regression and he was temporarily staying with my mother's sister, Susan KEACH (Radcliffe) in the state of Maryland. I also have KEACH family in Maine....very few of us Keach's still living : (
