Emily Josephine MacFarland

Emily Josephine MacFarland, 96, of El Grove. died Saturday at an Elk Grove hospital after a lengthy illness.
A native of Placerville, she was a resident of Vallejo for 47 years, moving to El Grove in 1989.
She was a clerk for the Vallejo Times Herald newspaper for 33 years, retiring in 1975. She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Vallejo; past president of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Vallejo;
member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, No, 195; charter member of Sutter Solano Medical Center Hospital Guild; past secretary of the Solano County Historical Society; and member of Vallejo Chapter 278, Order of the Eastern Star. She was named woman of the year by the Vallejo Professional Business Women’s Association.
Mrs. MacFarland is survived by her son, Bruce MacFarland of Winton; one brother Roy Blakeley of North Carolina; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the First United Methodist Church, Vallejo. Private interment will be in Union Cemetery, Placerville. Colonial Chapels. Vallejo, is in charge of arrangements

I am searching for the parents of Albert Lee MacFarland b. 1874 OH, d. 1951 OH. There are 3 possible families in the 1880 census.

Albert Lee MacFarland married Wilmahema Schmidt (probably the surname of her 1st husband) and their known children were Gordon Maxwell b. 1900, Robin Adair b.1905 and Lea b.1908.

I am not a MacFarland descendant, but am going this research for a friend.

America from Ireland and settled in Lancaster Co.,
in 1718, with his wife, Jennet(sp), and children. How long the
family was in Ireland is not known, but all his children
were possibly born in Ireland, except Rebecca. She was
born 1720 in PA. Robert died c1750 in PA.

John, Jr. had one sister, Catherine, b. 25 Jul 1798 in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. I seek information about their father, John McFarland/MacFarland, Sr. who may have come from Northern Ireland. I welcome information from descendants about his ancestry, place of birth, and date of arrival in the colonies.

biography book you mentioned with pictures of the MacFarland's and their house. I grew up in Monroeville and always had a fascination with the historic section of town on Main Street. The post office had long closed, but there was a store up the steps in front of the Macfarland house where the kids bought penny candy. I later child sat for the family who purchased the mansion, who were in the process of restoring the house and grounds at a major expense. The horse stables alone were a costly repair. The inside was beautiful, expansive, dark wood walls and floors with a huge fireplace in the living room surrounded in dutch tiles. You could literally become confused winding around endless rooms having taken a tour to find the way back to the kitchen. It would be interesting to learn about the family who lived in this home. Thank you.

William MacFarland sold race horses, polo ponies, trotters and fancy horses in general at his Broad Street Horse Bazaar at Broad and Cherry Streets in Phila in the late 1800s, early 1900s. He was raised in Monroeville, NJ and had stock farms in Bridgeton and Eatontown, NJ. and later raised show dogs in Camden. He died in 1949. Would be interested in any info on him as he is my grandfather. Thank you!

I am researching the George - McFarland families who were in Virginia early, and much later went to Missouri. The ancestors of interest were Carroll George, b. 4-22-1796 in Tennessee, who married Sarah Hale McFarland, b. 4-14-1806 in North Carolina, married 11-1822, in Missouri. I believe that Sarah is the daughter of John McFarland, born 2-28-1764 in Virginia, and I need proof of this for the DAR. I have information to share on the George-McFarland children.

I'm researching my husband's family. He had a great-grandmother whose father was a McFarland (also sometimes spelled McFarlin, McFarlane). This g-grandmother, Sara Peel McFarland, named one of her kids Blassingame Harvey, and the name Blassingame persisted for a couple of generations, finally dropping to simply Blassie (who was female). In fact, some researchers think that Sarah's husband's father's name was Blassingame Harvey McFarland.

I'm wondering who the connection was that would bring in a family name like that with such persistence.

Oh -- dates. Sarah was born 1819 in Arkansas Territory; her husband was born 1815 in Clinton County, Kentucky; his father in 1780 in Virginia. He and Sarah died in Independence county Arkansas; one report says that Alexander died in California (the second in my husband's family to have gone out, presumably to seek for gold, and died out there).

I've found some more info on Christeena; her father was Alexander P McFarlin/McFarland (1815-1860) and her mother was Sarah J. Peel (1819- ?).
She had brothers Henry (b. 1843 - , Blassingame (b 1841), and Alexander G. (b. 1848.)
and one sister, Kate (b 1838; married W. C. Cannon). Kate was still living in 1910.
Blassingame was on Census as a farmer in 1860; I've not found him since then.
Alexander (listed as McFarlin in Census) he was still living in 1870 in Greenbriar Township, Independence Co, Arkansas.
Henry was "clerking" in the 1870 census

Christeena and her husband, Dr. William Bell, lived in Independence County Arkansas.

Sure would like to track down those earlier McFarlin/MacFarlands and Peels.

Do you have a Margaret Hamill in your family once married to a MacFarland in the USA in the 1930's? Margaret was born in Govan;Glasgow, Scotland on April 29, 1910. Her parents were John and Mary Hamill (nee Mullen). Margaret went to the USA in 1929 by ship on a visit. She stayed and married a MacFarland (his first name unknown and last name spelling not positive). Margaret and her husband had a son who was killed in Quam (Korean War probably). John lived with or near Mary & William in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma. My grandfather told stories about this great-uncle. In another census I found a brother Samuel living with her and William.

Hiram McFarland appears on the 1900 Arkansas (Independence County) Census. There seems to be a connection between him and Christeena McFarland Bell, also of Independence County.
I know she had a brother Alex and a sister Kate (Mrs. W. C. Cannon), but I can't find other links.

Hiram was born in Kentucky, 1853, but was in Arkansas in the latter 19th century.

I now know that my grandfather, G. William MacFarland, who grew up in south Jersey in Monroeville, had a brother, J. Earl MacFarland. They are standing behind their parents, James and Margaret MacFarland, with their three other brothers in a picture I have, taken circa 1900. Have found a fair amount about them and their ancestry in the last six months but previous to that, all I knew was that their father was James MacFarland of Monroeville. There is a two page biographical article about James, with his picture included, in a book of N.J. bios and some pictures of his or his son's house, most likely his. If any of this pertains to your research, just let me know.

He was married to Margaret Seavers and his father was William Henry MacFarland (McFarland/McPharlin), mother was Drucilla Tomlin. Also, any information known about (George) William MacFarland, who was James' son and my grandfather, born 1863, a dealer in fancy horses in Philadelphia, would be appreciated. These names are derived from Old Irish MacPharlain, meaning 'son of Parlan'.
Early examples are Malcolm Mcpharlane, who witnessed a charter in about 1385.
Duncan, son of Malcolm Makfarlane was on the receiving end of a charter in 1395.
Andrew M'Farlane became a burgess freeman of Glasgow in 1577.

Nimmo's "History of Stirlingshire" relates that the ancestor of the Macfarlanes of Kirkton was George Macfarlane of Markinch, 2nd son of Andrew Macfarlane, in the reign of James V (1513-1542). George sold the lands of markinch and went to settle in the North Highlands amongst his namesakes the Clan Macfarlane, also known in Gaelic as the M'Allans or Allanach, because of their descent from Allan Macfarlane, younger son of one of the lairds of Macfarlane, who had settled in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire several centuries before. From him are descended the families of Auchorran, Balnengown, Lismurdie, etc. and also several others in Braemar and Strathspey.

Robert Macfarlane (1815-1883), born in Rutherglen, was for 17 years the editor of the "Scientific American".

Many other spellings are given - Makfarland and Makferlande, 1546, M'Farlen 1603, Mcfarling 1668, M'Farling 1663, Makferlan 1529, McKfarlen 1728, McFerlane 1612 and MacPharheline 1610.

Just found my great grandfather in the 1920 cenus in Phild, Pa, He was with his mother Mary A, widow and a brother Samuel W age 15, his name was John G age 25. The boys were born in Phild, Pa and parents from Ireland. Trying to find more family from there.John's death certificate said parents names were Matthew MacFarland and Mary Anne Belle Not sure of their death date except his was before 1920.

Arnold Hillman MacFarland was my maternal grandfather and I'm starting my genealogy research on his ancestry. I think he was born in Norwich, New London County, Connecticut. His parents, Harvey Warren MacFarland and Adelaide Elizabeth Hillman MacFarland worked for Norwich State Hospital and resided there. According to my family, My grandfather lived in a boarding house and saw his parents on weekends. Harvey Warren MacFarland was born in Jersey City, New Jersey. Adelaide Elizabeth Hillman was born in England. They were married in New York.
