I have been told by my aunt who is 90 years old who was told by her aunt that we are related to John W Mackay, they were to go and see Ellen Mackay in New York but never went, I would like to know if this is true, do you have the names of John W Mackay brothers or sisters and his parents names. the family spells there name Mackey, and came from Dublin, but went to Canada then Michigan.

My Grandmothers sister Maureen Helen Louisa Johnston born 1927 in Saintfield, Northern Ireland married Brian Joseph Mackay on the 19 March 1948 in Dundella, Northern Ireland.
Brian was described as a Corporal in the Royal Army Service Corp. I know they moved to Leicester in the 1970's and have at least three children, David, Lesley and Christopher. I would love to find out what happened to them.

I am trying to trace Roderick Mackay or any of his relatives or friends.
He was born in Dornoch, Scotland on 9th February 1925. He married and emigrated to Australia in 1946. He divorced and left Australia sometime after 1950. He travelled on the Queen Elizabeth on 20th January 1955 from Canada for a 3 month visit staying at 3 River Street, Dornoch, returning - presumably to Canada - in April 1955.

Would like to share info and connect with descendants of the Angus Mackay family, found near Glasgow in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses. Angus Mackay, a master cabinetmaker, married Catherine Arbothnot Mackenzie. At least 8 children, including Charles, Maryann, Lachlan, William, Annie, Angus, John, and Neilson.

I'm another great-granddaughter of James McKay - my father was the son of Mark McKay. Does anyone know what their view was on the spelling of their last name? We spell it McKay, but my grandfather Mark used McKay at times and MacKay at others, and the records on various family members are inconsistent.

Some information that may be of use to you.

The Duncan Fisher you refer to may be a son of Duncan Fisher and Jessie Ferguson. I have information on their marriage and Duncans immigration in 1821. Duncan Sr is my GGG grandfather and William (the next son to Duncan Jr) is my GG grandfather.

Duncan Sr arrived in Bytown in 1821 from Montreal or Quebec City on the Swiftsure.

Duncan Sr played a role in the Ballygiblin riots. See following link.

It appears a number of the sons moved on to western Ont and later Canada west. See difference between 1851 1nd 1861 Beckwith Census (federal).

There is evidence that the eldest son John located in Carleton Place. Duncan Sr's wife Jessie Ferguson is noted in the 1901 Carleton Place census as living with John. Peter appears to have moved to Georgian Bay area (Bruce 1901 federal census).

The family names appear to follow in your line (Duncan and Jessie). Other names carried through generations are John and William.

My daughter and I have been tracing further back in the family and think we've got back as far as 1580 on the Mackay side. Honeyman was my great, great grandfather.

The thing is, it gets quite complicated around the birth of Honeyman, as it would seem that the father, the Alexander you were referring to, also had children with another woman.

Hello,

John Alexander MacKay was born abt. 1820 on a journey from Oban Scotland to St. Peter's on Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. His father (John MacKay) was born in Lochalsh, Scotland in 1794 (d. 9 Nov 1875 - in Canada?). John Alexander was married to Isabel MacKenzie and they had 11 children, one of whom was Ann Chisolm MacKay (b. 2 Feb 1861, d. 17 May 1936 in MA), my gr gr grandmother.

I have found info on other MacKays located in Cape Breton, but none on this rather large family. Any help would be really appreciated.

My grandmother was Mary Ann Johnston. She had a half brother named Charles McKay. Any possibility there is any connection. Both came from Ireland and settled in Phila. Pa.

I don't know anything about Donald only that he was born in Middlesex about 1846 and was listed in 1881 census as Piper to H.R.H.Prince of Wales and that he had married my great aunt Jeannie McLean a few years before.

Hello from Australia. I am a Mackay descended from a family born in Linlithgow Shire Scotland in 1820's & 1830's. Their father was John Mackay (1800-1878) mother Martha Douglas. My g-g-grandmother Martha came to Australia in 1856 and, unwed. gave birth to my g-grandfather James. Many of Martha's siblings seem to have come to Victoria also. I am trying to unravel!! I am also a descendent from Neil MacKay and Christy MacDonald via Kenneth MacKay who was killed in Dalry after being struck by a train. He was married to Catherine MacKinnon and their son Donald was my gg grandfather. I don't have much info on this line but would like to share what I do have.

Thank you for your response. I spent three days recently at the BanQ and SGCF facilities in Montreal searching Jean Mackay's ancestry. Personnel at both facilities were very helpful in my search because of a number of different aspects; 1. Jean (french) Mackay (english) is the way he printed his name, 2. the groom's parent's names (or an attestation from an officer if he were recently discharged from the British army) is not in the notarial records or the marriage registry, and 3. for a 45 year old man with a large farm to apparently marry for the first time to a girl of about 15 years of age.

We could not find him elsewhere in the notarial records (unusual for a landowner of 5 by 50 arpents who may have had employees, sales, purchases, etc.), or in the listing of original land grants, and as the seignorial records for Baie-St-Paul were not in Montreal, we could not search them.
We tried finding another Jean Mackay born about 1771 who might have moved to Baie-St-Paul, but the candidates we found in St. Eustache and Baie-du-Febve were still in those locations after 1806. So, the seignorial records, if they exist, seem to be my only remaining search recommendation. I would appreciate assistance if anyone has access to those records.

Jean Mackay (his signature, but spelled Makaille, Mckane, Makay by others) was a 45 year old farmer who owned land measuring 5 by 50 arpents on the Cote Saint-Antoine at Baie Saint-Paul when he married Marie-Archange Martel there on 12 April 1806. There is no mention of the parents of Jean Makaille in either the notarial record by Sasseville of the contract of marriage, or in the marriage register of St-Pierre et St-Paul. Who were his parents?

The Alexander that married Nellie Calder is also in my line -- 5th great grandfather to be exact. He left Beauly for Nova Scotia in 1784. Curious if the individual who started the thread has any additional information on the early generations. I have a paper trail back to the Alexander born in 1670.

My people were on the ship Rowena in 1818. They were John Rose and his wife, Isobella Calder, daughter of Daniel Calder. They were of Ross and Cromarty in Invergordon, Scotland. Their son, Alexander, married "Squire McKay's daughter, Janet or Jennett. Janet's mother was also named Jennett. At least two of the siblings married into the McKay family.

Both were widowed and resided in Tuckersmith twp. Huron co. Ontario. They were married 28 Oct. 1864 in Colborne Township.

Robert's parents were James and Margaret SMITH.

I am looking for information regarding Duncan Fisher (b. 1839 Beckwith twp.) and his Ann MACKAY (b 1843 Scotland). Ann is the daughter of George MACKAY and his wife Janett (Jessie) MACLEOD MACKAY SMITH.

Duncan and Ann married 26 Dec. 1866 at Embro Oxford. At the time of their marriage they were both residents of Tuckersmith Huron Co. Ontario.

Three of their children Jessie b 1869, Sarah Ann b 1871 and George Duncan were born in Tuckersmith twp Huron Co. Ontario.

George Duncan Fisher was living in Wellington County with other family members during the 1881 census.

I am looking for more information regarding this family.

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone has found a clue as to who his parents were. There were certainly a number of Mackays in Canada at the time, but none of the sons are possibilities for this guy. Solomon Symard stood in for his father at the marriage. btw- the marriage date is April 22, 1806.

My own Jean Mackay was born in 1765 in Montreal, but he is accounted for in 1806 and he had a beautiful signature compared to the simple writing of this Jean Mackay. (The French priests used many different spellings of the name Mackay, so I have always assumed his name really was Mackay, since that or possibly Mackey is how he signed it.)

Have you tried to trace the land he owned? Maybe that would provide a clue. There should be a record as to whether he purchased or inherited the land.

Mackays of Dornoch

Hello,

I am currently researching my husbands family who were Mackays of Dornoch, however have become stuck.

Marion Mackay (nee Mackay) was born around 1815 and died in 14 April 1897 in Dornoch. She was married to Andrew Mackay and had 5 children: Alexander, Jessie, Andrew, Angus and Robert (Our relation).

I cannot find when Marion was born, her wedding date and what happened to her son Alexander who died in 1888 aged 28 - again no death certificate can be traced.

I was wondering if there was anyone out their that perhaps was a relation to Alexander or knew of his details?

I am also looking for the details for Margaret Rosa Mackay who was Robert Mackays 2nd wife. She was born in Maryleborne and died in Dornoch on 10th April 1954. Her parents are recorded as Angus Mackay and maria Raffereiter but I am unable to find anything on them and got the details from the marriage certificate and death certificate.

I would be grateful if anyone had any of this information.

I am trying to find parents (or more??) for an "Allen MacKay".

My information shows him born 1878 in East Lake Ainslie, Nova Soctia, Canada, and deceased 1962 in Quincy, Massachusetts.

I know he was married to Marion Louise Holmes and they died within a few days of each other.

I find MANY MacKays in Nova Scotia - so many, in fact, that I have no way to figure out which, if any, are Allen's ancestors.

Seeking information re Gordon Weatherstone Mackay, born about 1901 in Hongkong. He was married to Mela Kamakee Fairchild Vaughan, and lived in the Philippines. They were interred at the Japanese prisoner-of-war camp at Santo Tomas in the Philippines during the war. They had a daughter by the name of Joan Kamakee MacKay.

I just found some letters written by a cousin, dated 1939. She lists the children of Donald and Margaret (maiden name unknown)Mackay, who were Donald Henry, John, Duncan, Neil, Roderick and 3 daughters, one named Annabelle. The cousin who wrote the letters was Christina Mackay, descended from Neil, who married William MacKenzie. Their daughter Mary Christina married a McDonald. Mary visited me 10 years ago, a delightful lady. The facts her mother wrote about are that Donald and Margaret owned the Strome Hotel. Donald decided it was not a place to raise their children so sold it. I don't know if this is the family branch you seek. I hope so.

Your message interests me. My great grandfather was Donald Henry Mackay, born 1807, Lochcarron, Ross Shire, Scotland. His father was Donald Mackay and he had brothers named Malcolm, Hugh and John, and a sister. I know members of my branch married McDonalds. Donald Mackay Sr. sold their home in the late 1830's and it became the Strome Ferry Hotel. That's about all I have. Do youu think there is a connection?

I have my gg grandfathers death certificate: Donald Mackay born 1833, Isle of Skye, Scotland, father's name John (occupation steward), died Victoria Australia 1859 aged 25, in Australia 6 years, married to Susan Flynn in Victoria.

Could he be the Donald Mackay son of John Mackay and Margaret (Peggy) Ross born 1832 in Stornoway, Ross & Cromarty, found in IGI?

There is a Donald Mackay son of John and Margaret Mackay in 1841 Census (John & Peggy in 1851 Census). Siblings - Catherine, Mary, James, Murdo, John, and Alexander. Fathers occupation sawyer.

Father's occupation doesn't match
POB - Isle of Skye doesn't match, but in right general area
Donald had a sister Mary in Victoria, Australia - age matches.

Does anyone else have knowledge of this family?

I have been looking for my grandfathers brother, Russell Earl Beatty. He went by Earl. Wife was Rosa Bedwell, Married 25 Aug 1919. In 1920 census was in Greene Co Indiana. In the 1930 census I found Rosa in the Evansville State Hospital.I can't find him after 1920. Thank you for any info on Earl or Rosa Beatty. Thank You Again Betty
