I'm not really sure if i can help a lot but I think it was my great grandfather who came here from England around the late 1800 I have a lot of deeds and stuff of Geo Mackley somewhere I've heard the name George Mackley from my mother's family as she is Mary Jane Mackley her family originally moved to Elk Garden West Virginia and surrounding areas which is 30 miles from Cumberland Md.I think I even have Geo Mackley's marriage license at my other house .I have hundreads of family photos also most of these Mackleys are buried at are familys farm that my cousins now own called the Thomas family cemetery.I wish I could help u more as I think there is a Joe Mackley AND Others my cousin and I still take care of the cemetery him or my mother could tell u everything about them as I',m only 32 and have a hard time remembering everything. I JUST CALLED MY MOM AND SHE SAYS GEORGE MACKLEY WAS MY GRANDFATHERS BROTHER AND LIVED ON WESTERNPORT HILL IN WESTERNPORT MD ABOUT 20 MILES FROM CUMBERLAND.HE MARRIED ANNA AND HAD DAUGHTER FRANCES BANE HAS 2 CHILDREN. i do barely remember going up to see these people when younger.MY mother said that the one from the 1890's was probably her grandfather and she said they had lived in a lot of area's around here.I know this is kind of confusing as I'm trying to write while talking ,but IF U NEED ANY INFORMATION ON THIS FAMILY CALL (304)813-5584 I'M ROBERT PRESTON MY MOTHER AND COUSIN'S ARE ABOUT ALL i know around here that could help u if this is the family as most are gone . i will give u one of their numbers so u can talk to them.

My mothers mother was a Makley from St. Marys, Ohio

My grandfather was friends with John Dillinger and had him over for dinner at one time. My grandfather was an Oldigus from Minster, Ohio and was never involved in any of John's dealings.

Mackley Family

I am searching for information on the Mackley Family. The names affiliated are Joseph Mackley (Blodgett, St. Geneveve Cty, Missouri), Williamson Mackley, and Williamson Grandstead Mackley. I'm not sure where the family originated from. Joseph was born 9/1851. He made his home in the St. Geneveve Cty area. He was at one time a preacher (Baptist), a JP and a farmer. There was also a Mackley Mercantile in the area. Anyone with info, please post a response or email me. Thanks!

Sandra: I am extremely excited!! Finally, I found someone who has very similar info. Joseph Mackley is my direct ancestor. I have quite a bit of info on him and his wife and their children. I would love to share info with you. It takes me a while to check all the message boards I post on. You are my first response. I have been researching the Mackley family lines for close to 20 years and have hit several brick walls. My email address is psells1180@aol.com. Please email me. I think we can benefit each other. My info comes from a combined effort of a cousin now deceased. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, i am new to all this family tree stuff but have been intrigued to find so much information on here about my family. I am Rebecca Mackley daughter of John Mackley who was son of Norman (brother to Kate, Arthur, Cyril, Joseph, Victor, Edith, Frederick) i hope some of these names may mean something to you. John my father was an only child to Norman and Minnie however this was Normans second marriage and had children with his first wife who my mother thinks moved to Australia/New zealand. Unfortunately my father died about 10 years ago and my grandma about 14 years ago. Norman died when my dad was quite young and being the only child he ended up with alot of original documents which me and my mum have been going through and trying to piece things together. Reading the messages sent between you and Peter Mackley i think there is a connection. We don't actually live in Gravesend anymore but moved to Lowestoft in suffolk about 22 years ago for my dads job! Please get in touch!

Further to my other replies, your grandfather Desmond was may father's brother. I have a number of photos of him in the army. As you say he ran off to join the army at an early age and went up through the ranks to become a quite high ranking officer (I believe Major was his highest actual rank but he was acting above this for a time after the war). If you wish further details, please e-mail me.

The man who was killed was Joseph Mackley, my father's father. He was killed after getting a blood clot in the leg. This he received whilst unloading stores from the S.S. Minniehaha which went aground in the Scilly Isles. He was an officer on the ship and volunteered to help and so no compensation was paid. He died in 1911 when my father was only 8. The ship was eventually refloated. My father remained in Gravesend where I was born in 1951. I have two brothers and two sisters.

We've seen this film, but don't know who the Charles Mackley is. Historical film made in 1973 titled 'Dillinger'.
I searched the internet re: this film and found this info:
'In the movie, gang member Charles Mackley is shot in a bank robbery by a bank guard and dies. Actually Mackley died in Sept. 1934 when he was shot trying to escape from Ohio State Penitentiary.'
Does anyone know the family line of this Charles Mackley?
Sandy
English Mackleys

Hello from England. My mothers maiden name was Mackley. Her father was a Major in the army and originated from Gravesend in Kent where I understand quite a few Mackleys can be found. (There is a large construction company which is distantly related to us).

The story goes that the Kent Mackleys at the turn of the century were quite well off but Grandads father married beneath himself. They cut him off without a penny and he had to go sailing, eventually being crushed to death between two ships in the Isles of Scilly.

Back in the 1930's there was an Uncle Victor Mackley who apparently owned half of Meopham in Kent. He was very eccentric and eventually left everything to his housekeeper! My grandfathers neice married an American and moved to the USA.

Grandad also had a couple of male nephews who will obviously have retained their names.

Dates are a bit vague I'm afraid but I noticed that no-one appears to have mentioned Gravesend so I thought I would!

Gravesend Mackleys

Well, I'm not sure. Somewhere along the line, my Great Grandfather (I think) was estranged from the Mackleys in Gravesend - something to do with an unapproved marriage and the family ended up in Ramsgate. I believe he died when he was crushed when transferring between two ships - he was working on them on the time. My Grandfather, Albert Desmond Mackley, spent his early childhood in Gravesend and somehow ended up as a pot boy working in a pub in Camden, London. When he was about 16 he went into the army, and spent much of the 20s and 30s in India and the Sudan, eventually finishing his army career as a Major and I understand he was also acting colonel at one time. He was quite a man, self taught, fluent in hindustani and also a very private individual so he was never exactly a mine of information on past family history! He died in 1988 but my Nan is still very much alive, so I will see if she can fill me in on any nebulous details although she may not know that much more. Grandad had a brother and two sisters all of whom produced children. Unfortunately the family was pretty widespread and I havelost contact with my various cousins. Grandad had a daughter - my mother and a son, who produced two girls. I think the prediliction in the family is to have girls and only the boys from my Grandads brother, one boys name was Gordon will have carried on the Mackley name.

You mentioned Mackleys in New Zealand. I have been over there three times as I married a New Zealander (with a pretty odd name!)

Good grief, I didn't realise all this time had elapsed.!!! Life has been so frantic one way and another the past few years, and then my computer went down and I lost all my contacts. Finally found the time to search for this page again!

Peter, if you're still looking at this page, I'd be interested to renew contact. It's a bit of a bummer - I was in Sydney Christmas before last so it would have been nice to meet up with you.

I am Albert Desmond Mackley's grandaughter. He had two children by Mary Bush who died back in the early 1950s. My mother Olive, is still alive (she's 76) but living in residential care as she has dementia. My uncle's name was Albert Joseph Mackley. He had two daughters - names are Roanne and Rachel. I'm not in contact with them, but they live in the Yorkshire area. Uncle Albert died last year. Grandad (Albert Desmond) died in 1988. He also had two sisters Gladys, and Lily as well as a brother who I think was called Reg or Tom. Gladys died a few weeks after Grandad. Lily (Lil as she was called) died some years ago in a home. I can't recall the name of Grandad's brother, I'm afraid.

If you're in England again this year, let me know and perhaps we can meet for a drink.

If Gordon reads this post, perhaps he could drop me a line, because when my computer went down, I lost all my emails including his email address!
