I am searching for information about my great-grandfather, James MacMillan. He also used the spellings McMillen and McMillian. He was born about 1872, probably in Scranton, Pennsylvania and in January of 1900, married Nellie Dolan, also of Scranton. Nellie was the daughter of Patrick and Margaret Dolan, who immigrated from Ireland. James and Nellie had children named James, Ethel, William, Elmer, Roy, Margaret and Mary Maude. James worked as a fireman on the railroads.

My name is Jaclyn Dalrymple Johnson. my parents were John (Jack) Dalrymple and Beatrice (nee Kelley). My grandparents were Jane (Steedman) and James Dalrymple from Dumferline, Scotland. Bernice, the info in your first post from 2001 was fascinating to me and tells me way more than I have ever known about my ancestors. Thank you so much for doing this research. I think we last spoke when I lived in Florida. I now live in roanoke, virginia. Would love to hear from you. email: jaclyn13@cox.net.

Hi David

I think I have now placed your family whom I've encountered in my research. Your Daniel was the son of Robert McMillan (1816-1896)and Elizabeth King. (Actually Robert's second marriage). Robert in turn was the son of Daniel McMillan (1780-1866)and Mary McKelvie.

Your 1847 Daniel's siblings were Mary, Agnes, Robert and Elizabeth.

If correct, I can elaborate as the families do overlap in Kilmarnock.

It might be easier to communicate by email if you are amenable.

All the best

David

Daniel and Alexander Macmillan were founders of the global publishing empire, born in Arran and Irvine respectively. Alexander was the grandfather of Harold Macmillan our old prime minister. Have established that the Macmillans house from c 1815 in Irvine was at 25 East Back Road, (close to Glasgow Vennel, where Robert Burns worked as a flax dresser 1n 1781-82). Two of my great grandfather Robert McMillan's children were born at 4 East Back Road in 1877 and 1879. Be interested in any info on the Irvine Macmillan's and McMillans in the 1800s. Also in the circumstances that saw the Macmillan family move from Arran to Irvine

No Ewen there, but a Hugh, aged c3. which would fit with his name of Ewen Hugh.
Other children are Ann McMillan, 13, and John aged 12

1841 - just Duncan McMillan, Mary, Ann, John and Robert.

According to extracted entry on IGI, Duncan McMillan married Mary Tod on 20 July 1833, at Kilmallie.

Hope this is of some help.

Christine
John,

I didn't "have" that info, I surfed it up. Where did the other McMillans live? Die? Ages? What are you working from -- your family notes? Why Wm. "probably" b in 1901? Do you have Wm's death cert/obit? "Probably" Scranton? Why "probaby" James as the father?

This timeframe is so recent that you should have more accurate dates available in every dataase, which is why I'm wondering why I can't see them... they should be easily to find. Disappearing for one census is okay -- but rarely does anyone disappear for 3 censuses

Kate

[I'm just wondering if they called these boys by different names... there is no Roy MacM (any variation, in 1910 census b in PA)

Ohio deaths:

Name: Roy MacMillan
Birth Date: 4 Dec 1909
Birth State: Pennsylvania
Birth Country: United States

Gender: Male
Race: White

Death Date: 6 Apr 1996
Death Time: 7:00 PM
Hospital of Death: Long-Term Care Facilities
City of Death: New Philadelphia
County of Death: Tuscarawas
Certificate: 034327
Age at Death: 86
Hospital Status: Other/Nursing Home

Social Security Number: 569-03-0594
Father's Surname: MacMillan
Mother's Maiden Name: ***** Nolan ****
Marital Status: Married
Education: 8
Armed Forces Indicator: Yes
Branch of Service: US Navy
Industry of Decedent: Construction
Occupation of Decedent: Carpenters

Primary Registration District: 7901

Chapters IX and X are about Scotland and the MacMillans. There is also a gedcom on the site.

Do you have any idea of the time frame? You also might want to check the Clan MacMillan web site.
http://www.clanmacmillan.org/

Yes, that is the same James MACMILLAN that I am descended from. His son, George, was my ggg grandfather. My information had him coming first to Cecil County, Maryland and later to York County, Pennsylvania. Your husband must be descended from his daughter Maria. I show Maria married to Daniel Carter. I would be most interested in exchanging information with you. My e-mail address is neilel@aol.com.

MacMillan Clan

Seeking information on my "MacMillan" ancestors and descendants. Ewen Hugh MacMillan was born in Scotland approx. 1848-1851, maybe Kilmallie, Argyll or Inverness. He had a sister named Katherine Todd MacMillan, and a brother named James Todd MacMillan. Their parents were Duncan and Mary (nee: Todd) MacMillan. Ewen married Alice "Jepson" from Over Darwen, Lancashire, England in Pontypridd, Wales on September 19, 1876 and they had 4 known about children, Mary Alice, Duncan Thomas, Nancy Ann, and Garfield Alfred who was tragically killed when struck by a speeding taxi horse drawn wagon on September 13, 1886, he was 3 yrs old. Alice died shortly after on December 27, 1886 and is buried in Cathay's Cemetery with little Garfield. After the loss of his wife and youngest son, Ewen packed up the other 3 children, and moved to Canada. His siblings James and Katherine also moved to Canada finally settling in BC.
Researching people from Scotland (and Ireland) has proven to be very difficult. Please, any information or assistance that you can provide would be very greatly appreciated, Gary Stuart A. Haslam, Surrey, BC, Canada, gshaslam@telus.net

Hi Christine, I did have some of this information and I am fairly convinced that it is highly probable and certainly most likely that this is indeed the family of my ancestors. The name of the parents is an exact hit, and the fact that a child has the name Ewen and Hugh and his age fits. Further evidence is the other siblings younger than Ewen named Catherine and James. The age for James fits with the age of my James. Catherine is out a little as my Catherine was thought to have been born early 1860s. However, I suspect that she married a man in Manitoba as a matter of security and she likely made herself 10 years younger. Now having said all this, I have very little doubt, if any, that this is truly my MacMillan ancestors. Thank you.
Can you suggest other resources I can or should research?

My great grandfather, Daniel McMillan, lived in Irvine in the 1860's. He was born in Kilmarnock, but the family were originally from Saltcoats. My father claimed that there was a relationship between our family and the publishing company MacMillan's, but I have not attempted to verify it.

Incidently, Daniel McMillan's father was also a Robert McMillan - not the same man as your Robert, though. Many Daniels and Roberts in my family tree. I'm wondering if you know the name of your Robert's father, and when and where he was born.

David MacMillan

Hi David,

My Daniel was born in Kilmarnock in 1847 and at some point moved to Irvine. They lived at 9 Fullarton Place, and later at No 17 Kirkgate, in a large house that was demolished in the 1960's. Daniel's father was Robert McMillan, born abt 1818 in Saltcoats. His family were also weavers. Robert worked for the railway.

My Daniel is buried in the Old Parish Churchyard in Irvine, and I'm going to guess that your Robert is buried there as well. In the course of my research I spoke to the folks at the Old Parish Church. They asked me if Robert McMillan was my Daniel's father. My Robert was married to Elizabeth King, so not a match. The spouse of the Robert they have is Marion. This seems to tie in to your story.

David

Kate,
My uncle Richard gave Dolan as his grandmother's maiden name while an aunt told me that the name was Nolan. I seem to get more possible matches with the latter. I know that I had a great-uncle Elmer that lived in California and Elmer Jay MacMillan seems like a good fit for my family tree. I don't know why my MacMillan/Nolan ancestors do not appear in the Census records. Apparently, they kept a low profile and did not leave much of a "paper trail" for me to follow. Got any other information for me?
Thanks for your response.
John MacMillan

Donald Baxter MacMillan and father, Neil

I am trying to learn more about the ancestry of Donald Baxter MacMillan. I am not related but understand he lived with a McDonald family for about two years after his parents died. Murdick McDonald may be brother to my great grandfather whose line I have reached a dead end on.

I have also learned, that Donald Baxter's father, Captain Neil was bron 'within site" of the house where Murdick McDonald was bron. This would greatly help in my McDonald research if I could narrow down where in Bras D'or Lakes, Cape Breton the McDonald's may have lived.

I am travelling to CB in a few weeks so any information would be great!

Murdoch Macmillan & Family

Hi all,

I have been researching my family history for some time now and the only thread that I can't trace is my paternal grandfather's side, the Macmillans! I know that my dad's grandfather's name was Murdo/Murdoch Macmillan and that he married Katie Macdonald on the 4th Feb 1910. The marriage cert. says Murdoch's parents were John and Annie Macmillan but that's as far as I can get. I do know that my dad's family have a connection to Stornoway also.
If anyone knows anything about this side of my family please get in touch!
Thanks,
Kirsten Macmillan

I would like to get in touch with Doug or Janet MacMillan. They submitted a family history to the Prince Edward Island Register site but the email address associated with it does not work. I have a question on their family data.
