Hi.Your Margaret Beaton and Angus Cameron are listed with their family histories in the book Mabou Pioneers Vol I. Margaret and her family page 147& page 95 and Angus's family on page 256. You should be able to get the book at your local library or on inter-library loan. If you cannot get the info let me know and I'll try to copy what I have. Neil Sutherland

Hello there,

Do you know the maiden name of Jane's mother? I can't make it out on her death record.

I can send you an invitation to a website called "The Piper MacNeils" at Myfamily.com if you would like. It is for MacNeil family research for families with Nova Scotia and or Barra roots. I can post a family tree on this site for you if you would like.

Vince

Hello there,

Here is what I have on Stephen and family. I may be missing some of the children. How do you connect? Stephen was the son of Michael 'Long Mick' MacNeil and Margaret Elizabeth (MacNeil) MacNeil. Michael 'Long Mick' was the s/o Michael 'Mor' MacNeil and Ann 'Bheag' MacLean and this Michael was the son of Alasdair 'Mor' MacNeil and Catherine MacNeil(I also descend from this couple). Alasdair Mor was the s/o Neil MacNeil and Catherine Gillis of Barra. Neil was the s/o John s/o Neil s/o Lachlaninn MacNeil.

I have the ancestry of all of the wives as well with the exception of the Crofts who were from England.

This would make us cousins.

Vince MacNeil

Name:	Stephen B MacNeil
----------------------------------------
Birth:	18 Feb 1893	Caledonia, CB, NS
Death:	18 Jun 1954	St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay, CB, NS
Burial:	21 Jun 1954	St. Anthony's, Glace Bay, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
Father:	Michael MacNeil 'Long Mick' (1871-1945)
Mother:	Margaret Elizabeth 'Maggie' MacNeil (1874-1946)
Marriage:	9 Feb 1915	St. Anthony's, Dominion, CB, NS
----------------------------------------
Spouse:	Jean Francis Croft
----------------------------------------
Birth:	22 May 1889	Lancashire, England
Death:	29 Apr 1950	St. Joseph's Hospital, Glace Bay, CB, NS
Burial:	2 May 1950	St. Andrew's Cemetery
Father:	John Croft
Mother:	Mary Oniershire?

Children:
----------------------------------------
1 F:	Mary Margaret MacNeil
Birth:	abt 1915
Spouse:	Bernard Joseph 'Bernie' MacDonald
Marriage:	17 Nov 1936	St. Anthony's, Dominion, CB, NS
----------------------------------------
2 M:	John MacNeil
----------------------------------------
3 M:	Michael MacNeil
----------------------------------------
4 F:	Annie MacNeil
Spouse:	William Littlejohn
----------------------------------------
5 F:	Majorie MacNeil
Spouse:	Robert 'Bob' Bulmer
----------------------------------------
6 F:	Jane MacNeil
Spouse:	James Dewear

----------------------------------------
Last Modified:	25 Mar 2009
Created:	1 Oct 2009
Hello there,

I am actually from New Waterford but I don't live there now. I believe this is your family. Can you confirm that? I can say for sure that there was a daughter who married Henry Quinton and that they were from New Waterford. I can also confirm the brother Frank and sister Rita. I don't have any record of Jonny but he could be listed by his middle name or something below. I'm quite cetain this is your family. I can take all of your MacNeil connections back to Barra for you if this is your family.

Vince MacNeil

Name:	Donald Roderick 'Daniel' 'Dan R' MacNeil
----------------------------------------
Birth:	14 Jul 1877	Christmas Island, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
Death:	18 May 1937	New Waterford, CB, NS
Burial:	20 May 1937	Mount Carmel, New Waterford, CB, NS
Occupation:	coal miner
Father:	Donald MacNeil (~1827-)
Mother:	Elizabeth MacNeil (~1834-)
Marriage:	7 Sep 1904	Bridgeport, CB, NS
----------------------------------------
Spouse:	Maggie Flora 'Flora' MacNeil
----------------------------------------
Birth:	abt 1882
Father:	Donald 'Dan C' MacNeil (~1844-1926)
Mother:	Pennie MacInnis (~1840-)

Children:
----------------------------------------
1 M:	Dan Joseph 'Dannie S' MacNeil
Birth:	13 Sep 1905
----------------------------------------
2 M:	Francis 'Frank' MacNeil
Birth:	28 Oct 1906
----------------------------------------
3 F:	Mary MacNeil
Birth:	Sep 1908
----------------------------------------
4 M:	Charles MacNeil
Birth:	Sep 1909
----------------------------------------
5 F:	Daughter MacNeil
Spouse:	Henry Quinton
----------------------------------------
6 F:	Daughter MacNeil
Spouse:	Collie MacDonald
----------------------------------------
7 F:	Rita MacNeil
----------------------------------------
8 F:	Dorothy MacNeil
----------------------------------------
9 F:	Cleutus MacNeil
----------------------------------------
10 M:	Barnie MacNeil
----------------------------------------
11 M:	Walter MacNeil
----------------------------------------
12 M:	George MacNeil

Notes for Donald Roderick 'Daniel' 'Dan R' MacNeil
Lived at 22 Thompson Street at the time of death.
Hi: I think I can help you connect here. I am Micheal's Grandson Scott. John Francis is my father and he passed on in July of 1999 in Naples Fla.
My Aunt Margaret is 96 now and does live in NY.
I'm not a family expert, but know several cousins who know a lot more than I do.
I'm 47, and the youngest of the lot.
Michael was 90 when I was born in 1961, I do remember him.
Feel free to email me and put Scott MacNeil in the subject so I don't delete it by accident.
adoorsfan@hotmail.com I live in Massachusetts.

Vincent, my father is Richard Edward Looney, son of Donald and Catherine Patricia Looney. Uncle Donald and James "Jimmy" died in the 80's and 90's. Uncle Donald had five or six children. and Jimmy had one, I think his name is Patrick.
My father married Ruth Miller in 1956. They had six children and divorced in 1972. After the divorce we didn't see too much of the MacNeils. Once my grandparents died, we lost track altogether. So, this project has really allowed my siblings and I to piece together a part of our history that was displaced in 1972.

Ha ha Vincent. All of these MacNeils get confusing :) Thank you, thank you!!
Yes, that's the same Margaret Oberly, we call her Margaret, not Mary.
I would love to join your website. Do I need a login?

How do contact my cousin (Joseph's granddaughter)? Is she a member of your site?

So are we still cousins?

HEather

Vince, thank you so much for responding to me, but I'm confused. My great grandfather, Michael, couldn't be Michael Mor MacNeil because you said he married Mary Ann in 1873; the birth dates wouldn't correspond.

I have Michael as being born about 1870 and MaryAnn about 1875. Their marriage would be around 1900. Their first son, Donald, my grandfather, was either born in 1901 or 1904. The US census' state that Mary Ann and Donald immigrated to Boston in 1902 from Canada. I haven't been able to find Donald's birth record in Nova Scotia. Donald is listed as being born in 1904, but that doesn't correspond with immigration records. Before he died, Donald said his family was from the Glace Bay/Boisdale area.

I'm sure we have some connection to the MacKinnon family. My grandfather's address book lists MacKinnon cousins in Halifax in the 1950's to 1970's. I'm not sure if they were on my grandfather or grandmother's side, however.

Donald has only one living sibling, Margaret MacNeil Oberly. I'm sending her a letter today to ask for more information. She's in her late 90's though, so not sure what she can give me.

I found it very interesting what you said about the genetic uniqueness of the Barra MacNeils. If not related to Neil and the Nine, who would we be related to then? I have read before about a mix of Viking, Angle and Pict blood.

By the way, I have very old photos (probably about late 1800's or maybe 1900) of MacNeil men in the mines. There are no names on the pictures. Did a lot of the MacNeils work in mining?

Hope you had a nice Easter. You're a saint for helping us with this, Vince. My daughter had a heritage project for her school this year. That started us on the quest to discover our ancestry. It's been an amazing journey. I am completely fascinated with tracing our roots and feel like I'm preserving our history for future generations.

Heather

Hello Heather,
Sorry about that. The Michael I gave you the information on was the uncle of your Michael (brother of your Donald). I got them mixed up because he also married a Mary MacNeil. Your Michael was the son of Donald s/o John s/o Angus.
Now, your Donald was bapt on Jan 30, 1822 and his parents were from Brebheig, Barra at this time. Your Donald married Margaret "Peggy" MacNeil . She was the d/o James s/o Hector s/o James s/o Alexander s/o Roderick Laird of Barra. So you have a Chiefly line there. I am related to you this way because I also descend from the Hector I just listed. They settled at Big Bank Boularderie. Your Michael married Mary Ann MacNeil (Angus s/o James s/o Rory s/o Angus) MacNeil of Gannon Road in North Sydney. They settled at Somerville Mass.
The Margaret MacNeil Oberly you refer to would be Mary Margaret MacNeil Oberly d/o Michael. She married Jack Oberle. Is that correct? She was born in 1911?
So your grandfather was Donald MacNeil who married Catherine Looney? Three children: Donald, James, and Richard? One of these would be your father?
Your grandfather Donald had a brother named Joseph Alexander "Alex" who married Mary Ann Morrison. They had a daughter Rita Katherine who married John Martin. Their daughter Katherine has done a lot of work on your family history and it is her that you should contact.
I think I got it correct this time!

Vince MacNeil

Hello Sherri,
NS vital stats are now on-line for Nova Scotia https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/ I found the death record for a daughter of Hector MacNeil and Margaret MacIsaac. I believe they lived at New Victoria. I didn't record the death record so I am doing this from memory.
Based on this Hector was born at Boisdale Cape Breton. I believe that there is a good chance that this Hector MacNeil below is the one you are looking for:

Name:	Michael MacNeil
----------------------------------------
Birth:	abt 1856	Beaver Cove, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
Religion:	Roman Catholic
Father:	Malcolm "Calum Mor a' Mhuilinn" MacNeil (~1809-~1885)
Mother:	Mary MacKinnon (~1819-)
Marriage:	abt 1882
----------------------------------------
Spouse:	Ann "Annie" MacDougall
----------------------------------------
Birth:	2 Feb 1857	Christmas Island, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
Father:	John "Larry" MacDougall (~1821-)
Mother:	Sarah MacNeil (~1828-)

Children:
----------------------------------------
1 M:	Malcolm MacNeil
Birth:	abt 1883
Spouse:	Catherine Lucy MacKinnon
----------------------------------------
2 F:	Sarah MacNeil
Birth:	abt 1885
Spouse:	James Fahey
----------------------------------------
3 M:	Stephen MacNeil
Birth:	abt 1889
Spouse:	Florence MacMullin
Marriage:	19 Nov 1912	Reserve, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia
----------------------------------------
4 M:	Alex Francis MacNeil
Birth:	abt 1891
Spouse:	Maryann MacMullin
----------------------------------------
5 M:	Hector MacNeil
Birth:	abt 1896

----------------------------------------
Last Modified:	11 Mar 2004
Created:	13 Apr 2007

All I know about this Hector is that he settled near New Waterford. New Victoria is between New Waterford and Sydney. I went to elementary school in New Victoria. If I am correct then your Hector MacNeil would be the s/o Michael s/o Malcolm s/o John s/o Hector s/o John s/o Rory the Piper MacNeil. I am a descendant of Rory Piper MacNeil through his grandson Malcolm.

Vince MacNeil

Hi Jacqueline,
I have a feeling that this Frank who died at Bible Hill is your man. The informant was James MacNeil and you have discovered that there was a James in the family. If you look at the death record you will see that Frank was listed as Frank "Person" MacNeil or McNeil. That is a mispelling of the family nickname which was Pearson. These MacNeils were supposed to be from a place on Barra called Pearson. This is likely untrue, they were likely MacPhersons who became MacNeils. Some members of this family went by MacPherson and some by MacNeil. Pherson was likely their ancestor and it became their nickname (eventually their surname in some cases). The Pearson MacNeils were baptized as MacPhersons in the Barra church records.
This Frank was from Cape Breton and born May 20, 1868. This is close to the birthdate that you have for your Frank. FYI, if you got his birthdate off of 1901 it is likely off a bit as many of the birthdates are wrong on this census.

Vince

Hello there,
I believe that Paul Humphrey MacNeil married Marion N McNab at Calument, Michigan on June 16, 1908. Paul was listed as 25 and born in Chicago, Illinois. Marion was 21 and born at Calumet. Both were residents of Calument at the time of marriage. Paul was listed as the son of Ambrose MacNeil and Elizabeth Binns. I believe this would be Roderick Ambrose MacNeil.

Vince

Brevig (Barra) MacNeils settled in Vernon River, PEI

I’ve read some on-line references to a Brevig line of MacNeills who emigrated from Barra to Prince Edward Island and may have settled at Vernon River. As I have traced my roots to MacNeils in Vernon River, I’d really like to make a connection.

If anyone could provide a pointer to information on this family or any links to the family described below I would be very grateful.

I have traced my tree back to

Galien Mcneil (d. ~1863 Vernon River, PEI)
m. Catherine UNKNOWN
Children:
James McNeil (b. BEF 1816)
Roderick McNeil (b. ABT 1816)

I don’t know anything about James, but, do know about Roderick:

Roderick McNeil (b. ~1816 Scotland?, d. 1883 St. Peters Bay, PEI)
m. 1844 Euphemia McMullan/McMillan

Children born on PEI and baptized at St Joachim RC Church in Vernon River):
Michael McNeil (b. 1847)
Galean McNeil (b. 1848)
Rachel McNeil (b. 1849)
Joseph McNeil (b. 1852)
Catherine McNeil (b. 1854)
Alexander Roderick McNeil (b. 1856)
Mary Ellen McNeil (b. 1858)
Ronald James McNeil (b. 1862)

Thank you,
John Pickett
Rockaway, NJ, USA
