The “Lost” Pensions: Settled Accounts of the Act of 6 April 1838
By Craig R. Scott, C.G.R.S.
Willow Bend Books © 1996
-------------
p206
MADING, Daniel, c/o, Jackson, Tenn., 113, #1448

The Act of 6 April 1838

Chap. LVI – An Act directing the transfer of money remaining unclaimed by certain pensioners, and authorizing the payment of the same at the Treasury of the United States.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That all money which has been, or may hereafter be, transmitted to the agents for paying pensions, which may have remained or may hereafter remain, in the hands of said agents unclaimed by any pensioner or pensioners for the term of eight months after the same may have or may become due and payable shall be transferred to the Treasury of the United States; and that all pensions unclaimed, as aforesaid, shall be thereafter payable only at the Treasury of the United States, and out of any money not otherwise appropriated,

-	The Public States at Large of the United Stares of America, From the Organizations of the Government in America, From the Organizations of the Government in 1789, to March 3, 1845, Volume 5.

Each entry contains the name of the individual, the pension office, the box at the National Archives in which the payment is contained, and the account number. The use of the words “card” and “slip” indicated that the pension payment voucher itself is not located in this series. Usually these placeholders indicate that the records were checked out and never returned.

There are multiple entries for many pensioners. This is especially true for widows pensions that are included in this series. It is important to examine all of the documents associated with each pensioner.

HOW TO OBTAIN COPIES OF RECORDS
NARA – it was $10 when this book was written, lol.

a/o = administrator of
c/o = children of
e/o = executor of
g/o = guardian of
h/o – heir of
s/o = sister of
w/o = widow of
V# = Voucher number
# = account number
#F = folder number
- = info not provided

Daniel Mading - TN in 1834

Hi!
I am trying to track down a Daniel MAIDEN who married Juney LEHEW in Shenandoah County in 1787. I found a Daniel MADING who lived in Nashville in 1834 and was moving to Brownsville, per his pension record for fighting the Indians. Unfortunately it doesn't say much more than where he lived, that he was wounded and had a family.

I'm hoping he might be my Daniel's son. Is anyone familar with this family? Thanks for your help

Julie
sunnydaze1@hotmail.com

calling all descendants of Rawley or Raleigh Madding (1789-1855) !

Hello Madding/Roberson cousins,
The grave marker of Rawley Madding (1785-1855) was recently discovered in an overgrown, abandoned cemetery in the Bailey Springs area near Florence, Alabama. Rawley was born in Pittsylvania Co. VA, served in the War of 1812 and moved to Maury Co. in the 1820s where he lived until his death. He had 19 living children at the time of his death through marriages to Sally Mays and Sally Bridgeman. Many of these children ended up in N. AL, W. TN and W. KY including my own 3rd grandmother Anne T. Madding Roberson (wife of Wm. "Billy" Roberson) and many descendants lived (or still live) in the Obion Chapel area between Troy and Hornbeak, with other groups in Lake Co., Fulton Co. KY etc... A young Eagle Scout candidate, Davis Faulkner and his family, friends etc.. in the Florence, AL area are cleaning up, refencing, marking and preserving the cemetery and are planning to hold a dedication ceremony this Memorial Day. They are also looking for funds to help in the restoration of the cemetery (particularly refencing). Please contact me if you are interested in this project. Attached is a photo of Rawley's marker (long thought to have been buried in Maury Co. in an unmarked grave). This is a great project and they have already obtained historic cemetery designation from the State of Alabama. Only about 4 graves are still marked in this cemetery after 160 or so hard years! Help preserve our ancestor's memory for future generations!
I have a small packet of info that I can snail mail if interested.
This link will also take you to my posted info at the rootsweb world connect project:
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=dajones&I11.x=...
Thanks, David Jones in Richmond, MI, 4th great grandson of Rawley and Sally Mays Madding
In his 1873 will he left his estate to his "colored" servants, most going to Wm Madding, col'd.)

Note: I am not connected with the Madding family. My interest in them is via their connections to the Dodson line & old Pittsylvania Co. families in general.

There are five Madding wills filed in Pittsylvania Co., VA.

It's sad that I have never found a Madding cemetery here.

I am trying to trace our roots back to County Cork, Ireland. My great grandfather was Noah Madden born in 1863. His father was Joel Madden. I'd like to know Joel's parent's names and their place of birth. I'm going to Ireland next year and I'd like to visit the place where our Maddens came from.
Thanks for any information.
