Hello Mari
It would be great if we could arrange to meet up locally!
Your ancestor Frances Madeley née Smith was born in Sutton on the Hill, Derbyshire, in 1803, but I don't know anything about her ancestors. She married William Madeley (of Yoxall) in Sutton in 1834. William's ancestors were farmers in Yoxall from 1664; prior to that they were in Doveridge, Derbyshire.
That's all close to where I live, so I'd be happy to show you round. Give me a call on 0771 261 4175 when you know when you're able to get here. Lesley lives nearby as well.

Stephen

PS: I don't think there's any connection to Gnosall.

Hello Madeley Family,
I've been in touch with some of you before, I think (Lesley and Stephen?).
As it happens, I'm in England at the moment and may have a day when I could go up to Staffordshire and look around. Thought I would head to Gnosall and Yoxall, as that is where I gather (with some help from Lesley, Stephen and others and the 1851 and 61 census recordings) my Madeley family originated. I thought I'd try to take a peak at the Parish records of St. Lawrence Church in Gnosall. I've only got a day, but if there is information I can gather for you, I would be willing to try to fit it in. One person I'm trying to find out more about is the spouse of one of the William Madeleys (who seem to be legion). Her name was Frances and she was born in Sutton, Derbyshire in about 1803. If anyone knows more about her, that would be most helpful.
Thanks,
Mari

Hello. I have recently been passed a very large autograph book containing hundreds of signatures of the great and the good. In the course of researching the names, I came across your request for information about Frederick Madeley. He has signed this book giving his address as OX Hill, Handsworth. Its a strange book as it contains the signatures of royalty, industrialists, politicians etc. There is a column on the right hand side that gives the number of copies of an unknown book which has been ordered by the signee! I will keep on researching to unravel the mystery. My email address is crandaw@btinternet.com. Best wishes Andrew

Hi Rita,

I'm not sure. My father's name is Lenord Percy Madeley and his father Percy Ampflet Madeley. He was one of nine children of Herbert Madeley, who died in 1910 and lived in Aston. My family line seems to go from back to Walsall, Wednesbury and then back to Salop (Wem and Cheswardine) in the 16th-18th century. My grandfather was the only one to live in Hall Green (Redstone Farm Rd - its near the golf club). His brothers and sisters lived in other districts on Birmingham between 1890- 1980.
Let me know if you need any other information.

Kind Regards
Graham Madeley

Madeleys

I am presently researching my husband’s family in Shropshire. The family name is Madeley. We have traced them back to a John Madeley and Charlotte Woodcock who married in Shawbury in 1827. As part of my normal procedure in such cases, I try to trace the family through appropriate census and pick up possible cousins, siblings and such. At present I am reviewing the 1851 and 1861 census for Shawbury and it is loaded with Madeleys. For each of the following,I have a photocopy of the actual census page.
!851 – Wem – Mary Madeley – age 60 – widow – born Wem
Wem – Thomas Madeley – 71 – Married – Wem – also wife and daughter
Wem – Mary Madeley – 27(?) – single – Wem – in workhouse
Northwood – William Madeley – 57 – Hamner – wife and 7 children 18 – 29
Northwood – Alfred Madeley – 1 – Wem –living in Brayne household next to above – condition bastard
Telstock – Thomas Madeley – 27 – Whitchurch – wife and child
Telstock – Thomas Madeley – 26 – Whitchurch – wife and child
Telstock – Thomas Madeley – 70 – Tight field(sp?) – wife
Telstock- Hannah Madeley – 78 – Wem – livng with gdaughter and her child
Ash Parva(sp?) – Eliza Madeley – 26 – servant – Whitchurch
Ash Magna – William Madeley – 24 – servant – Whitchurch
Alkington – Thomas Madeley – 18 – servant – Shrewsbury
Dodington – Elizabeth Madley – 46 – widow – C???a – with daughter, Daughter in law and grand daughter
Dodington – Eliza Madeley – 13 – servant – Wem
Clive – Ellen Madeley – 15 – servant – Acton Reynold – this one is mine***

I am now going through 1861 and will post what I find if you like
the following is a link to my online tree

http://www.tribalpages.com/tribes?userid=cranberry&x=15&...

I am a great-great grandson of George Bell Madeley. I don't have much information on him, except the basics (DOB, DOD etc.) Would LOVE to know where he is buried. My mother, who was his great-grandaughter, died in 1999. Her brother, William Zill Madeley is still alive and lives in Houston. I am bringing my GPS unit to Texas and will go to known cemetaries and get exact coordinates for graves, so if you know where he is buried, let me know.

I have just received a photocopy of the research by Rev Frank Madeley, plus some other items including a fascinating diary by the wife of Rev Frank, the missionary in China. I think this may be of use to you as many seem to be from the areas you mention. Being a Shropshire Madeley it does not help me, but is fascinating to read, if rather disjointed. There are approx 70 pages and probably too poor quality to scan but I can photocopy.

Re: American MADELEYs
I have done a lot of reserch into this Madeley line but still have not found a definite date or port of entry of immigration for George Bell and Hellen Adelane Grant-Madeley.

I have seen it mentioned several times that they immigrated to Texs about 1845. If this is correct, then it is highly likely that the port of entry was Galveston. The next two closest ports of entry would be New Orleans LA and Mobile AL.

Taxes were paid by George Bell Madely in Montgomery county 1846 and his first son (George Grant Madeley) was born in that county on Oct 05 1847.

There are 11 tombstone markers in the Madeley Cemetery of Montg. co. showing the Madeley name and all of them descend from George and Hellen. There are also many other in-law families buried there.

For fifty years, or until 1900, all the Madeley's in TX were descendants of George and Helen. Shortly after 1900 several other lines immigated to Texas from England OR relocated to Texas from othe states, each rooted in England as well.

I am very, very distantly related to these Madeleys :

The firstborn son of George and Hellen (mentioned above) was married to Mary Margaret McCaleb, the daughter of Jesse McCaleb and Darcus Cude. Darcus' mother was Serena Johnson and Serena was my gr-gr-gr-grandfather's sister, making Mary Margaret McCaleb my first cousin thrice removed.

Secondly, another of George and Hellen's sons (John York Madeley Sr) married Francis Louise "Fannie" McCaleb, sister to Mary Margaret. "Fannie" was a triplet.

nate
