Hello! Im trying to trace further back into my materanl grandmother's family.

She (Eileen) was born 1922 - Margaret 1920 & John 1924 were her siblings. Her mother was called Margaret McCormick, father James Madigan - Im trying to find out more about James' parents - Madigan & McCauslin (maiden name).
There are connections to USA, Ireland & Scotland - with three other known siblings to James - Susan, Mary & John. Any advice would be so appreciated. Thank you.

I've never seen a NSW or SA connection with my family so it's unlikely to be the same one. Have you checked the Electoral Rolls for around 1900 to see where they were at that time?

I'm also trying to track Madigans and my gggreatfather was a William Madigan c 1841, his father was a Michael Madigan. William's daughter Mary (my decendant) married a James O'Donnell. William and his family came to south Australia I beleive from the Golburn area NSW.

Madigans in Wisconsin

My gg grandfather, John Madigan, came from Ireland with his brother around 1830, when he was about the age of 13. The brother stayed in Maine, John settled in Wisconsin, married Elizabeth Mulvaney, and had 8 children, including my g grandfather, Michael, in 1850.
Elizabeth died young, around 1863, and John married again, to Ellen or Ella ? and had 8 more children, so it looks like I could be related to just about any Madigan from Wisconsin...
(children's names include David, Ellen, Mary, Ann, Agnes, Francis, Varonica, John, Stephen, Patrick (Henry), Martha, Anna, Arthur, Edwin/Edward, and Paul)

My father was names James Madigan. All the Madigan's in Canada worked for the railroad. I know we immigrated from COunty Cork Ireland. I have not been able to find any info on my grandfather Daniel. I know he married Siscelia Meehan in Montreal and that's all. I know my father often talked about his relatives in New York.

I am not sure if these things will match up but My grandmother who was born in 1925 to Ethel A. Madigan who had brothers and sisters names: Earl, Floyd, Joseph, Preston and Stella. I do not know anything more, I am still looking.

I am not sure if there is any relation but my grandmother was ethel anne (or ann) madigan and she had brothers and sisters. I only know of Earl, Floyd, Jospeh, Preston and Stella though. I have heard there were more and looking for more information. Let me know if you think this matches your stuff.

My husband's late Aunt Martha remembered visiting relatives in Tunkhannock in her youth. Sadly,we know nothing about them. All we do know, from death certificates, is that the first of the line to come to the States was Thomas Joseph Madigan, in about 1870, and his parents were Patrick Madigan and Anne Murray from County LImerick. A cousin passed on a story that he grew up swimming in the Shannon RIver. He married and raised his family here in Ohio and died here.

I did hear from a family historian in Ireland (with no family connection) that there a great many Madigans in County Limerick, and of course, many overlapping names!

hey shannon thanks for getting back to me, you are the only one that has responded to me. i have to get the book, i think i know where it is. i moved to pa for 2 years but just moved back to garden city park and i think it's still here at my inlaws house in the shed. i actually have to re read the ad i put up just so i can remember some of the names. when you get more information let me know.

Looking for info on Thomas John Madigan. Born around 1900 (not sure if US or Ireland, although sister Mary had a brouge). Died around 1956 in NYC area. Was the chief engineer at the NY Ritz-Carlton Hotel in 1940's. Was also a Merchant Marine. In addition to sister Mary (married name - Ruland) had 1-2 brothers named either John/James/Frank. Thanks!

Colleen I was up late last night replying to your post I made one mistake my grandma Nancy(Madigan) Brokaw would be your aunt and my Dad would be your cousin instead. I would still love to hear from you because it looks like you would also be my cousin. Also your father Robert had three sisters including my grandma, they were Patricia Frances and Maragret. My grandma said there was a census mistake with her sister Pat they wrote she was a boy and her name was Francis Patrick. Well I hope to hear from you soon.

Nancy is the mother of seven out of eight surviving children one of which is my dad. Trying to find information on John. I haven't been able to locate the date he arrived in Australia but he married an Irish born girl Catherine O'Donnell here in 1858. His parents were named as Michael Madigan and Honora Mulvihil on his marriage certificate. No idea if they ever came to Australia. I have information on his 8 children and many grandchildren. Anyone who can point me in the right direction please make contact. I've tried the National Archives and Public Record Office of Victoria but don't know where else to look.

Sorry but I have no William Madigan's that I know of in my tree. I do know that John Madigan c1830 Shanagolden married Catherine O'Donnell c1833 Shanagolden in Melbourne in 1858. I haven't yet traced when either one arrived in Australia or who they travelled with. Their children were all born in the vicinity of Carlton and most died close by also.
Do you have a location for any of your Madigan's and O'Donnell's as this might help?
Please let me know if I can provide any further information that might help you as I've managed to track down many family members throught the electoral rolls prior to 1936.

My research indicates the most likely place for a Madigan to emigrate from was 1)Clare 2)Limerick 3)Cork.
There was Thomas Madigan (with spelling variations) living in Hyde Park in 1860 (where my family lived in the 1840's) and in Nicolson in Wyoming County.

In 1880 there were Thomas Madigans' living in and around Scranton. I never could trace a direct connecton between these and my family, but I felt it was too much of a coincidence for so many Madigans to surface close together in these places in PA, not to be related, and or from the same village.

Before 1860 Madigan was a fairly rare name in the US, but became rairly common after that.

Thomas Madigan and family are buried in an around Scranton.

Tankhannock was (and still is) a remote tiny village not really suitable for farming. the early Irish in that area worked in building the Canals and to a lesser extent the early railroads.

Many later moved to the Scranton area due to the jobs with the railroads and the coal mines. Scranton is still fairly Irish to this day. All of my family stayed up there, except for my ggf, who came to NYC for unknown reasons about 1861.

I am afraid that i do not have any information on them.
If you contact the Corofin Geneology Centre,at Corofin Co.Clare.they have all the registers of births,deaths and marriages held there for Co.Clare.
I know that they charge a swall fee for the information.
