Classification: Query
Surnames: Madsen, Lauridsen, Petersen, Jensen, Christensen, Pedersen, Andersen, Overgaard, Larsen,
Caroline Kjerstine Madsen Lauridsen was the sister of my great grandmother. I have recently had her letters (to my great grandmother in USA) translated from Danish to English and would like to share these with interested relatives as well as to find out if my great grandmother's letters back to Denmark may still exist somewhere.
Here is what we know of our Madsen lineage:
Mads Christensen was born 16 October 1805 at Vestervig, Thisted, Denmark. His mother was Anne Kirstine Pedersen and this father was Christen Madsen. On 22 November 1839 he married Christiane Andersen (born 11 October 1806 at Hvidbjerg, Thyholm, Thisted, Denmark; her mother was Karen Pedersen, her father was Anders Overgaard Larsen). They had three children: Caroline Kjerstine Madsen born 17 May 1840 at Vestervig, Jens Peter Madsen born 5 January 1844 at Vestervig, and Kathrine Madsen born 15 June 1850 at Vestervig. The father, Mads Christensen, died 29 April 1862. We have no information on the mother's death.
Youngest child Kathrine Madsen married Jens Hansen (born 8 February 1845 at Erslev, Thisted, Denmark) on 25 May 1876, and in 1884 they emmigrated to the USA with six children from Thygstrup, Thisted, Denmark.
Most of the letters translated to date are correspondence from "Stine", that is, Caroline or Karoline Kjerstine Madsen, to her sister Kathrine, my great grandmother. In letters dated 1900 to 1923 from Ydby, Denmark, Stine gives news that her husband Martin Lauridsen or Lauritsen died 3 September 1904 at age 80 and talks of her children:
Daughter Sine lives in Thisted, her husband works at the lime kiln, she has a boy named Martin
Son Mads Christian or Kristjan (also referred to as Mads Hans) lives in or near Ydby with six children (youngest are twin boys) and wife Klare who is left to take care of the animals while Mads works during the week at the railway station. Mads and family lived a half hour walk away from Stine's house in Oster Heden (?), and took care of her until her death in 1923.
Daughter Marie emmigrated to the USA and is married to a carpenter, letters to be addressed to E. Jensen in Hartford, Connecticut, and they have at least one son.
Daughter Maren also emmigrated to the USA, letters to be addressed to L. Petersen, they had four children by 1911, and a brother had joined Marie and Maren in Hartford, Connecticut.
Daughter Kristine has a daughter Karoline Johanne.
Son Laurits has a German wife and never writes.
It is unlikely that any of the above people are still living, however, if you are connected to any of them or have any information about how I might contact living descendants, I would be very grateful.
