Hi Krystal,
I would love any info you have on the name Mahala. I have not worked lately on this surname because I could research only to a certain point and it is as if the family just appeared in Ashe Co. NC. I do not find Mahala surname anywhere else either. So any info you have on the origin of the name will help. I am thinking the name was maybe shorten from something else or a combination of names.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Chris Taylor

There are Mahalas that live in Lexington North Carolina and Kernersville North Carolina. My grandfather was James Henry Mahala and his father was named Lee Mahala. I think Lee had a sister by the name and same spelling of Susannah. My father is Ward Holton Mahala and he currently resides in Kernersville. I am reachable by email at goshengourmet@hotmail.com should you have questions or wish to converse. Hope this has been helpful.

Hi,
Do you remember where you found this info as to the orgin of the Mahala name? I have searched for several years now on the Mahala line in Ashe Co. NC. I have it traced back so far and it stops. I thought the info you have on the orgin of the name might give me a clue as to where the Mahala family originally came from.

Thanks for your help.
Chris Sluder Taylor

HI MARCEY. I'M INTERESTED IN KNOWING IF YOU ARE FROM PENNSYLVANIA. AS I LOOK INTO MY FAMILY IT IS BECOMING APPARENT THAT THEY ALL STARTED IN THE SAME PLACE BUT WHEN THEY GOT OVER HERE THEY BEGAN TO SPELL THE NAME ALL KINDS OF WAYS. MIHALO IS ONE OF THE MORE RARE WAYS TO SPELL IT. I KNOW OF SOME NEAR PITTSBURG THAT MY FATHER THOUGHT WE MIGHT BE RELATED TO. I HAVE BEEN OUT TO PITTSBURG FOR MEETINGS, LOOKED IN THE PHONE BOOK, BUT NEVER HAD THE NERVE TO CALL. I GUESS I'M NOT SURE HOW THESE PEOPLE WOULD REACT TO A STRANGER CALLING AND ASKING IF THEY WERE THEIR RELATIVES. THANKS. CHRIS

Almost forgot--to mention, the word Mahala is a form of the Mahla, a 2-syllable girl's name of Hebrew origin, it means: Marrow; tenderness. Mahala, a 3-syllable girl's name of Hebrew origin, means: tenderness. It doesn't mean that its a Jewish name, it means that it more likely adopted by the Slavs as a name for a pasty, or thin person.

Mahala's in NC

I am interested in any info you have on the Mahala family. I am looking for Harriet Elizabeth Mahaley/Mahala m. Johathan James Sluder in 1810 in Rowan Co. NC.

Jonathan and Elizabeth's son, John m. Susannah Mahala. I have her birthdate abt. 1807 in NC, but do not know what part of NC. John and Susannah moved to Ashe Co about 1840-1850. I found John and Susannah as well as his parents, Jonathan James and Harriett Elizabeth in the 1870 Ashe Co. census as living next door.

I have a lot of info on the Sluders, but I do not have any connection to the Mahaley/Mahala women. I also can use help with current Mahala line in the area of Johnson Co. TN, Ashe Co., NC or the border counties of VA. I will be glad to share any info you need.
Thanks,
Chris Sluder Taylor
rftaylor@avana.net

Susannah Mahala or any Mahala surnames

I am trying to connect several folks with the surname of Mahala. I have not been able to get a good line on this name. There are several Mahala descendents that still live in Ashe Co. (Creston) NC. I have not been able to connect Susannah Mahala to these folks. Susannah Mahala m. John Sluder (marriage may have been in Rowan or Buncombe Co. NC) They are shown in Ashe Co. 1850 Census with the correct children and correct ages. Any info on any Mahala line would be helpful. There are very few with this surname on the web. I will be happy to share what I have on this line.
Thanks,
Chris

Chris, I am also looking for the Mahala's. I know that one of the Mahala line married a Sluder, I just don't remember which one. Some of the Mahala's I am looking for are: Jonah, Jesse James, Jesse Calloway Mahala, and Caleb. I have some info, but not enough. I have been collecting info on this family for about a month, and need to put all my notes together. If I run across what you are looking for, I'll send it to you. You can mail me at lmills@cnw.com. Linda
