WEST BRANCH, Iowa - Joseph Patrick Maher, 73, died Monday, February 23, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City due to complications from surgery.
Service at the St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church, West Branch. Burial will be held at the West Branch Cemetery.
Visitation at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, West Branch.
‘Pat’ was born on March 17, 1935, near Cedar Bluff, the son of James R. and Martha Malake Maher. He married Leone 'Polly' Gruwell on August 31, 1963, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Tipton.
He was a graduate of Tipton High School in 1954.
He served with the United State Army Airborne from 1957-59 where he was stationed in Germany and Lebanon.
In his early years he had worked on the family farm, he later worked in commercial and residential construction and continued his career in construction/carpentry with the University of Iowa for 24 1/2 years retiring in 1998.
He was a member of St. Bernadette’s Catholic Church and the Carpenters Local Union in Iowa City.
He enjoyed the outdoors, metal detecting and most importantly his family and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Polly Maher of West Branch; three daughters, Teresa Kober and husband, Kris, Rhonda Shultz and husband, David, and Patricia Harpole and husband, Gene, all of West Branch; a son, Jeffrey Maher of West Branch; seven grandchildren, Joseph Maher, Max and Alice Kober, Brandon Shultz, Madison, Gabe and Katie Harpole; a brother, Donald Maher and wife, Jean, of Tipton; and a sister, Linda Paulson and husband, Dave, of Carroll.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Maher, and a sister, Dorothy Voparil.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Wilma G. Maher, 93, of Muscatine, died Wednesday, December 6, 2006, at Lutheran Homes.
Service at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Reverend Paul Appel of the Ss. Mary and Mathias Parish will officiate. Casket bearers will be Mark Fenner, Jon Sulzberger, Dennis Keck, Jeremey Dalbey, William Maher, Nyles Fenner, Mike Maher, Joe Maher, Glenn Christensen, Jay Christensen, Stuart Shoemaker, and Jim Haines. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Homes for the security system at the home.
Wilma was born on September 3, 1913, in Muscatine, the daughter of Levi P. and Emma Smith Odell. She married Joseph Glenn Maher on April 10, 1932, in Muscatine. He preceded her in death on August 16, 1971.
She was a member of the St. Mathias Church and the VFW Auxiliary.
She loved to play the piano and enjoyed her music. She also enjoyed spending time with her 'Ding-A-Ling' sisters. She enjoyed painting, crocheting and loved her chocolates.
Survivors include three sons, Thomas Maher and wife, Karen, of Modesto, California, Joseph G. Funeral Mass at the St. Mathias Church. The Rev. Jason K. Crossen will officiate. Pallbearers will be Ron Kiser, R. L. Casini, Christopher Kiser, Jonathan Kiser, Andrew Kiser, Eric Bartelt, Ralph 'Beanie' Bartelt, and Neil Bartelt. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Mr. Maher was born June 5, 1911, in Muscatine, the son of Thomas F. and Margaret Brossart Maher. He married Sylvia Ethel Bartelt Sept. 30, 1934, in Muscatine. She preceded him in death on June 22, 1998.
He was a member of the St. Mathias Church.
Mr. Maher worked as a firefighter for the city of Muscatine, a bookkeeper for Northern Gravel and retired from accounting for HON Industries. He also served as Treasurer of the Port City Credit Union for many years.
He is survived by one daughter, Kathleen Casini and her husband, R. L. of Muscatine; one son-in-law, Ron Kiser of Muscatine; six grandchildren, Christopher Kiser and his wife, Jeanette, of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Elizabeth Shapiro and her husband, Michael, of Evanston, Illinois, Jonathan Kiser of Muscatine, Andrew Kiser of Ft. Collins, Colorado, Jason Casini and his wife, Karina, of Des Moines, and Susan Morford and her husband, John, of Muscatine; four great-grandchildren, Colin Kiser, Patrick Shapiro, Gabrielle Casini, and Joseph Morford; one brother-in-law, Ed Bartelt and his wife, Barbara, of Muscatine; several nieces and nephews; and also great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, Leonard James Maher in infancy, one daughter, Patricia Ann Kiser on Sept. 26, 1998, one sister, and four brothers.

Maxine D. Maher, 91, died Wednesday, Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Bickford Cottage, Iowa City, where she had lived for more than five years. She had celebrated her 91st birthday one month previous.
The Rev. Dennis Martin will officiate. Burial will be at the West Branch Cemetery.
Mrs. Maher was born March 12, 1915, on a farm south of Cumberland, Iowa, the daughter of Roy Mills and Ora Hayes Mills. She married Jack P. Maher in 1936 in Atlantic. He preceded her in death.
She attended country school near Cumberland and business college in Corning, Iowa in the 1930s.
She and her husband had four children during and after World War II and settled in Atlantic, where he held positions in advertising with the Atlantic News-Telegraph and radio station KJAN and she trained as a tailor for Metcalf's Men's Wear. Her husband also worked as a postal employee.
She and her husband purchased the West Branch Times in the fall of 1959 and moved to West Branch just in time to open the new West Branch High School building on N. Oliphant Street. She and her husband were co-publishers of the West Branch Times. She was also the former mayor of West Branch.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Z. Maher of Ashland, Ore.; two sons, Daniel R. Maher of Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Tom Maher of Bethesda, Md.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her second son, Timothy M. Maher.
