Mai family from Trego County, Kansas

My search on this family has lead me to a dead stop at my great great grandparents that lived and as far as I know passed away in the Wakeeney area. My great grandmother was Marie Katherine Mai married to a Henry Wegele in Milberger. Her parents were George Jacob Mai and Katherina Elizabeth Schnieder both from Russia and this is all the info I have. They immigrated to the US in 1903 with at least one child. Their children were Amelia, Olinda, Henry, Maria Katharina, Friedrich Jacob, Herman, and Lydia. Olinda was married to August Mai and I believe Lydia died before 1920 cause she is not listed on that census but would have only been 10-11 years old. If there is anyone out there that could help me with any more information it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Maybe I am taking a long shot that you still get on this site but I will give a try. I noticed that on one of your messages your Mai family went to Kansas. I am looking for George Jacob Mai and his wife Katherina Elizabeth Schneider immigrating from Russia in 1903 with at least one child. They lived in the Wakeeney, Trego County, Kansas area. My great grandmother was Marie Katherine who married Henry Wegele. I am stuck at both George and Katherina. I have possibilities of their parents but that is all I have not been able to find them on any passenger lists either. Please let me know if you have anything. Thank you for your time.

Alicia Berens

The time period for both Sophie's appears to be about correct.

The only documentation I found on Sophie was on her Father's death certificate. The certificate listed his children and a little note on each one.

For Sophie, there was a mention she married a fellow by the name of Weber. This Mai family were from the Lohmen, Saxony area (close to Dresden) and I notice your Sophie was married around Frankfurt.

I know people re-married and moved around but I am not sure if we can tie the 2 Sophie's as being the same.

For now,

Ron

My father's great-great grandmother was Sophie Mai. I wonder if this might be the last child you listed. She married Johann Michel Kohlenberger (I have not found their marraige record) in Germany, probably about 1858. They had 4 children:
1. Mathaeus, born 4/6/1860
2. Katharina Magdalena, born 9/27/1862
3. Sofia, born 5/27/1864
4. Johann Wilhelm, born 5/25/1866

I have a document from a church in Biebergemund, Germany, documenting these births. I'd love to know if you have documentation/records for Sophie Mai.
Johann Wilhelm is my father's grandfather.

My G_G_Grandfather was named Phillip,a businessman married to a Soldan. They lived in a castle. My uncle was married to a baroness. He did not have the "baron title" My grandfather Conrad came to New York about 1866. His wife Babetta(Barbara)Sherer came later with a son Frank. My Aunt says he came through Canada, but a written history says he came to NY. Do you have ANY type of info that could enlighten me?
Thank you
Charlotte

My relatives are the Mai family from Bergamo. John Mai's birth name was Giovanni Mai. He came to the United States in 1920 and settled in the Upper Pennisula of Michigan. He had three daughters, one of who is my mother. A sister wrote on occassion but lost contact after my grandfather died. Other family names are Romeli and Taccolini. If you have any information about these surnames it would be much appreciated.

Hi, I was just researching through google and I bumped into your message. My name is Maresa Cossolini (Mariateresa actually, I am from Bergamo, but I'm living in Milan at the moment. I think the Giovanni Cossolini you are talking about was my great great uncle. My father names was Giovanni Cossolini as well and he got the name of his uncle Giovanni, who emigrated to the States I don't know exactly when. When I was a child, in the sixties he came to visit us in Italy, he had a daughter, Ida who died when he was visiting us. I don't remember him well, but I clearly remember the sadness of the fact. If you need some other information about the family just contact me at my mail
address (marhesa@fastwebnet.it)
maresa

Kenneth, here is what I have on George Mai, Edward Mai. George was born in Buffalo, NY to John and Katherine Mai. John came over from Germany in 1863 and Katherine in 1854. John's b-day is Jan 1845 and Katherine's is May 1852. My great grandpa is George and is buried in Tonawanda, New York. George was married several times, he had Edward with Ernestine (my great grandmother). They also had a daughter, Dorothy. According to my Great Aunt (it's a very long story, but I'll tell it to you some time), when great grandpa passed away, Edward did not come to his funeral. Please email me at dreamstor@yahoo.com for more information as I have alot on my great grandpa George Mai and his family.

I was just able to fing the ship my Antonia came to the US on. I was told by an Italian researcher that ItaliAN woman traveled under their maiden name. I gave is a try, but I used another form of the name "Maj" I know for a fact this version was also used in Bergamo for the Mai family, but I had never tried it. I not only found Antonia, but three of her children that traveled with her also traveled under her maiden name....
If your Giovanni Baptiste Mai came over with his parents as a child, try searching for him with his mother's maiden name. Also try the variation "Maj"
By finding the ships manifest, I was able to confirm my Mai/Maj family is from the small village, Schilpario, in the province of Bergamo, Itlay.
He married by grandmother, Pauline Cecilia Romeli in 1928. My grandmother came over to the US when she was little. My mother, Antoinette Louise Mai married my father, David Norman Fairbanks.

Thats all I know for now.
I came across this thread entirely by accident - my maiden name was Cossolini and I was doing a search on some other things (not genealogy related), and found this posting.

I did some extensive research about eight years ago on the Cossolini family. I know nothing of the Mai family, but your information matches up to the following:

Giovanni (John) Benedetto Cossolini
married to Antonette ???

They had six children...
Mary R. (no spouse?)
Firmina E. (m. Daniel Hannagan)
Jesamine (?) (m. Charles Paulsen)
John Baptiste (MY GRANDFATHER)(m. Mary Cadamuro)
Josephine (m. Louis Snyder)
Antonette P. (m. Walter O'Connor)

If you want to exchange information, please feel free to contact me, as this is a branch in my tree that has a lot of branches that are "missing".

Are you a Paulsen or a Snyder? This would surely make us cousins...

S. (Cossolini) Niedzwiecki

I understand what you mean abou the brickwall. I know very little form what my father has told me. His grandmother was a Mai. He knows from living with her as a youth about her home town. His father too was from Bergamo. I found info on family search.org. Very little info. My father remembers a relative that would visit named Gilbert Mai.He was a Roman Catholic priest. My fathers tells me that when ever he would ask who certain people were at the family gatherings, the answer would always be, "that is your cousin" Needless to say, he had many cousins and really never knew how they were actually related! In the 1900 census there is an Antonio Mai living in the home. My father does not recall this person, the census says the relation is "cousin" (His mothers name was Antoniae Mai, I am thinking it could be her brother)
I did meet a man who has a website that is really good at helping with Italian anscestors, conigliofamily.com I took a class that the LDS church offered to the public, Gaetano Coniglio gave the class. You may have some luck by reading up on his tips.

Hello,
My gr grandmother was Antoniae Mai from the same area. She came the US abt 1890. She was married to John Cossolini from the same area. The settled in Hoboken,NJ and spent their lives their. I am told by my father, she is a cousin of the famous Cardinal Angelo Mai from Schilipario, Bergamo.(you can read about him in a google search) I know one of her daughters was baptized in that town at St. Antonii church in 1891. do you have any more information on the family from Bergamo? She did have a son named John Baptist Cossolini. I believe she may have had another son who died prior to his birth. Mai is a popular name in the area, I am told.

His daughter, Fannie is my grandmother who died about 5 years ago in New Jersey at the ago of 97. My father Charles Stern is one of her 2 sons.
Hope this is useful and I would appreciate any information you could provide, as well as knowing more about you and your family.
My name is Lauren Stern ( Kedem).
