I am researching Katrina Mains Gaarde (b. Denmark, lived 1865-1919) immigrated to Clinton, Iowa in 1880, married Nels Gaarde. Can't find anything on the "Mains" surname in Denmark. What alternate spellings should I be looking for?

Re: Frank or Arthur Mains, Cherokee

I believe that Arthur Mains is my great-great grandfather who supposedly fathered a few children out of wedlock, even when he was very old. He died in his 90s. His mother was supposedly 100% Cherokee but I don't know her first name nor his father's. I've been looking and haven't found any information that matches. My great-grandmother was born with the name Oriental Mains (they called her Ory) in the mid 1870s. She later changed her first name to Betty. She has a sister named Ollie and five other brothers and sisters who all lived into their late 80s and 90s. My great-grandmother lived to be almost 105 years old and died in 1984 but no one is sure of her year of birth.

Hi, I see over 5 years have passed, but thought I'd try this anyway. I don't have any info about Jesse Mains, just wanted to say that Jesse Mains was the brother of my ggg-grandmother. Her name, as I have it, was Jemima Catherine Mains, married to Milton Thompson Cole. Sounds like I already have the same info you do...also, other brothers of Jesse, and that Henry Mains remarried. Jemima's line went on to Kansas and then to Washington. How about Jesse's?

Help with Millie/Milly/Malinda Angie/Angline/Angeline/Angaline Meenus/Manis/Manes/Mains/Mannis!!

Hi,

I'm trying to track down Millie/Milly/Malinda Angie/Angline/Angeline/Angaline Meenus/Manis/Manes/Mains/Mannis. I have a birth date in TN of Oct 12, 1842. She married George Baine Bristow, had 9 kids, and eventually was buried in Grants Pass, OR.

I've seen the family information for Claibourn L. Manes and Sarah Sampley which lists a daughter named Malinda born about 1844. But sometimes that data shows the birth in Arkansas and one source shows that Malinda marrying a Fox and a Martin (evidently a fan of small furry creatures) but not a Bristow. On the 1880 census it shows her father as being born in TN and her mother in NC.

Can anyone help me confirm whether these Malindas are the same person or provide additional information?

Thanks,
Jeff

Aaron O. & Elizabeth Mains, James H. & Mary F. Van Houten, John V. & Frances C. Cook, George & Mary Worn

Two days ago, while looking for my GGG Grandparents (George A. Worn and Mary J. Worn) graves in Newark, NJ, I found that they are buried in the same family plot along with Aaron O. and Elizabeth Mains. I got this information in person at the cemetery office. They gave me a copies of their records of all the people buried in the plot, burial dates & ages. I looked for the plot but was having trouble finding it and was pressed for time and had to leave. I plan to return next month to find it. (I have several other family there too).
There are a total of 18 people currently in that plot. 3 were removed to either another plot or another cemetery.

Besides George & Mary Worn (d; 1881 & 1899) and Aaron O. & Elizabeth Mains (d; 1887 & 1886), these are the adults in the plot: Mary F. Van Houten d:1909, James H. Van Houten d:1914, Virginia Mains d:1927, Abner R. Mains d:1932, Elizabeth Mains d:1936, Edna (Grace) Mains d:1963

There are also 8 children currently in the plot ranging in age from 11 months to 4 years old.

The plot was purchased by Aaron Mains & James H. Van Houten in 1865.

There was also a John V. Cook & Frances C. Cook in the plot but they were moved to another plot in the cemetery.

If you need me to elaborate on any of this info, please let me know.
I see that the Van Houtens are Elizabeth Mains family, but I am unable to connect the Worns with any of them. Anyone familiar with them?

I will be heading back to the cemetery next month when I have more time to find and view the plot, hoping any inscriptions may help.
I need to add some important information here.

I still know nothing more about Frank (or Arthur) Mains, a Cherokee.

Some further information about Grace - her maiden name was Poe. (She had a younger sister, Noval or Novalena Poe). She did not marry Frank Mains, but they had one child, Mary Mildred Mains (who is also found under Mildred Jobe and Mary Meredith).

Grace married several times after having her daughter (my grandmother). She married Albert Jobe, then Harry Petty, then Claude (?) Bayers or Beyers.

If anyone has ANY information on any of the above people, especially Mains, PLEASE let me know. I've run into a total dead-end on our Indian Mains man.

Frank or Arthur Mains, Cherokee

In my ancestry research, this surname is the hardest for me to locate.

My grandmother (Mildred Mains) was born of a Cherokee Indian named Frank (or Arthur?) Mains and Grace D. Bayers. The family knows little else about Frank Mains. My grandmother was born in 1915 and was adopted by a Jobe family (my great-grandmother married a Jobe and my grandmother was raised as a Jobe). She spent her life in Indiana and Ohio. Other names she used: Mary Mildred Mains, Mildred Jobe, Mary Neukam.

If anything rings a bell with anyone about this Frank (or maybe Arthur?) Mains, a Cherokee, I'd be very interested.

Kiskaden. You have been emailing with my mom Edith Lenzi 2001 but back then we didn't have much information but now the sky is falling. Have you heard of the Barton Collection manuscript of northern Kentucky Families? I have been reading this and I believe we are related through the Blacks family and more. My GGGrandmother was Sarah Francis Kiskaden and her sister Lidia Kiskaden was married to Mr. Black ( I know his name but can't think of it right off hand) then she married a Arthur Burch. It appears that your George Mains and Mary Vane are from 2nd generation back from my GGGrandfather James Henry Mains. Lets talk very intresting lots to share.
Vickie

Brown, their son Jacob Franklin married Grace Quintrell.

I have seen Jacob Mains wifes maiden name as Nancy "Small".
I have question about that.
I have Nancy Mains Brown death certificate and her mother's maiden name isn't Small on this certificate.
I've been trying to verify just which one is right. On the d.c. it looks like it is either Nelson or maybe Wilson, definitely not Small. Does anybody by any chance have a death certificate for another member of this family that names the mother's maiden name?

Thanks, Linda G.
MAINES/MAINUS, Verdell, Daisy, Alvin

I have found my great-grandmother, Daisy Ellen Brock Neel married to a Verdell Mainus (born GA) on the 1920 census. I am not sure of the spelling of his name, and his age may be 20 or 70. There is a son, Alvin, who may have been 4 or 9. The others, Lycurgus, Whidby, and Ibra (the census index read them wrong) are my grandfather and his siblings. Daisy was in Orlando in 1930 as Daisy Maines. I would like to contact anyone with information on this Maines/Mainus family. My grandfather and his siblings actually had the last name Neel (also found as Neal and Neil) but were under Mainus/Maines.
