Hi Leo, I first heard your father's name when I was about 12 from my father. Your father had a sister named Theresa. She married Donald Marsett and had 4 sons and 1 daughter. My father is one of those sons. So for the last year I have been trying to search for relatives also on the mainville side. Have you heard of the Mainville family reunion on June 27th 2009 in Cohoes,NY? Please reply back I belive I have found Joesph mainville's parents but unsure, any information would be great. Thanks from another relative my name is Summer Marsett

My dad is affectionately known as "Uncle Dickie". I live here in Riverview, FL. My dad lives in Lakeland, FL. He is a retired Army Major.
Pierre Miville was born in Fribourg, Switzerland and travelled to Quebec in 1639 with his family. Most Deschenes/Mainville/Miville in North America can trace their roots back to Jacques Miville sieur Des Chenes, b. 1640. Check out the Deschenes board here for greater info and also www.miville.com for Pierre and his offspring. I suggest posting some info for as far back as you have and maybe someone else will recognize the names, dates and places. From there you may be able to tie into the Deschenes tree. Good hunting.

MAINVILLE/MONVILLE

I am seeking info on two families: MONVILLE and TACHET. The name MONVILLE has also been spelled deMONTREVILLE and various other ways MONTEVILLE, MONTVILLE, etc.). The TACHET is an attempt to spell a French-Canadian name that was *pronounced* "tah-SHAY."

Adelia TACHET was born abt. 1827 in "Kittyville," NY, according to family lore. I haven't been able to locate "Kittyville," but someone has suggested that perhaps it was actually "Keeseville," NY. What county is Keeseville in? Does anyone have a website to access records there such as births, marriages, deaths? [The pronounciation "Kittyville" is from the memory of Adelia's young son Edward, who spoke French-Canadian rather than English as his primary language.]
Adelia TACHET married Frederick MONVILLE/deMONTREVILLE, had two children: Edward (b. 1849) and Lavinia, and then by 1858 she had passed away. Frederick (nickname "Frenchie") then married a woman from NY who was a schoolteacher [unsure of maiden name, may have been STACEY]. The family then moved west about the time of the goldrush, stopping for awhile in IL and then moving onto Hannibal, Marion Co., MO, where they decided to stay. Fred and later son Ed both worked for the railroads, Fred as an engineer and Ed as coalman. Both men lived to be in their late 90s and beyond. Ed's daughter lived to 99 1/2 as well and was my grandmother.

This family has been especially difficult to trace. ANY help will be appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Diane Wiswall at jtwiswall@earthlink.net

Mainvilles/Mayvilles in Michigan

I am so stuck! My grandfather was John Louis Mainville of Alpena Michigan. His Father was William A. Mainville who was married to Odile St. Onge. In my grandfather's baby book there is a christmas card from his great uncle A.N. Mayville who was married to Mary E. Mayville. But his Grandfather's name was John A. Mainville who married Mary Beriault. How can brothers have 2 different last names when their father was Abraham Mainville who was married to ? People in my family think the mystery wife was native american. Anyway I'm having the hardest time finding any link further back than Abraham Mainville. Thanks for any tips or clues!

Michelle

Hello Eileen,
Mainville is only a side-line for me, and there are certainly lots of people out there who know a whole heck of a lot about it than me, but my understanding is that mainville and Miville are the same line going back to Pierre Miville dit Le Suisse who married Maugis and came to Quebec in the 1670's, I believe. He was originally from the canton of Frieburg, or something like that, in Switzerland, but I seem to remember reading that he went first to France, lived there for a year or two, and then came to Quebec through laRocehlle. Later on, in Canada, the family took the additional dit name of "Of The oaks" and part of the family kept that and dropped the Miville/mainville--as, apparently, has happened in your own line. I think the dit was royally awarded in terms of an estate that part of the family moved onto, awarded for some special service. Mainville is generally considered to be just a spelling variation, and I'm not familiar with the history of how it split off. Good luck with your search, and if you come across any Mainville connections to Alpena, Michigan, drop me a line.
Bill

Hello Suzanne,
I thought that the "Hartnett" name sounded familiar--I'm in Alpena, MI, right now visiting relatives and do not have access to all of my genealogy records, but I believe your name is on the tree that Bob and Rhoda sent me of their direct line.

As to how the Mainvilles "fit together", that remains an open question! We've identified three or four Mainville "lines" all based in Alpena, but are having trouble linking them --even though they must be connected in some way. The coincidence of three or four unconnected Mainvilles all choosing to settle in Alpena at the same time is too much to bear. But we just have not yet found the magic key.

My grandmother was a Mainville from Alpena.

When I get home next Monday evening, I'll send you all the curent information I have. Last I heard, Bob and Rhoda were going to ask your mother about all of this--they seemed to think that she had some records.

Do you have any sense of who your great-grandparents were?

Bill
