from ANCESTRY OF JOHN S. GUSTIN by Susan McComb. The history of Dorchester says that he came from London in 1635. The author says that he was listed as one of five men from Bristol, England to claim a parcel of land deeded to them. This was in 1637. They then petitioned Massechusetts to be included in the State and it was granted. Also in 1637, the town of Boston granted him a house and garden site. He must have been of importance as he was granted the title of Mr. In 1638, the church became weary of his religious view unless he reforms. In 1654, Mr Thomas Makepeace was in the Narraganset Expedition against the Indians for which he was paid from the treasure of Massachusetts Bay. He took much interest in free schools . In 1641, he with other owners, conveyed the whole of rents and profits of Thompson's Island to the town of Dorchester for the support of a free school. His will, dated Boston June 30, 1666 is on record in the probate office in Boston. It is long and can bee found in the MAKEPEACE GENEALOGY,Pg 15.

There is a legend that a cetrain Scottish King desired to mary a princess in England at the time that the two countries were at war. This was done and the family of the princess was hencforth known as the Makepeace family. From English court records in the rign of Queen Elizabeth 1577-1578.
In the history of OLD DORECHESTER THOMAS MAKEPEACE IS AMONG THOSE WHO CAME FROM LONDON IN1635. He was one of the five proprietors of Dover, New Hampshire and Swampscottpatients and was from Bristol or Shrewsbury, England. One of the other proprietors was Robert Saltenstall. the patients embraced the seaside where Portsmouth now is and coming around the said land by the river until the Falls of Quamacot which now includes Dover, New Hampshire. Mr. Makepeace was one of the five proprietors petitioned by the general court to have patiets and the jurisdiction of the people dwelling within the limits of these patients amd come under the government of Mass. which was granted. from Mas. Records 1641, June 2 several parties are named appointed to view and settle Mr, Makepeace farm of 200 acres. At this time, 1641, Mr. Makeseace lived in Dorchester where he owned land this same year he married Mrs. Elizabeth Mellows of Boston for his second wife. From the records of the First Curch, Boston is found the following. " the 25 th day of the fifth month of 1641 Mrs Elizabeth Makepeace lately called Mr. Elizabeth Mellows but now wife of Mr. Makepeace, Dorchester, was granted recommendation thether, That is to the church in Dorchester. from the book called the TRANSCRIPT OF BOSTON RECORD Vol 1 pg 45 1637 " the 25 th day of 7 th Mo. September 1637. At a meeting this day it is granted ath Mr. thomas Makeseace shall have a house and garden place. this house and garden place were in Hanover St, near Court Street and probably was not far frow where the Concert Hall was in1857. It was not far from what was called the MARKET STAND in the colonial days of Boston In this Market Stand stood the first meeting house of Boston being a tiny place with a thatched roof, It served as a church till 1640. QA little north of this place lived Captain Robert Keayne who founded ( in this country ) the Ancient and Honorable Company of Artillary of which Mr. Makepeace was a member.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Extract from the History of Dorchester " a church was gathered this year ( 1638 ) at Waymouth under the sanction of the proper authorities and Mr Lenthial, wh appeared to be in advance of his time in liberality cause by the elders to suppose that he imbided some of the errors of Mrs. Hutchinson. They determined to check the error in the bud and Mr. Lenthial therefore was called before the general court to retract his opinions and some of his friends were punished. For two of our MRs, a title of no small significance in those days wre brought before the court and Mr. Ambrose Martin for calling the church covenment as stinking carrion abd a human invention and saying that he
wondered at God,s patience and said that the ministers did detrone Christ and set up themselves, was fined 10 pounds and counselled to go to Mr. Mather and be councelled by him. Likewise Mr. Thomas Makepease, because of his novel disposition, was informed " We are weary of him unless he reformed" It is not known the disposition of Thomas Makepeace.

In Virginia and Pennesylvania their descendants are found among the well known families of Hamilton, Snowden and Thompson of Philadelphia; Chew, Hunter and Greene of Virginia.
Elizabeth (Browne) Gustin was a grandaughter of Thomas Makepeace and a descendant of Lawrence Washingron, ancestor of General George Washington.

Some data from S. Kelly. Will date: 3 Jul 1719
On July 3, 1719 at Falmouth (now Portland), Maine, the immigrant, John Gustin, (Augustine Jean) in the name of God, Amen, on his death-bed, signed his will as follows: "John AUGustin".
The Jeans were Huguenot refugees and after the Edict of Nantes of 1598 and restated in 1685. Capt. Augustine Jean came to America at Reading, MA. in the spring of 1675 and served in King Phillips War 1675/6 as a sergeant in Captain Turner's company. (VIDE, SOLDIERS IN KING PHILLIP'S WAR - p 491, by Rev George M Bodge indexed Gustin {Augustin}) At the close of the war (1680) he received from President Danforth, a grant of land at Falmouth, ME. with the privilege of conducting a brick yard. John and Elizabeth settled in Falmouth and brought his in- laws with him This was the fourth lot on what was Broad street, now India street. He bought a small lot of Widow Housing on the west side of the Presumpscot river. He bought land above the falls on the Presumpscot in 1686 of Thomas Cloice and made his home there until May 16, 1690 when the Indians destroyed Falmouth. He bought more land in ME *2. On 26 May 1690 the French and Indians sacked and burned Falmouth. John and family were among the few who escaped. They fled to Lynn, MA. They returned to Falmouth in 1719. Falmouth is now Portland, ME. He was said to be a mariner part of the time and was once captain of a vessel. (Maine was a part of Massachusetts until 1820 when it became an separate State. Falmouth, now Portland ME, is about 200 miles up the coast from Watertown and less by sea, so the latter was probably the means of travel.)
Notice that this is the third of our progenitors to serve in the military in the very early part of our country. The following is a copy of his will on file at Augusta, Maine.

S=CAPT Bruce Gustin III,
Gustin3@SPB.SWFPAC.NAVY.MILI don't believe that Augustine Jean/John Gustin and Elizabeth Brown were married in Marlborough. Marlborough was destroyed in two attacks by the Indians in 1676 and the inhabitants fled for their lives. Years elapsed before the settlers returned to Marlborough. Torrey says they were married in Essex Co., MA 10 Jan 1676/7, but I have not seen the primary evidence yet. At the time, ministers were not permitted to perform marriages in Massachusetts. Perhaps they were married by a Magistrate of Essex County.

I've puzzled over this for I couldn't find a probable Abigail in my Gustin database. Just figured it out. William Gustin married Abigail Thayer on 24 December, 1714 in Boston, Suffolk, MA. He must have died before 1 June, 1721.
So now you know that she was Abigail Thayer Gustin. How can I be sure
of this?
Because the original immigrant, Augustine Jean, who changed his name to John Gustin after coming here from the Isle of Jersey, is the forebear of *all* early Gustin/Gustine families in the country, and the only other Abigail is his daughter and William's sister, who married Thomas Fuller.
Besides, one of the Gustin books gives a 1 June, 1721 marriage for Abigail Thayer to James Langfear.

S=CAPT Bruce Gustin III;
Gustin3@SPB.SWFPAC.NAVY.MIL As for the others, namely William and Mary, there is absolutely no evidence that I have ever seen that would lead me to believe that they are the children of Augustine Jean & Elizabeth Brown - - other than their surname. That they were named Gustin is a coincidence. I note that in 1688, there was a Will/William Gustin listed as a member of the "militia on Kennebeck River (Maine) under Capt. John Rowden" in Baxter's "Documentary History of the State of Maine" Vol. VI p.362. Perhaps William, Mary, and even Elizabeth were his children. In addition, there was another Gustin family living in Boston in the late 1600's and the wife's name was Mary:
"Mary Gustin, Widow, of Boston" indicted 5 Oct 1697 for selling drink without license (Mass. Arch. 40:472). She could have been the mother of William, Mary, and Elizabeth, all three of whom are mentioned in Boston records. There is no birth record in Lynn for a William Gustin, so I think
the 1688 date and place were simply estimates to "help" this individual "fit" into the family. If Mary Gustin was born in New London in 1689, she certainly wasn't the child of Elizabeth (Brown) Gustin, as Elizabeth was raising a family in Falmouth at the time.

Well, guys, the possible Bushnell connection is bugging me like crazy. I have been reading and re-reading what notes we have from Minerva Bushnell trying to figure how she arrived at her belief that John Gustin, Jr was married to Mary Bushnell and John Gustin's sister, Mary was married to Mary Bushnell's brother, John Bushnell.
Minerva states that John Gustin, an adult, baptized July 7, 1713, owning the covenent in public at the Congregational church of Stonington, Conn. and that John married in 1713, Mary Bushnell. If that is so, did we miss the marriage record by not checking Augustin or Bushnell. Perhaps Mary was on a different church and that's how we missed the marriage. When we were in Springfield Conn. we only checked the Gustin name in the many indexes. Has anyone checked for Bushnell there?

Has anyone seen or heard of a Bushnell Genealogy other than that written by Minerva Bushnell in the mid 1950's? There was a letter written from 733 Flower Ave., Venice, Calif., 28 Jan 1951 from G E Bushnell "Bushnell Family Historian" who refers to a "Judge Bushnell" and a "Bushnell Genealogy by George Eleazer Bushnell of Nashville, published in 1948, and completed by him just before his death in 1945."

John(5), b.Nov,1691 at Lynn, Mass. (town records). The Congregational church of-Stonnington, Conn. contains the following: "John Gustin, an adult, baptized July 7,1713, owning the covenant in publick." He married , in 1713, Mary (last name not known). She was born in 1692. In deeds conveying lands at Glastonbury, Conn. show him to have been possessed of large-land holdings, and he was at that time dealing generously with his elder sons. There are 50 deeds recorded at Glestonbury, alone, executed by John Gustin and his elder sons. Glastonbury land records speaks of John Gustin coming from Hebron, Conn. and his deeds of land to John Jr., Alpheus, Eliphalet and Amos and disposed of most of their property, as deeds show, about 1753 and 1754. Prior to 1763, John and wife Mary, accompanied by some of their children (of whom Jeremiah was the youngest) moved Florida, Orange Co., NY where they had located after disposing of their land at Glastonbury, Conn. and settled in the central part of Sussex Co. New Jersey where she died Dec. 31, 1762 aged 70 years. He died Oct.16, 1777 aged 86 years. Their remains were interred on their own estate between Augusta and Banchville, .Sussex Co., N.J. Their tombs, the inscription on which, still (1897) can be decyphered, are located on lands now owned by Frank Roe; once part of the Gustin estate. He was Colonel in the Indian war and private minute man in the Revolutionary War. Also Home Guard..

Just a quick note to clear up something. In our message concerning the Gustin - Stephenson Connection", [which by the way, is the first and only place we've seen a possible different surname than Bushnell for Mary's maiden name], I may have inadvertantly misled you. Tom Hoot questioned whether the source of the info was in John's son, Jeremiah's will. I didn't remember seeing anything like that, so I reread what I sent and compared it with the page in the book, and I see how it could be interpreted as Tom did. However, that is not the case. On the family group sheet of Jeremiah Gustin I, it has the usual info, but since there was no place for info about the will, the compiler used the line "Other Wives" and drew a straight line through those two words and wrote "Will proven 5-16-1825". Next was listed date of death with "will" writen above it and 8-31-1823 written afterwards. Then came cemetery, then father's name, then mother's maiden name.
However, after looking in the book to find what Tom was referring to, I did find a note that might be helpful.

Subject: Re: John Gustin Jr & Mary ?
John Gustin and Mary Bushnell are right. And that John's sister Mary married John Bushnell. Check out the film from Salt lake City for the Bushnell family. I've seen the entries. And on the Ancestral file CD's It has the connections made there too.
I've checked the New Jersey sources that are also here in the Iowa State historical Building. The John Gustin and Mary Bushnell are indeed the one and the same that are buried in Branchville, NJ. (rural Frankford Twp., near Augusta). I'm told the stone still exist but are hard to read.
I hope they are not that hard to read as the one for his son Jeremiah Gustin and Bethany Fuller.

Some Gustin researchers have suggested that John Gustin2 married Mary (or Mary Jane) Bushnell4, d/o John Bushnell3 and Sarah Lovering. Proof, however, remains elusive. Some interesting connections are as follows:
1. John Gustin2's (1691) sister, Mary Gustin2, [children of John Gustin1 and Elizabeth Browne] married John Bushnell4, sister of Jane Bushnell4 [children of John Bushnell3 and Sarah Lovering].
2. Mehitable (Buswell) Bushnell, wife of William Bushnell4, son of John Bushnell3 and Sarah Lovering, and her son William5 witnessed the will of John Skinner3, g/s of John Skinner1 and Mary Loomis2.
3. John Skinner1 and Mary Loomis2 were the parents of Mary Skinner, first wife of John Colt1, who m2. Hester Edwards.
4. Mary Loomis2 was the d/o Joseph Loomis1 and Mary White, grandparents of Abraham Colt2, s/o John Colt1.
5. Abraham Colt4 (1714) was the g/s of Abraham Colt2 (1666), who married Elizabeth Gustin3 (1714), d/o John Gustin2 (1691) in #1. above.
Additionally:
1. William Bushnell, son of John Bushnell and Sarah Lovering, moved to Hartford, CT in 1725, where he was living as late as 1738. 7 of of his 11 children were born in Hartford.
2. The Colt/Coalt/Coult/Covalt families lived in Hartford by 1656, and for at least three generations family members lived nearby in Podunk, Windsor and Glastonbury, CT.
3. Mary Gustin2 and her husband, John Bushnell4, lived in Boston until after his death abt. 1699. Mary (Gustin)2 Bushnell m2. Joseph Miner and moved to New London, CT where she died 20 Oct 1752.
4. Clearly John Gustin2 would have known Jane Bushnell4 when John's sister, Mary Gustin2 married Jane's brother, John Bushnell4, in Boston on 27 Jun 1710.
5. The John Gustin2 & Mary (?) family arrived in Glastonbury, CT by about 1735. [Pehaps the family moved to Glastonbury, CT, in part, to be near some of her family, if John Gustin2's wife was Jane Bushnell4.]
Perhaps John Gustin2 was married in Boston, before he ever moved to CT...
Any comments or thoughts are appreciated.

How can I be sure
of this?
Because the original immigrant, Augustine Jean, who changed his name
to John Gustin after coming here from the Isle of Jersey, is the forebear of *all* early Gustin/Gustine families in the country, and the only other Abigail is his daughter and William's sister, who married Thomas Fuller. Besides, one of the Gustin books gives a 1 June, 1721 marriage for Abigail Thayer to James Langfear.
