Yes I did know about Ella getting re-married 02 Dec 1925 to Winfield W. Staples, and a lot of info at http://www.swansisland.org/ that the people of Swan's island have put together with cemetery photos, including Ella P. Maker and David Van Horn, with Mary E. Van Horn (Clark's) marker set between both their headstones.

A great web site that might fill in blanks for your family tree also.

I haven't been back to the island since my grandfather died when I was very young, but really would love to go and meet everyone. Great memories of the past.

Hi Tim,

I left a detailed response on your personal messages, so look to the top of the page by your log in name and click "messages" to read.

Briefly, we are cousins and related because we are both related to Mary E. Van Horn and her sister Jennie Belle Van, and of course their mother and father David William Van Horn and Ella P. Maker. Ella P. Maker is my 2nd Great Grandmother.

Your direct line continues down from David and Ella, through Mary. My direct line through her sister Jennie Bell Van Horn.

Hi Tim,
What I have so far, and seem to be going in this direction which hopefully is correct:
David William Van Horn born abt. 1847 Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada and died June 5 1924 at Swan's Island Maine. and married Ella P. Maker born Bet. 25–29 Mar 1864 in Cutler Maine, died 27 Sep 1940 also at Swan's Island Maine. Can't find correct connection do Davids family.
They had the following children:
Jennie Belle, William H., Mary Elizabeth,Marion, Lucy E., Laura B.
Mary E. Van Horn was first married to a Mr. Alley and had Robert E. Alley Born 1913 in Maine, and was taken in and raised by her second husband George S. Clark.

Mary and George had the following children:
Milton S., Marion F., and you say your dad was the third child Orrin J. Clark that I hadn't found yet. Any other children?

If my Family Tree Maker is correct you and I are 2nd cousins twice removed! And Mary Elizabeth my Great Grand Aunt.

In trying to track down Ella P. Maker who shows up in different households with different year US census ( a servant?) but in the 1870 Cutler Washington Maine Census I have the following family:
Aaron and Elizabeth Maker the father and mother with;
George A., James L, Hannah, Lydia, and "Permelia E." which I am hoping since it's the only census I found with Permelia...that maybe in fact she is "The" "Ella P. Maker" and prefers her middle name in all other documents.

Ella and David Van Horn end up and die in Swan's Island Maine where much history and details can be found "after" them, Including their gravestones. My family follows directly from Jennie Belle Van Horn, who married Freeman L. Staples and continues from Staples to Joyce.

Also One side fact I'm really having a hard time with is the connecton with American Indian, which I'm guessing comes from this side of my tree, but can't verify.

Any info you have would also be helpful.

Nice meeting another cousin.

I have seen only talk about the Native Maker story. There apparently was some verbal history, maybe backed up by some old records. I am also part Native, but some of it comes from maine. I saw an old map in a Cape library that shows James Maker (earliest settler) living adjacent to Indian land. I am guessing that this is because he married Rachel, who was Native. A Nickerson genealogy says that James Maker was Native. It's more likely that he was English. I've also seen reference to a story of three Maker brothers being shipwrecked on the Elizabeth Islands. There appears to be more that one Maker family in the Cape and RI area later on.

Also, I have seen genealogy showing that John Maker's wife Mary Hopkins, descendent of Stephen Hopkins Mayflower was also a descendent of the father of Massasoit. But that's not your line.

MAKER in Lifton, Devon, England

Greetings,

I am researching the surname MAKER from LIfton, Stowford, Devon. I have come to a confusing fork in the road. I believe I know which way to go, but the other route seems to be published over and over and over again in numerous Ancestry.com trees. I know it is possible for a mistake to go viral; many just copy and paste data that seems to fit. I confess I did that too when I started researching family history over 15 years ago. Now I document with as many citations as I can, or at least note clearly when I am guessing.

My question is about the first born child (Elizabeth) in this family:

JOHN MAKER (b. 26 Jun 1782 in Lifton, Devon, England, d. 04 Dec 1859 in Lifton, Devon, England) AND
MARY PENGELLY (b. 18 Oct 1782 in Lifton, Devon, England, d. 20 Jun 1858 in Lifton, Devon, England)
married on 08 Apr 1804 in Lifton, Devon, England.

Children of John Maker and Mary Pengelly are:

Elizabeth Maker, b. 26 Aug 1804, Lifton, Stowford Parish, Devon, England.
Hannah Maker, b. 1807, Lifton, Devon, England
Jane Maker, b. 1809, Lifton, Devon, England
Mary Maker, b. 1812, Lifton, Devon, England.
John Maker, b. Abt. 1815, Lifton, Devon, England
William Maker, b. Abt. 1821, Lifton, Devon, England.
Grace Maker, b. 1823, Lifton, Devon, England.
Thomas Maker, b. Abt. 1826, Lifton, Devon, England.
James Maker, b. 1828, Lifton, Devon, England.
Johanna Maker, b. Abt. 1830, Lifton, Devon, England.

I know these facts about my g-g-grandmother is Elizabeth (nee Maker) Goodman: She born between 1803 and 1804 in Lifton, Stowford, Devon and died 14 Jun 1882 in Gunnislake, Calstock, Cornwall. She married Samuel GOODMAN (b. abt. 1793 in Broadwoodwidger, Stowford Parish, Devon, England) on 09 Sep 1821 in Lifton, Stowford Parish, Devon, England. He died 19 Mar 1866 in Gunnislake, Calstock, Cornwall. I am certain of these dates and places and names.

I am not 100% certain that my g-g-grandmother's parents are John MAKER and Mary PENGELLY, however, I strongly believe this is the right family. Not only do the dates and places match up, I cannot locate any other matches even in the same generation in Lifton. Additionally, a very strong indicator for me has been the naming tradition in subsequent generations, and the first two children born by my g-g-grandparents are named John and Mary respectively.

However, a very healthy handful of self-published family trees on Ancestry.com have this Elizabeth Maker married to a John Gloyne. None of these references are documented by any records, and all seem to repeat the same info that seems to be cut and paste research from the 'One World Tree' project. As online records grow larger and lareger, I really worry about errors going 'viral'. I know I posted some inquiries as long ago as 1997 that included erroneous assumptions, and my mistakes are still showing up in other people's online published trees!

Here is my question: Is there someone who can confirm records for one fork in the road, or the other?

Thank you!

Amy M. Goodman
Ann Arbor, Michigan

Researching BROAD, MAKER in Lifton, Stowford, Devon
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Found your post.  David Van Horn and Ella P. Maker are my great, great, grandparents.  I too would like info on ancestry  past Ella and David.  Ella seems to show up in 2 1880 US Census, one has her at 15 yrs. old a servant of Samuel B. Day and the other seems to be at her home.
Children of David Van Horn and Ella P. Maker are: Jennie Belle Van Horn, Mary E. Van Horn, William H. Van Horn, Lucy E. Van Horn, and Laura B. Van Horn.
I also followed to your path with daughter Mary E. Van Horn who married George S. Clark w, children are Milton, Marion, and a step-son of Robe (Robert) E. Alley.
Any extra info would be appreciated.  By the way, this connection leads to Swan's Island Maine.
I think I am a descendant of Maria, and Daniel Angus MacLean.  I too would like to know the information.  I went to the Cutler town office and was told that any records before the 1960's (I think that was the date) anyway the ones I was looking for were lost to fire. I hope you are having better luck.  My great grandmother was Estella McLean.  Good luck, Jalene
Hi Barbara. They have not been connected.  There are one or two generations between John Maker of Cape Cod and Jonathan Maker of the Cape who moved to South Thomaston ME.  It is an educated guess, since John had a son named Jonathan.  Cape Cod is lacking records.
The Makers showed up in Cape Cod, MA in the 1600's, probably from England.  Many ended up in Maine, some in southern New England.  It is unknown if the early Maker families on the Cape and in Rehoboth MA originated from the same family.
I have never been able to find the parentage of John Maker.  I too am directly to Charles Maker and his wife Nancy Wright, who I cannot find her parents either.  I have been told that her parents are from Smithfield RI but have no proof of that, doyou have this information, I sure hope you do.  I have been looking for John's parents for years.  I have even been to Maine to look for it, and Nova Scotia.  But he does come from the Cape Area because he left land to Charles and another son.  The land he left was on the Cape.It is a mystery to me.
Good luck     Cousin Barbara
Susannah Goff and John Maker are in my family tree.  They are the furthest back I can find with any valid information to my Maker/Macker line.  Do you have any information on John Maker and who his parents might have been?  He just appears in Rehoboth and I have never been able to find out where he came from.  I would imagine that he ties into the MAKER family from the Cape Cod area, but again, never found any proof.  Were you ever able to find any additional information?
William also had a daughter, Joanna who married James Gladding.  Their son, James Gladding Jr. married Anna Maker, Dec 1787 in Rehoboth.  Sorry, that is all I know about the Makers.
