The town of Maldon sits on the only hill in the immediate area. It is not a very big hill but compared with its flat surroundings it is significant. There is a Norman C of E church that sits near the crest of the hill, on a wall is a plaque in memory of Jonas Malden, surgeon, and Mayor of Maldon in the mid 1600's. 'Dune' was Norman for hill so I assume that 'Mal' might be cross.

This may well be the same guy as he died in 1896. He may well have been connected with the Oxbridge universities as he was headmaster of Windlesham, but this is the first that I have heard that he was a keen chess player. It doesn't surprise me as my father was a good chess player & I have inherited 2 of his chess sets. Thanks for the info!
Rob Malden

Dear Mr Malden,

I came across your posting about your family whilst doing a Google search for 'Charles Scott Malden'. I was interested in the name because I am doing some research on the Oxford-Cambridge annual chess match, and someone of this name played in the 1878, 1879 and 1880 matches between the universities. The only other thing I know about this chess player was that he was at Trinity College, Oxford and that he was on the losing side three times running! If it is your g-grandfather, it may be of some interest to you.

Regards

John Saunders
Editor, British Chess Magazine
www.bcmchess.co.uk

One of my great-great-great grandfathers was a Robert Malden (labourer), who married an Ann Johnson at Bramford, near Ipswich, Suffolk in 1799. They had 11 children.

Re. origins of the Malden name. Migrants from Maldon, Essex, or Maulden in Bedfordshire. There is also a New Malden in Surrey. There is some interchangeability in the spellings as I have encountered both being used for the same individual. The Malden line in this part of Suffolk goes back to the 1580's, but I can't positively link Robert into it.
I read somewhere that Maldon comes from the Saxon words Mael and Din, and means hill with a cross on. Which bit means "hill" and which means "cross" I don't know! Any hill near Maldon in Essex would have to be a small one as it's quite flat there.

I hope this is of interest,
Regards, Richard Miller-Williams

My great-great-great grandfather was Robert Malden, who married Ann Johnson in 1799 at Bramford, near Ipswich. They had 11 children, including my g-g-grandfather, Thomas, b.1816. He was a soldier, and married Mary Devine (Irish catholic). His son was another Thomas Malden, b.1862, who Married Isabella Scasbrook in London in 1884. His daughter, Beatrice Jessie Malden, was my grandmother. I have names of brothers and sisters for these generations if anyone thinks they might be linked.

Regards, Richard
I'm a desprate woman....I have hit a major brick wall.

Do any family researchers have a Shadrack/Shadrick/Shedric or something close in your trees PRIOR to 1835? He would have been born around 1813 in KY or possible Ohio and moved to Indiana about 1835 to marry a Mary Ann Brooks in 1838. (Later to marry Elizabeth Quillen,m Hatfield) In 1838 the spelling was Moulden. It is believed he had a sister Elizabeth Moulden born abt 1802 in Ohio.

I'm grasping I know.... but it's worth a try!

Thank you!!

Debby Moulden Frerichs
Lawrence, KS
debby11@mindspring.com
Hi Catherine

I have 2 books of history. I don't know of any published in the public domain.

One of the books is "Windlesham House School" which was printed in 1937 in London. It tells the story of Windlesham House which was bought by Charles Robert Malden (ex Royal Navy) in 1837 and inevitably covers his family who were involved with the school. Could you let me know more of your ancestors and I will see if there is reference to them?

Why not contact me direct at robmalden@aol.com ?

The other book is in manuscript (handwritten) and when I come across it again I will bring it out. It gives a lot of family history.

Regards
Robert Malden

He may have lived in Labrador, Newfoundland before settling in Saginaw County, Michigan in 1834. He had two daughters, Catherine and Susanne. He also had a brother who settled in Saginaw County before he did. I'd appreciate any information you might have.

James and John Malden in Dillon, MT.

I have an letter that talks about James and John Malden living in Dillon, Mt. James lived on a large cattle ranch. He had owned a shoe store in the east. He heard about the rich placer mines and sold the shoe store and went to Montana to prospect. There is allot of detail about his mining and his ranch. If someone is related, I'd be glad to send them a copy. You can contact me at jbc.bbinc@att.net.
