There are a great many Quantocks and connecting surnames include - Allen, Judd, Walsh, Soble, Laurence, Meaton, Royall, Mead, Wheadon, Thomas, Gale, Marshall, Whitbread, White, Manning, Need, Gummer, Wood. The only Whitbread I have is Emily Frances Jane Whitbread 1861/1937 who married Henry James Quantock. I have no parents or siblings or anything else for the Whitbreads. Anything you can give me would b e appreciated. These people are not in my direct line, but branches of it. I do extend my ancestry to cover anyone at all who connect.

Beryl
Thank you for your reply. It looks like the Quantocks spent some time in Western Australia. Are you related to the Quantocks? My mother told me we had relatives in Western Australia. I live in Sydney and am descended from Valentine Whitbread.
Lorraine

Beryl
I have been looking for information on the Quantock family in Australia. Emily Frances Jane Whitbread married Henry J Quantock (or Quanlock) in 1884 and they had nine children born in Sydney Australia. I can't find any trace as to what happened to them later. Do you have any information?
Lorraine

I have also found where the names a switched around and my great-grandfather was George Wallace Male and was always referred to as Wallace. The native american reference may be coming from Charity Mix (Ambrose's wife) ancestry. Her mother was Unis Gaffield and Unis's father was captured by Indians at a fort in Vermont and raised by them and then a French family. His father was killed in the attack and mother also taken prisoner but released later. You can search for Nathaniel Gaffield and you will find some interesting info plus a long line of ancestors.

The reference for the son Job is from the cemetery information and I'll have to look through my notes to see if I have anything else. The only reference I have to Libby's parents is her mother's name and she lived next door as evidenced by the census records. Also found a reference to her brother and his wife and kids in a separate record.

I am going back to Rochester in a few weeks and they have a wonderful reference library in Ogden/Spencerport where I hope to have time to do some more research and if I find anymore info I will post.

My family line is my grandmother was a Male (father was George Wallace) and she married a Denny (Dennee) from the Kingston, Canada area but both were already living in the Rochester area. This is my mother's side of family.

Most excellent! I indeed found the marriage between Job Male and Elizabeth Scott on the exact date you give. However, I've found at least with this branch of my family they interchanged middle and surnames very often. I've found records on familysearch.org that Elizabeth Scott's full name was actually Adelaide Elizabeth Scott; the record corresponds with dates and names which make me reasonably sure it's the same girl.

I've never seen a record of Job Male's son Job, but if it was from his first wife, I have her as Mary Louisa Scott. All I know is she gave birth to Mary Louise Male on March 28 1866 and died April 22 of the same year. I do have record of Ida Male, and the Madie born in 1878 may have been the Hellen MM Male I found in the 1881 Canadian census in the Male household. Claire was actually Vina Clair, and she married my ancestor Charles Glenney after his first wife's death (her sister, Mary Louise) in 1903. Don't have a date on that marriage.

As Ambrose Male came from England, that goes to say his granddaughter Vina Clair wasn't fully blood Native American, but it's possible that her mother Adelaide Elizabeth was? I don't suppose you have any more pedigree information on Libby, do you?

Job Male was born 1846 in Colbourne, Ontario, Canada. His parents were Ambrose Male and Charity Mix. Ambrose was born 1810-1811 in Kingsbury, Somerset, England (many Male families from this area including several Ambrose and Job) and he died 7/4/1883 and the death records filed in Northumberland, Colbourne indicate he was 72 years old a farmer and born in England and cause was heart disease and age, physician was W.A. Willoughby and relative was Charles W. Male, Blacksmith Colbourne (this is my ancestor), and registered 8/2/1883 and religion was Canada Methodist. Ambrose immigrated to Canada before 1820 and his father’s name was also Ambrose. The family immigrated sometime before 1820 as there is a land record for Ambrose Male; also in the family was at least another son (brother to Ambrose) John born 1819 and he married and his wife died in 1893 and the obituary is listed as Mrs. John Male pioneer family of Colborne. Charity Mix born about 1812 and died 3/29/1894. Her father was John Mix born 1774 and married in 1799 to Unis Gaffield who was born 1784 in Saratoga, NY. The Mix family were royalists and went to Canada after Revolutionary War. Unis’s family was located in Vermont and NY and there is a story about her father (Nathaniel Gaffield) being captured by Indian’s and then brought up by French family. He is also listed as one of the founders of the Colbourne area. Charity was the youngest of six kids, 4 boys 2 girls. Ambrose and Charity also had six kids – Rachel born 1832, Maria born 1840, Ambrose and John born 1841, Job born 1846, and Charles H. born 1850.

Job Male born 1846 married his second wife (his first wife was the sister of his second and I believe she died in childbirth) Elizabeth “Libby” Scott born 1852 and died 1931. They married at the First Methodist Church of Rochester on 6/10/1867 and it was one of the few marriage records that survived a fire. I believe that Job had an Uncle that immigrated to the Rochester, NY area and the family went back and forth between Colbourne and Rochester (there was a ferry). Charles Male also visited his Uncle there and immigrated to the Rochester area when he was in his 20’s (this is my family). Libby Scott’s mother was Louisa and her brother was Walter. Job and Libby had the following kids – Job born 1865 (must be first wife), Ida born 1873, Madie born 1878, Claire born 1880, and Hazel born 1883. Job died in 1932 and Job, Libby and their son Job are buried in Salem Cemetery, Northumberland, Canada.

Ambrose Male, son of Ambrose and Charity was a widower and on 8/27/1878 he married Harriett Hawley (age 21) of Colborne, daughter of Charles Hawley and Harriett Mix and witnessed by Mary Hunter and W.H. Brown. Ambrose was listed as a farmer.
I have info on Job Male and the Male family. Job's brother was my 3gr-grandfather. Part of the Male family (mine) moved to the Rochester area about 1885. Job was actually married in Rochester area but lived in Canada (ferry ran across the lake). I have info on Job and marriages and where he is buried, etc. It will take me a few days to get time to dig out info but will post it soon.

I'll keep your information in mind and let you know if I come across anything. Meanwhile, all I really have is the marriage:

"Finly (Finlay) Wellington Batty, to Elizabeth MALE. 16 Jan. 1851, Haldimand. Rev: WAIT. Wit: Benjamin Jackson, Almira Jackson, his wife and several others."

Note that in the 1881 Census the family is listed as German, which the Battys definitely were not. I'm not sure where that mistake originated, unless the Males were German.

And since the Males and Battys were one after the other on that census, they were immediate neighbours. I have assumed that Elizabeth (nee Male) Batty and Job were sister and brother because of the ages, but that's a guess.

Good luck with your research.

I'm also interested in Lakeport/Colborne area generally, so if you come across any general info about life there in the early days, 1790s to 1900, I'd be interested. Thanks!

Unfortunately, the Male part of the tree is worst when it comes to details.

From what we knew, gg grandpa Charles Glenny married Mary Louise Male, who died in 1903 after giving birth to a Nellie L Glenny (1888-1891), and then married her sister, Clair, from whom we descend. According to the grave markers, she lived from 1880-1972 and is buried here with Charles. Weirdly, the Winnebago County annals say Mary Louise died with her child in 1888 *shrugs*

My sister-in-law researched names through film and found a record of a Charles W. Glenny (born 1862 in Colborne District, Ontario) marrying a Mary Louise Male (born March 28 1866 in Colborne) on Jan 5 1888 in Colborne. But my gg grandpa's middle name was Albert, and he was born in 1865. Still, the probability of those two names on a marriage record in the same year and the same area is highly unlikely. This same record names Mary the daughter of a Job Male and Mary Louisa (Scott). My sister-in-law found two records for Job Male, both born in Ontario Canada in 1847 or 1844.

Then, as I mention, I just uncovered a census record putting both a Vinna MC and Mary L in the Males house (Males, not Male). According to the entry, they were daughters of Job and Elizabeth Males, sisters to Ida EA and Hellen MM. The birth years match up quite close, and so I'm prone to believe this is my family: Vinna MC (June 2 1880), Mary L (March 28 1866), Ida EA (c 1874), Hellen MM (c 1877). They were living in Ontario at the time, and Job was employed as a blacksmith.

I've been told by my mom and late grandfather that gg Grandma Glenney was full blood Native American, and I'm honing in on this branch in order to find out which tribe she's from. There is a constant mix up of middle names and first names, which, with the double middle initials in the census record for their children, I'm prone to believe that those could stand for Native American names, as in Joe Standing Bear Smith. It's a theory, at least. I don't know for sure yet.

I'm sorry I can't give you anything on the Battys. That name has never come up in my search at all.

I'd have to check my files, but I believe a Job Male was my great-great-grandmother's brother. Her name was Elizabeth Male and she married Finley Wellington Batty. They lived in Lakeport, Ontario. I don't know much about the Males, other than where they lived -- nearby property to my gg-grandmother's family. Do you have any info at all on the Males ... or the Battys? I'll see what I can find here.

You don't have anything on Job Male, do you? My gg grandma was Clair Male. The 1881 Canadian census has a Vinna MC Males as a daughter of Job Males, married to an Elizabeth Males, and as the dates are quite consistent as far as birth, I'm assuming this is her.

Re: Uriah Male from Somerset b. 1810

Uriah Male is my wife's Great Great Grandfather. He was christened in Seavington on 5/6/1808 - Not sure if this is your Uriah, but my one was notoriously vague about how old he was if you go through the censuses. His father was Malachi (b 1777, Barrington) who, with his wife Mary, had the dubious privilege of being run out of Seavington and sent to Drayton under the Poor Laws in 1832. From Malachi it is possible to trace the tree back to Ricardus Johannes Male (1594) who is a further 6 generations back.

Hello Jeff

I've just been browsing, and came across your RootsWeb message of January this year. Charles George (more usually referred to as George), is/was my uncle, and I have just spent a week in Spain with his son Michael who travelled over from Canada to join me.
He wasn't just a British footballer, but a Captain of England and Arsenal. Three consecutive gold League Winners medals were displayed at the Highbury Museum, and were sold at auction a few months ago after the closure of Highbury after the new Emirates Stadium was built.

How can I help with regards to George, and what is your connection to the family?

Kind Regards - Dave
Hello Michele

I wonder if you are on the right track here - as yet, I have been unable to match my Males to any of those from Jersey or Somerset, and there are four of us related in the Male line who have matched trees as far back as to 1690 so far.

However, you did start by mentioning the footballing history, and that aspect is most certainly linked to my George (my father's brother).

If you would like to email me direct to davemale@btinternet.com, I will give you the url and password to my large tree on Tribal Pages - you can see if there are links there - I have my doubts but would love to find that there is a link with the Someset batch of Males, as there are so many of them.

As far as I know George's only appearance in Africa, was during the war when he served in North Africa with the RAF. Do you know in which year he visited, and I can ask his son Michael whether he can confirm or otherwise that this was the case?

Kind Regards - Dave

Hello Linda

Thanks for your enquiry, and apologies for the delay in response - I've been abroad for the past 3 weeks. Regrettably, there doesn't appear to be a link of my Males with Jersey at all, my lot coming from the Midlands, Cheshire, and London for as far back as 1690.

My Charles George Male was born 1910 in West Ham and captained Arsenal and England in the 1930s, so if you do find a link with any of the areas I mentioned there is a bit of fame to add to your tree!

Kind Regards - Dave
