Stephen T. Malec - Death (probably in California) period 1986-1996

Further to previous posts on the search for information on my father Stephen (Stefan) T. Malec born Cook County, Chicago, Illinois born 6 Aug 1921. I have successfully traced his family now and am in contact with them. I have additionally now met them in Chicago unfortunately although I now know the details for all his 9 siblings the family lost track of my father after he moved to California.last contact with him appeox 1976. It is believed that he died sometime in the period 1986-1996. He had a pal in California with the nickname "Baseball John" no other details known. Anyone out there with any info or ideas of how to find the ultimate fate of my father? I have tried several agencies and spent considerable sums with thm trying to get this information all to no avail.

Further to my posts below: I have now found that my Grandmother's maiden name was Matusick and she was born in a place called BREZOVICA in Slovakia around 1884. She died
on 11 February 1950 and was buried in the Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, Chicago. Matthew (my grandfather) died 10 years later on 28 Feb 1960 and is buried in the same cemetery. However, I am still searching for information on my father STEPHEN MALEC born 6 Aug 1921.
I know he was still alive in 1990, however I have now been able to determine anything else since, anyone any ideas or infomation please?
We have a Gene Malec from Cook county and his family is from Poland. He has a brother Edmond, sisters Rita, Joanne,Arlene. His memory is rich from the 30's. He ran numbers and was at (not a witness) murders of top mafie leaders. His humor is fabulous. His wife was top accountant for Mercer Records and a top cruise line. Fabulous. Contact us for additional Malec information.

I'm Jared Malec. My father's name is Yarraslav Adam Malec and his father's name was Michael Malec. Both my dads parents were from Ukraine... then taken to Germany and then migrated to Australia. I think they met either in Germany of Australia.

I can't remember my grandmother's last name before she was married. I also know that 5 or 6 of her siblings died when they were in Ukraine.

They migrated to Australia in about 1950... maybe 1949, but my dad was born in 1951. I also know that Michael Malec had a brother... I'll have to ask my dad about him.

Hi Pedro,
Thanks for the interest, it may be a long shot for your father to know the family of my particular interest and there appeared to be loads of Malec(s) in Chicago at the same time as them.

I do know that Stephen had many siblings but none of the boys had the name of Robert (your father's name). He had brothers called, Matthew (Jnr), Martin, Andrew, John, Joseph and Peter. He also had at least 3 sisters called Mary, Anne and Sophie.

Regards
Steve

Hi MJ,
Thanks yet again for the tips and I will follow them all up.
Tomorrow I am off to London with my wife for a couple of days where we are attending the "Who Do You Think You Are"
Exibition at the Olympia venue there. This is the main geneological exibition in the UK and all the big companies including "Ancestry" have stands at the show. We are looking forward to it very much and hope to pick up a few hints and tips there too! My wife has all her mothers ancestry in Ireland and that to presents its problems as their main source of records was destroyed by fire in 1923.
With my mothers side having a strong Irish connection and my fathers being USA,East European etc, as a tyro, I need all the help I can get.
Regards
Steve

Steve,

My father served in WW2. I've been able to obtain a copy of his discharge papers (he was honorably discharged in 1945) and a list of medals he earned from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. Recently, Official Military Personnel Files have been made available for personnel who served during WW2 or earlier. Next of kin are able to get a copy of all info in the file. Other requesters are only able to obtain the info that falls under the Freedom of Information Act. That might be an avenue to pursue.

http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html

Also, if Steven Malec was issued a military headstone for his grave (or is buried in a miliary cemetery), there will be records for the issue of the grave marker (burial). And speaking of burials, funeral directors records are not closed. I've gotten quite a few copies of their records for my ancestors. They're certainly worth pursuing. And the LDS have microfilmed some cemetery and funeral home records - some into the late 1980s.

To find a place of birth for Matthew, you might have better luck looking into the baptismal records for his children and the church marriage record for Matthew and Anna. I've had great luck with maiden names of mothers and places of birth for the parents of the baptized child. And don't forget about naturalization records. Even if the applicant never finished the process, there will be paperwork to be found if he at least filed papers to begin the process. And if he wasn't a citizen by 1940, all resident aliens were required to register according to the Alien Registration Act of 1940. The info on this registration is valuable.

Don't know if this site will help, but have you found the PolandGenWeb site? http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~polwgw/

Regards,
MJ
I am researching my wife's family tree. Her grandfather was George Charles Malec, born in Shelton, CT in 1915. He died in Arlington, TX in 1993. He married Charlotte Ruth Calverly. George, we think, was born Adalburtis (sp) Malec, but changed his name to George. George's parents were born in Poland. Please let me know if you have any additional information. My e-mail is tdies2000@yahoo.com.

Thanks

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the offer of help in the UK, but my ancestry is Polish and German. Believe me, I'd love to be dealing with records in English instead of Polish, Latin, German, and Russian! :-)

In terms of US census records, the info was recorded however the census taker heard it spoken - which is why there can be such disparity in spellings from one census year to the next. And the info was likely given by the wife or children in the household. The head of the household was most likely at work when the census taker came. In some cases, if the family didn't answer the door after the second/third visit by the census taker, the info could have been provided by a neighbor or landlord. Also, if the person providing the info had a heavy foreign accent, that would have further complicated the way the census taker heard the answers to his/her questions.

It's not too far a stretch between Malec and Malez. In Polish, Malec is pronounced MAH-lets. Come to think of it, Malec and Malecz aren't that far apart in pronunciation, since Malecz would be pronounced MAHL-lech in Polish.

Since you're dealing with Chicago, have you found the Polish Genealogical Society of America's site? http://www.pgsa.org They have a few free databases that might be of help to you.

Regards,
MJ
Not certificates, since those don't contain all of the info recorded in the church books. Photocopies or transcripts of the entries in the book are what you'd want if you don't already have them. One or more of these may have the place of birth for Matthew.

-MJ

Hi MJ,
Manythanks again for the furhter info. It would appear that from certainly 1930 onwards the family that I am trying to trace did use the name MALEC. Stephen Thomas Malec served in the US Army in WW2 and I have a record of his service number and his final rank of Staff Sergeant, he was discharged on 12 May 1945. Unfortunately the National Personnel Records Centre, St Louis Missouri is unable to supply any further information as a fire occurred in 1973 which destroyed 80% of the military records of veterans discharged between 1912 - 1960. I am aware that another of Matthew's sons (Stephen's brother) Martin born about 1909 married a lady called Makryna Sklar and they had two children called Martin M. Malec and Itaanne Malec. Quite by chance I came upon an death notice for Itaanne in the Chicago Tribune dated July 2007. It would from that notice that Martin M. Malec her brother is still alive. However I presume that Funeral Directors in the USA are like those in the UK and subject to data protection and therefore would be unwilling to help me with contacts?
Regards
Steve

Also very interested in his wife Anna (original surname unknown, also born in Slovakland? or possibly what is now the Czech Republic, born about 1882 and emigrated to US in 1903.
Hi MJ,

Many thanks for that information. Yes Matey Malecz appears to bethe same person as the Matthew Malec (and his family) I am trying to obtainin information about. According to the 1920 US Census the family are living at 4739 South Hoyne Ave, Chicago as per the WW1 Draft Registration, however he is registered then as "Mathew Malez". By the 1930 Census the family have moved to 4811 South Hoyne Avenue, Chicago and he is registered as Matthew Malec!!
In both census statements listed above he gives his trade as Carpenter. Interestingly in the 1930 census he states that he is not a Veteran of US Military Service?

Thank also for the tip reference "Church Records". As I am UK (England) based I am not sure about how to approach the problem(s) of obtaining that sort of information. I will have to give that one some deep thought!!

Many thanks again for taking the time to provide the information and the trouble to actually contact me. Should I be able to help you with any UK information you may need do not hesitate to contact me.

Best Regards. Steve
