Margaret Mallet

I am looking for more information on Margaret Mallet (1832-1900). I believe she was born in Pennsylvania but I cannot verify her birthplace. I am trying to find out where the Mallet family name originates from and if possible find out her parents names. She was married twice. Her first marriage was to a Mr. John Haney with whom she had six children. Their names were: Catherine (b.1848), Fred (b.1854), Katherine (b.1854), William (b.1856), Mary (b.1858), and James (b.1860). All of their children were born in or around Jasper, Indiana. Her 2nd husband was Charles Wesley Rosa (b.1829). They had 8 children: Zelphia(b.Unknown), Callie (b.1862), Ada (b.1864), Hiram (b.1866), Clara (b.1868), Samuel (b.1870), Zilphia (b.1873), and John (b.1876). All of their children were born in Indiana.I may have Margaret's parents names but i am unsure if they are correct. The names are William Lawson Mallett (1784-1859) and Mary Miller (1793-1846). Their are many variations of the last name Mallet. I have seen Malet, Mallett, and Mallat so i am unsure of the correct spelling. Margaret's first name has a variation also (Margarette). If you have any information on anyone listed please let me know. Any information is greatly appreciated!
MALLET, PAUL (? -1753) & PIERRE ANTON

MALLET, PAUL (? -1753). Paul Mallet, a French Canadian voyageur and explorer, was probably born in Montreal, Canada, the son of Pierre and Madeline Mallet. He accompanied his elder brother, Pierre Antoine Mallet, to Santa Fe in 1739 and participated in Fabry's failed attempt to ascend the Canadian River in 1741-42 (see MALLET EXPEDITIONS). In 1744 he married Marie Jeanne Barié and settled at Arkansas Post. They had three children. Mallet died there in 1753.

MALET EXPEDITIONS

MALLET EXPEDITIONS. The Mallet brothers, Pierre and Paul, qqv eighteenth-century French voyageurs from the "Mizuri" country, explored a vast part of what became the Louisiana Purchase. In 1739 they made a trip across the plains from the Missouri River to Santa Fe. In 1740 they encountered and descended the Canadian River, crossing the Panhandleqv of Texas. They continued down the Arkansas and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. The Sieur de Bienville, governor of Louisiana, commissioned André Fabry de la Bruyère to accompany the Mallets on a return trip and map the route. The party ascended the Arkansas and entered the Canadian in 1741. Because of the river's dry bed, little progress could be made. Fabry returned to Arkansas Post and to Le Poste des Cadodaquious for horses. By the time he returned to the Canadian, the Mallets had pushed on.

Fabry returned to New Orleans via Le Poste des Cadodaquious in 1742. The Mallets made little progress and were forced to return down the Canadian and Arkansas rivers. They continued exploring out of Arkansas Post. In 1750 Pierre and three hired companions ascended the Red River, obtained horses and supplies at Le Poste des Cadodaquious, then traveled overland to the Canadian River and proceeded to Santa Fe, again across the Texas Panhandle. Pierre was arrested and sent to Mexico City and eventually to Havana. Except for Fabry's assignment, the French paid little attention to the Mallets' geographical discoveries. From them the Spanish, through depositions, gained accurate descriptions of the Arkansas River and its tributaries, but the knowledge was protected and forgotten. Fabry apparently failed to leave any evidence of what the Mallets had reported. Zebulon M. Pike, who consulted with the French, shows the course of the Canadian River as too short and southerly. Because neither French nor Spanish cartographers benefited from the Mallets' discoveries the Río Colorado of New Mexico (the Canadian River) was considered the source of the Red River until around 1820.

MALLET, PIERRE ANTOINE (1700-?). Pierre Antoine Mallet (Maillet, Mailhet, Malet), French Canadian voyageur and explorer, brother of Paul Mallet,qv was born on June 20, 1700, in Montreal, Canada, the son of Pierre and Madeline Mallet. His family soon moved to Detroit, where Paul was baptized in 1711. While still a young man Pierre moved to New Orleans and became a voyageur in the "Mizuri" country. He married Louisa Deupet, who died by 1751. Mallet is noted for four explorations: from the plains to Santa Fe (1739), from Santa Fe to New Orleans via the Canadian (some sources say Pecos) River (1740), from New Orleans in an abortive attempt to reach Santa Fe with André Fabry de La Bruyère via the Canadian River (1741-42), and from New Orleans to Santa Fe via the Red and Canadian rivers (1750). Mallet was arrested and taken to Havana by the Spanish in 1750. See also MALLET EXPEDITIONS.

Many of the Mallets of TN, AR and LA had a mixed racial background. They do not seem to be consistently classified as Free Colored, Black, Mulatto or White. There seemed to be more emphasis on race in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Censuses than in the ones before or after that period. After 1870, none of my TN Mallet's were classified as Free Colored or Mulatto even though they had been classified as such in 1820, 1850, 1860 and 1870.

Mallet's of Charlestown and Maine

Hi Maggie, Have you come across the family of Isaac Mallett (think it goes, Isaac, Andrew) I believe one of these Isaac's had sons James G. and Thomas L. Mallet, who were born in Charlestown, Ma. and went as young men to Warren, Maine--There they were blacksmiths, and built the Mallet Tavern. I know they connect to the Storer and Folger genealogies, through James' wife, Sarah Storer. I am searching for as much information on Mallet's of Charlestown and Warren, Maine. Any help appreciated. Sincerely, Sandy Clapp-Moffett

Hi Maggie- I am sorry I don't think I can help you much. I have not researched the Mallet line past James and Thomas who were born in Charlestown, Ma. and went to Warren, Maine.(Where the Mallet Tavern is located). I am looking for confirmation of that. information. I checked my files, and I believe I found Isaac at the same adress as James and John, and also checked the census and found out his father was also Isaac, --I do not have any proof as of yet. Just been checking census information and vitals of Charlestown and Maine. I will definetly keep your message and an eye out for Elizabeth and John. I would like to figure this out! My James and Thomas went to Maine late 1700's, and Mary Hannah, dau. of James was born 1833. Elizabeth could a cousin. Wish I could be of more help, but really just trying to put together this line. Have you checked Charlestown records? I had found Andrew on one of the census. I just checked the Annals of Warren, Maine and there is no mention of a John. Please keep in touch, maybe we can figure this out. Sandy

I do know that Carolus is the Latin for an old French masculine name of Carold. The godfather of one of my g-uncles was Carold Boivin but on my uncle's baptismal cert. it is written in Latin as Carolus. I've encountered this on other French-Canadian baptismal certs also.
Hello, my 5th great grandmother was Elizabeth Mallet. Her Christening date is listed as March 31, 1751 and was born in Charlestown, MA. She married Jonathon Ireland, Feb 8, 1769 in Salem, MA. She died, November 4, 1834 in Salem, MA. She had a number of children, whose names included, James, Thomas and Isaac Mallet. Here father is listed as Isaac Mallet, her mother as Anne. Elizbeth also had a daughter named Anna Gardner Ireland. Pehaps her mothers maiden name is Gardner. In addition, there is an Isaac Mallet who was christened on 9/3/1727, in Charlestown, his father is listed as Andrew. Does anyone have any additional information on this family?

I have just come across some interesting information on the 1920 USA census.
Head of household: Mallet, Willis(?)
Wife: Blanche
2 sons
Father-in-law: Charles H or R Hobbs.(age 69) b. in Canada
They were living in Lakeville Township, Penobscot Co. Maine.

As I am looking into the Hobbs line from New Brunswick and I do have a Charles Hobbs in my ancestry(brother to my gr-grandfather), I am wondering if this is the right one. The age is very close(within a year) and my Charles' wife's name was Blanche White. No big stretch that they would have had a daughter named Blanche. Would this be the same families?
If you have any info on this Mallet, please let me know.

Hi Joan,
I had a notification from RootsWeb that you had replied to my posting on Mallet.
When I tried to access it I found it was deleted. My original message was also deleted.
If we cannot communicate on this board please e-mail me direct with your response.

Thank you.
Clarence Cadeau
ccadeau@yahoo.com
