Hi!
Thanks for your response. At this point, I don't see a connection to your spelling of the surname. I did make contact with a g-g-grand son and found out the family pronounced "Maloughney" like,"mu-lak-ne". I'll save you E-mail response just in case.

Have a great Labor Day!!!

Joe

My Malowney maiden name is a variation of Maloney. Seems that my Irish ancestor, William Malowney, immigrated to Canada in 1860, married Mary Catherine Jones, b. Scotland, in Canada, then immigrated to USA via Oak Grove, Wisconsin before 1870, resided in Thayer County, Nebraska, and probably died in Dakota Territory after 1885. His sons settled in Thayer County, Nebraska, etc.

It seems the time to be on this message board was @ 2000 but if anyone is still out there, I have a Maloney Limerick-Chicago connection that I'm trying to explore.

My grandfather Patrick Riordan listed William Maloney as the relative (cousin) he was going to stay with on the passenger manifest of the ship he came over from Ireland on. I found William in the 1900 census at 647 S Sawyer Ave in Chicago. He had emigrated in 1885, at the age of 19 (born Oct 1866). He had married Alice Kennedy at Holy Family Church in Chicago in October, 1893, and the two of them shared their home with her sister Kate Kennedy. The couple had a son also named William later in life (1913 I think) as shown on the 1920 Census. William Sr. must have died sometime in the 20's because he doesn't show on the 1930 census with the rest of his family.

I don't know what side of my family he is a cousin of. If the father's side, there will be a Maloney male to Riordan female marriage in Ireland sometime around the 1840s-1850s, or if on the female side it would be a Maloney male to Gubbins female.
Does anyone have William R Maloney in their extended family tree, or Riordan or Gubbins marriages? Does anyone have information on William Jr. in Chicago?

I am looking for any and all information on the children of George F. Maloney (1904-1999) and his wife, Anna E. (Crean) Maloney (1911-2002).
Re: Margaret, Mary and Willliam Maloney, New Jersey

Hi,

Glad to hear from you. We may be related to the same ancestors. I have information that I would be glad to share.

Right now I can tell you that my great grandmother's name was Margaret Fogarty. She married Thomas Flynn in 1872, Jersey City, NJ. They were both from Ireland, but I do not know where in Ireland.

I have family documents with the name Maloney on it (William, Margaret/Mary). I think the Fogarty family married into a Maloney family. From one of the census, I found a Maloney/Fogarty family in Hoboken. I wrote to Our Lady of Grace Church, Hoboken, NJ for the Fogarty/Maloney children baptism certificates. I am not certain that they are my relatives, but I am willing to share this information you. They lived in Hoboken, NJ. If you give me your email address, I would send you the information and any other information you think might help.

Lorraine

Re: Maloney Creative Talents

Hi Mary, Here's a long response to your intriguing question:

I can see your post is some years old but I'll respond anyway. I've noticed this too. My three sons are all talented painters. I paint. My father did. His father did, his father did. His father did. His father was a professional portrait artist.. I'm back to about 1840 now. If I begin to think of all the cousins who paint or play music, as well, then the net spreads very wide indeed.

Back in the early 1800s there seem to have been a number of Moloneys/Molonys/Maloneys painting professionally (commissioned works) in Ireland, England, France, Spain and the USA. Were they brothers? cousins, or was it simply that participation in the arts was highly valued by the wider family already then??

I'd like to know more about the colony of M*lon*ys living in New Orleans in the 19th century. William Maloney settled there and set up a number of photographic studios after 1855. He claimed he had studied photographic techniques in France, in the earliest days of the new technology. Are any of the American M*lon*y artists since then, descended from William (1816-1875)? Or do they all come from many separated branches?

This William, born in Ireland and settled in Louisiana in 1855, may have been the portrait artist patriarch of our Moloney branch in Sydney. One among several coincidences is that my gg grandfather (who claimed his father William was a professional portrait artist) established both of his sons in photographic businesses in Sydney in the 1890s. If William in New Orleans was from a different branch then the artistic nature flowered also at the opposite end of the world in much the same way as it did in the USA.

Incidentally, there is some evidence that the Australian Coat of Arms, adopted in the early 1900s, was adapted with very little change from a design proposed by John Moloney in 1883.

Using google to scan, there seem to be a great many of the larger family practicing in the arts (visual/music/dramatic etc) all around the world.

Going further, I've noticed too that education seems to be important in the family. Some years ago when going through the State Archives here in New South Wales, I was amazed to discover that of the 80 or so M*lon*y men, women & children who arrived in Sydney between 1855 and 1880, at least 20 became teachers (25% is an astonishing ratio - especially since teaching was a controlled profession; meaning that teachers had to be registered with the State. Registration required strong academic qualifications). Among the M*lon*y teachers in this period was one Mary Moloney who already had a Bachelor of Arts degree by 1880. She must have been among the first women anywhere to be qualified at university.

Today there are a great many Moloney academics around the world - chiefly (it seems) in the sciences. Astonishingly, this inclination goes back along way. In the last half of the 1800s, Alfred Moloney is credited with writing the first scientific paper on climate change from his observations of deforestation in Africa. Right through the 1500s (and possibly beyond)Professor O'Molonys held the chair of Philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris.

As well, from a very early interest in photography, a strong professional interest in chemistry seems to have developed. Moloney grandson, Norman (b 1896) became a keen amateur photographer. From his darkroom at home he developed such a strong interest in chemistry he rose from being a draftsman in a power company to an industrial chemist of world importance. His sons, grandsons and ggrandsons have all produced emminent chemists.

From photography to chemistry, keen interest has perhaps lead many M*lon*ys into medicine because a search of academic papers brings up an astonishing number of M*lon*y medical practitioners around the world. An important one among these was Patrick Moloney, who was one of the first two medical doctors to graduate from Melbourne University in the 1890s.

This is just a short summary of some of the things I've noticed. Gerry Moloney in Ireland has done a lot of work on this and he's made some amazing lists. (www.moloneyclan.com)

The address is 1534 7th avenue watervliet, ny. There is another address to Newark, NJ but I think she was just visiting there. I think Janet's birth day may have been 7/16 because someone named Margaret something wrote about her celebrating her "natal" day. There is a post card that is from "your big brother Al". Or atleast thats what it looks like. Another letter asks of her "brothers" so I'm assuming she had more than one. She also recieved cards from a Charles J. Maloney so I think he may have been another brother.

The address was 1534 Seventh Avenue Watervliet, New york. These letters were to a Miss Janet Maloney so I know she wasn't married at the time. One of the letters says "say hello to little Charlie for me" but I think that was her brother and not her son I can't be sure. There are letters from a Robert Gerald Mathias who seems to think very fondly of her and she got a few valentines from some man named Billy but I don't know if either of those married her.

I was recently cleaning out my grandmothers things and realized I have a great number of letters, post cards and a few pictures to a Janet Maloney from Gerald Mathias, Eva Saunders, Charles Maloney, and various other persons from the late 1920's early 1930's. I was unsure if anyone would want these. Please let me know.
Hello Lorraine,

My email address is lmarimc71@msn.com. I do have some info. on Maloney and Fogerty's that have married but I do not know how these Maloney's are related to mine. I know that the Maloney and Fogerty families went to the same church as my Maloney's, so I assume they are related. I went to the local LDS church and ordered the microfilm to view the films for Our Lady of Grace and St. Joseph's in Hoboken and do have some photostatic copies of some records and I wrote down some of the info on notebook paper. Unfortunately, the documents were in Latin and some of the writing is difficult to read, so I copied down the info as best as I could. I may be able to help you with some of this info you are looking for. In the documents I found a few Maloney's that listed their place of origin as County Clare. So I have also assumed that this is where my Maloney's came from. If you email me at the above address I would be happy to share with you what I know and to find out what you know.

Thank You!
Lea Maloney-Cook

Hey,
My Maloney relatives are from Hoboken, NJ. I have some documents with baptismal sponsors as Fogerty from Our Lady of Grace and St. Jospeh's Parish. My Maloney's also related to O'Connor/Connor/Connors. Original spelling of name was Moloney. I am trying to find out what part of Ireland my Maloney's originated from. If you have any info on the Maloney's it would be appreciated. Am willing to share what I know!

Thanks
Lea Maloney-Cook
